As a christian, do you feel an obligation to take care of your body? What are you doing about it?

Last year I vowed to get back into shape. I was lifting weights and running 3 miles almost everyday. I lost 28 pounds in about 3 months, then I tore a ligament in my knee. I couldn't do any cardio at all for months and had to wear a brace. It still is not fully healed. I can only do about 20 minutes of light jogging before the pain starts coming back. I tried the eliiptical, stairstepper and stationary bike too and none of them are any better for me. I have gained back all of the weight and have lost much of my motivation to get in shape, but I still workout although my workouts now are very light compared to what I was doing last year. It sucks I tell ya!

I think physical fitness is important wether you're a Christian or not. It may seem silly to y'all, but I started excercising because of a guy. I wanted to be thinner and prettier when he came back from working out of town for the summer. I'll let y'all know how it works out. lol

Good for you all! :)

You're right, CCG, non-christians should take care of themselves too. :) I was just thinking along the lines of our bodies being gifts from God, so it should be even more important to us, huh?

I wish I could be anorexic for a few months, or have a hyperactive thyroid. Trying to diet doesn't seem to work with me.

I think being healthy is important. I have a theory about eating "right" and exrcising though that may not mtch up with what most people think.

I don't think that working out at a gym is necessary or should be expected of most people. It can be expensive and many cannot afford it or it may not be in a good location near them. The problem is that now a days, most of us have lifestyles that are not physically demanding and so we tend to "have to" work out in a gym in order to stay "fit".

I do think we should do as much as we can in order to be healthy but I also know that our views on what a healthy person looks like aren't always correct. I view health as what and how much I eat, physical activity, mental and spiritual well being as well.

I know alot of unhealthy thin people too. I bet y'all know them as well. The ones that eat whatever they wnat and don't gain a thing. Never excersize and smoke and drink as well

I was born fat. Was a chubby kid and still am overweight. I have a fairly active lifestyle and don't eat junk food very regulaly. (although recently with home renovations and lack of kitchen use, I havn't had much choice the past week)

Some people don't seem to understand that just because you are "overweight" it does not mean you are not active. I play with the dogs, do my own yard work as well as all my own home renovations and when it comes down to it I am still overweight. I have tried everythng in the book to lose weight and never seem to lose more than a few pounds, including personal trainers and working out in a gym a couple hours a day 5 days a week. At one point I started gaining weight from the muscle mass I put on.

I have also realized thru trial and error, that "eating right" is not a one size fits all program. What one person can lose weight on another cannot.

I guess I really just don't like the attitude that if you are fat/overweight/chubby that you are lazy and eat too much. Because though I am considered to be overweight, I am none of those things. I have even competed in some physical challenges. I loved the way people looked at me as I climbed 34 flights of stairs a couple of years ago. Yes, I am here, I will not be last and I certainly won't pass out like the guy on flight 17. Watch your step.

I do the opposite, Gabe. I don't eat as regularly as I should and often eat the wrong things when I do, and I seriously deprive my body of the sleep that's so necessary to repair it. I'm working on it though because it's just as important as all of the dance classes/workouts I do, right?

I'd love to be outside running with my dogs right now, but we're under a heat advisory/ozone alert and I have asthma. :( Guess I'll have to wait til this evening.

Im handicap. Very limited in what I can do. This year I went from 300 to 265 pounds by doing water physical therapy three days a week, and eating healthier/less.
Alot of people seem to eat healthier but stil eat alot. That does not help you.
Also cutting out fastood and soda for a month savd me a bunch of money and 10 more pounds.

I've been trying to avoid fast food too. Doing great with that. Also trying to cut back on Dr Pepper/sweet tea, but I don't know if I can give it up entirely :)

I wouldn't give it up entirely because then you and your body will crave it more and the next time you have it, you'll drink more than you usually do. Matbe work yourself to where you only have it at lunch on Tuesdays or something.

Try Diet Dr. Pepper. I drink it and it tastes pretty good.

oh, but isn't it great to be able to eat everything and not gain any weight?

I know it comes with feelings of nervousness, sleeplessness and anxiety too, but I don't think I'd mind that if it meant I could eat my favorite foods and still lose weight.

Gabe, Diet Dr Pepper isn't bad on ice, but diet drinks tend to taste like the can to me for some reason. :) I'm thinking if I only have a couple of Dr Peppers/sweet teas per week, I'll probably live :)

If you're going to skimp on sleep, stay away from high glycemic sugary or refined flour foods like white bread, regular soda, white rice and potatoes. When you combine those with lack of sleep you get a recipe for Metabolic Syndrome. Its very bad. Your body basically starts accumulating abdominal fat (the worse kind there is) and that leads to type 2 diabetes and also high triglyceride counts (fat in the blood). Substitute high fiber carbs like whole wheat breads, cereals, leafy greens, fresh fruits, etc.. and lean sources of protein (fish, beans, lean cuts of beef, etc..). Sorry if you already knew all that.

That... explains a lot of my weight problems actually. I've never been great at sleeping and I eat tons of potatoes, breads etc... it's cheap and filling... (and I'm poor and hungry). I'm burning near 1300 calories a day. I ride my bike everywhere I go (about 8 miles daily) and then I have a fitness class at my college that for an hour where I lift weights and do a ton of cardio. I'm in the best shape of my life but my gut and chest need "defined". Takes time I guess...
