I don't think anyone should know how someone else loves themselves, or how often. Its really something that should be private.

1 John 3:16 This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers and sisters. 17 If anyone has material possessions and sees a brother or sister in need but has no pity on them, how can the love of God be in that person? 18 Dear children, let us not love with words or speech but with actions and in truth.

Ephesians 5:25 Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her 26 to make her holy, cleansing her by the washing with water through the word, 27 and to present her to himself as a radiant church, without stain or wrinkle or any other blemish, but holy and blameless. 28 In this same way, husbands ought to love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself. 29 After all, no one ever hated their own body, but they feed and care for their body, just as Christ does the church— 30 for we are members of his body. 31 “For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh.” 32 This is a profound mystery—but I am talking about Christ and the church. 33 However, each one of you also must love his wife as he loves himself, and the wife must respect her husband.

Also, in English we only have the one word love to use for so many different kinds of love. This link may be illuminating for people interested in knowing a bit about different kinds of love and the different words used in Greek in the New Testament.
5 Greek words for “Love” Chris Legg, LPC

Hope it helps :D

Post Script. I love you!

If "immanentizing the eschaton" is within those limits, you are doing just fine.

On another day, pondering utopian societies would be within the realm of possible topics, as one was attempted not far from where I presently live. I think they were pretty much total nutjobs, but I admire their spunk.

I probably AM guilty. Just because I know a thing to be impossible doesn’t keep me from wanting it. I’m not going to grow 3 more inches, but I still think it would be awesome. J

The things bogging me down are these:

A. Finding Buckley in a Love and Understanding thread :D; and
B. The fact that I’m hiding in here right now to keep from causing my boss serious bodily harm.

*inhale* *exhale* *inhale* *exhale*

P.S. – When I first skimmed your post yesterday, I thought you said the “e” word that triggers all online sifting systems for the alphabet soups. Ya skeerededed me. :D
People typically strive for the impossible. That is something you and a whole lot of other people (myself included) rely upon. Sometimes it is for the better. I think of Dostoevsky's "Dream of a Ridiculous Man." The key is realizing how ridiculous it all is when you factor in the imperfection wrought by the Fall.

It is a common dichotomy within us all: the ivory tower dreamer and the pragmatist who can't see farther than his own nose. The key is reconciling both sides in a way that one maintains a clear view of one's surroundings and dreams of improvement.

This is an extremely difficult task if one wishes to ponder about it but has no theology to rely upon.

fyi, Buckley is suitable for all occasions. That includes thread derailment.

Therein lies the rub, my friend. I have difficulty reconciling the two and have been constantly reminded all of my life than I cannot save the world. I know that I can't, but, thankfully, I do know Who can. Even so, I'm driven to protect, defend, encourage, ...tilt..tilt...tilt...

And thank God for people like you who are driven to do so (provided they do not go into branches of government like the EPA).

My personal inclination is to make the world and people function on the next level (protection being reserved for ones I know well). Optimize life. This too is chasing after the wind.
