Heyyy Everyone, ok so I have a chance to have a gf, great news! However I am worried about what is a sin and what isnt, is sharing a bed (without doing anythnig) a sin, or is only "doing it" a sin?
Thank Jonno |

Funny. we see these kinds of posts regularly. Not about 'sharing a bed' but rather about 'how close can i get to sinning and still be safe?'. Which is what you're doing. How about this.. if you have to wonder, why risk it? Why live as close to sin as possible, but rather stay as far away as possible? What's more important to you, your girlfriend or God? Making her happy by doing things that could be questionable, or could lead to actual sin in one breath, or following God fully?
Use some common sense here. God gave it to you for a reason. How many seconds does it take from laying in a bed together to taking that step that undoubtedly crosses the line to sin. Is it wrong? Not likely the act of laying in the bed together, but the heart desire behind it i'm not convinced is not sin. Really your interest here is in your desires above anything.

In all honesty, asking, "Can I sleep in the same bed with a someone of the opposite gender and not sin?" is really the same as, "Can I sleep next to a bonfire and not get burned?" We all know the answer.
Now, I'm not saying there aren't people who have shared beds and not sinned. But I would guess that it's extremely rare... and maybe only if you're in the middle of the room with a lot of other people.

How would that appear to non believers?
Will it strengthen or hurt your testimony? Will it cause you to appear as a hypocrite to non believers? Will other Christians have serious doubts about you? Have you consulted your'e Pastor or Church Elders about this? We are to abstain from the appearance of evil, 1 Thessalonians Chapter 5 verse 22. King James Version. |

However, it would be extremely stupid to do so, because although you are adament you will not have sex with her, when push comes to shove...it is 99.9% certain that you will...and that will be a sin! There is also the question (as already stated) about appearances to those around you. Do yourself a favour and put it right out of your mind and save yourself (and your girlfriend) a LOT of grief!

I think Nalu's points are right on. I think Thessalonians 5:22 is a great verse to remember when you have any kind of question regarding the "grey area" of sin. Also, "There is nothing concealed that will not be disclosed, or hidden that will not be made known. What you have whispered ... will be proclaimed from the rooftops." Luke 12:2-3. I think think these two verses could work hand in hand when it comes to those grey areas. SO here's how I would approach your question
Question: Is it a sin to share a bed with someone I'm not married to? Thessalonians "check" : Am I avoiding the appearance of evil? Luke "check" : If I decided to do this, and Luke says it will be proclaimed from the rooftops, would there be ramifications (personal or spiritual). Anyway, I hope I didn't ramble on. Thanks for posting this question. It is something most everyone thinks about. Blessings, Brian |

Just to put a slightly different spin on all of this... There are times when it would make sense to share a bed. Those situations are incredibly rare.
Making a habit of sleeping together is a definite no-no (as per previous posts). That said, particularly in unplanned situations, it probably isn't worth going too far out of your way to physically separate yourself. If you're both appropriately covered up, the proximity isn't much different from sitting closely on the couch together. Heck, if you're both tired, probably less problematic. If you are planning the rendezvous, if you're making a habit of it, if you're doing it enough that a casual observer or acquaintance would notice, then you're moving much too close to the fire. |

Ask yourself this.. would you sleep in the same bed with a gay man who liked you?
There's your answer.

I'm so glad you decided against this, jonnoboy.
As Ugly said, it is not a sin, but it's not wise. Our walk with Christ should never be about what we can get by with or how close we can dance to the fire without being burned.

Well, I'm late to the discussion... but basically no, it's not a sin. And no, it's not a good idea. LOL.
There are lots of things that aren't sins but set you up to sin. Why deliberately put yourself in a position to be tempted? What was the joke I once heard? "Lead me not into temptation... I do a good job finding it myself."

There is , OK, the Lord leads, but there is rarely to never a time God wants us to chance the repercussions and pain that sin brings. God can keep us from anything, but He also says 'do not test the Lord my God' when Satan asks Jesus to jump off the top of the tall building at the time Satan is tempting Jesus in the wilderness , right before Jesus gets baptized and starts His ministry on Earth. So just don't EVEN entertain that thought IF you are attracted to a girl, she should not even sleep at your place or you hers. Why? Temptation is too great, and, even those with God in their MIDST , who were near-witnesses of creation, speaking here of Adam and Eve, can be talked into this sin that WILL make your walk with God more struggle than it was ever before. So, if you value your relationship with God, don't share the same house with someone you like, let alone share the same bed or even sleep by yourself on the girl or guy you like's couch.

Cancelled tickets? Why not just sleep on a chair, sofa or on the floor with a sheet layed down and let her have the bed? In some cultures, they sleep on the floor all the time.
