Ladies have long had the Proverbs 31 woman as an example of what is to be expected of us as wives/mothers and, even though there are scriptures throughout the Bible regarding what is expected of men as husbands/fathers, it's pretty cool to see it set out in The Resolution from the Courageous movie. In case some of you haven't seen it or heard about it, here it is:

The Resolution: "I do solemnly resolve before God to take full responsibility for myself, my wife, and my children. I WILL love them, protect them, serve them, and teach them the Word of God as the spiritual leader of my home. I WILL be faithful to my wife, to love and honor her, and be willing to lay down my life for her as Jesus Christ did for me. I WILL bless my children and teach them to love God with all of their hearts, all of their minds, and all of their strength. I WILL train them to honor authority and live responsibly. I WILL confront evil, pursue justice, and love mercy. I WILL pray for others and treat them with kindness, respect, and compassion. I WILL work diligently to provide for the needs of my family. I WILL forgive those who have wronged me and reconcile with those I have wronged. I WILL learn from my mistakes, repent of my sins, and walk with integrity as a man answerable to God. I WILL seek to honor God, be faithful to His church, obey His Word, and do His will. I WILL courageously work with the strength God provides to fulfill this resolution for the rest of my life and for His glory. As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord. ---Joshua 24:15"

I love this resolution, it's extremely powerful! That movie has really made a huge impact on people in my community, even on non-believers. My sister works with a woman who doesn't know that much, if anything about the Lord and the same goes for her boyfriend. I guess he watched this movie one night and she came home to him crying. It's really touched their hearts and we are praying that the Lord will keep working through it. What a great movie! The Lord can work through everything!

I watched Courageous not to long ago myself. It was a very touching and inspiring movie. I did catch one minor mistake early on that no one else seemed to realize however, after watching the entire movie, it was obvious that all involved meant well and that the movie would inspire a lot of good in people thus I overlooked it. :)

However, my only concern is this - I have been involved with churches in the past where 'the family' was clearly an idol, where every dime spent and every activity planned was for specifically meant for 'the families' within the church, without the slightest concern for the lost, poor, sick or needy families in the surrounding community. Self serving congregations like these thrive on luring more families into their churches thus more time and more money is being spent on bigger venues / buildings and more extravagant events which serve to lure more families into their one time church which has now evolved into a social club / activity center thus drawing more attention unto themselves and away from those in dire need.

I do hope that you all can see and sense my concern. By no means would I ever want to minimize the importance of family. However, I do feel that our children would appreciate and respect both their parents and the church more if the church planned activities where the entire family could serve with one another, helping others less fortunate than ourselves thus teaching our children not only the importance of serving others but also obtaining for themselves that sense of purpose and fulfillment that comes with seeing lives transformed by and for God's glory.

That's a cool resolution :) I like the movies that church puts out, they always make me cry.......haven't seen "Courageous" yet, though (maybe Liz and Julianna and I should go together, and sit in the back of the theater with a box of tissues, bawling our eyes out, hehehe :D).

I know what Crossfire means about too many churches emphasizing "family" above all else, and I definitely see that emphasis taken too far, on occasion. But, I also know that a man who doesn't have his family life under control isn't really in a position to effectively minister to other people :)

If Christian men would live their lives in accordance with that statement, our churches and families would be revolutionized. People would begin to flood into churches trying to figure out what was so different about us.

Jullianna and others have spoken so highly of Courageous that I went to go buy the DVD the other day, and Walmart was sold out. :(

Yep :)

Studies indicate that a child is 90% more likely to continue in the faith if taken to church and taught by their FATHERS, rather than their mothers alone. That's quite an impact a family can have on the world and the future of the church.

For me, it's all part of the same thing. Strong families/strong faith/strong churches/strong evangelism/strong Kingdom in the RIGHT ways...not about building buildings and NUMBERS....but actually sharing the faith and people being saved and added to the Kingdom DAILY, as they were in the church described in Acts. :)

You act like this is such a hard thing to find? Well, I guess for non-Christian men, it would be, but for any real Christian, this is normal, everyday stuff. It isn't something you even have to think about.

I feel like if I say anything, this will turn into a male vs female war, but real Christian men DO do this. Times have changed women. You should know this. Women are the ones doing the cheating, lying, and being promiscuous these days. Women are the ones leaving their children and families behind now. It isn't men anymore. The only difference is, men are afraid, and sometimes absolutely REFUSE to get married anymore. There is simply NO positive outcome for men (Christians take it differently, but I'm speaking generally here) to marry a woman anymore. What do we get out of it? If we divorce, and there is no-fault divorces ladies and gentleman, meaning women can cheat and then divorce for not being in "love" anymore, and they get everything. Men also get to pay allimony, child support, and whatever else. Prenup? Forget it, courts will throw it out. So what do men get out of marriage? Women don't think of adultery or looking like a "slut" as a bad thing any longer, so it isn't like men do it for that. Kids? Women already have kids well before they turn 18. You get to be a father just by dating her. Congradulations! So what do men get out of marriage? Love? We can get that anyway. Marriage is only good for REAL Christians anymore. If you aren't one, you mine as well never, ever get married in your life. If your wife isn't a very, very, very strong, devoted Christian, you mine as well sign half your month's pay over to her already, and mine as well buy her a house and a car as soon as you meet. There are many evil women out there, they know how to play the system, and they do.

Divorce rate is what... 50%? So you have a coin flip chance of working out, even though 90% of all divorces are initiated by women, as well as any other relationship break up. Women are the ones who seek out divorces, and for things so silly as not being in "love" anymore, for them cheating or finding another man, for anything really. These days, women earn the same as men, have the same jobs, and the same everything, but women also automatically get everything in a divorce, even though they are equal? Why not split it all down the middle, and truly be equal? Change the laws on divorce, and women will stop seeking it. Change it, and women will stop marrying for money. You don't hear many men marry a woman for money. You see it all the time for women though! Why is that, when women are now equal to men? Divorce laws were set before women could truly earn a living on their own. Anyway, it makes men not want to marry, because you have a better chance of being financially destroyed, not to mention losing your heart and soul to an evil woman, than you do of actually working out. Getting married is a CONTRACT, that clearly isn't ever fulfilled. You can break that contract without a second thought. Courts allowed this, so now you have what you have in this country.

Anyway, please don't try to say that things would change if MEN would act according to the Bible. Most Christian men DO this naturally. Part of the whole "macho" manhood thing is to act like the man that the bible lays out. It goes both ways, on every single issue, yet Christian women on here don't seem to want to admit that it does. Why is that?

I think its important to note that not even the bible supports your theory on this. We are never born naturally godly. We are born natural sinners. Men arent naturally wonderful christian spouses and neither are women. Many would ask, if christian men do act according to the bible then why is it so hard for them? Same for women. You can't go stating your opinion like its fact without any backing. In todays western churches, women outnumber men 6:1 and 40% of kids go to bed without a Dad. I think the point others were trying to make is that statistically men are missing from church not that their awful human beings.

I'll also add on a side note that I own the Womens Resolution book as my husband owns the Mens Version, and my husband liked some of the resolutions in the womens book he added them to his as well, and I thought the others would like to read what it says:

  • I do solemnly resolve to embrace my current season of life and maximise my time in it. I will resist the urge to hurry through or circumvent any portion of journey but will live with a spirit of contentment.
  • I will champion Gods model for womanhood in the face of a post feminist culture. I will teach it to my daughters and encourage its support by my sons.
  • I will accept and celebrate my uniqueness and esteem and encourage the distinctions I admire in others.
  • I will live as a woman answerable to God and faithfully committed to his Word.
  • I will seek to devote the best of myself, my time and talents to the primary roles the Lord has entrusted to me in this phase of my life.
  • I will be a woman who is slow to speak and quick to listen. I will care about the concerns of others and esteem them more highly than myself.
  • I will forgive those who have wronged me and reconcile with those I have wronged.
  • I will not tolerate evil influences even it the most justifiable form in myself or my home, but will embrace and encourage a life of purity.
  • I will pursue justice, love mercy and extend compassion toward others.
  • I will be faithful to my husband and honor him in my conduct and conversation, in order to bring glory to the name of the Lord. I will aspire to be a suitable partner for him to help him reach his God given potential.
  • I will demonstrate and teach my children how to love the Lord with all their hearts minds and strength and will train them to respect authority and live responsibly.
  • I will cultivate a peaceful home where those who live there and those who visit will experience Gods presence not only through acts of love and service but also through the pleasant and grateful attitude with which I perform them.
  • I fully resolve to make today's decisions with tomorrows impact in mind. I will consider my current choices in light of those who will come after me.

How am I acting like it's a hard thing to find? :) All I said was that it was sprinkled throughout the Bible and I appreciated seeing it all in one place. I hope you aren't this trigger happy in your law enforcement career ;)

But, since you brought it up (not me), I will say that I've met a lot of men who call themselves christians who are not living up to this model, just as there are christian women who are not living up to the model the scriptures call us to. It's a very healthy reminder.

This thread was not intended as an insult to men, but an encouragement. You have greatly misinterpreted my intent.

P.S. - as a seasoned law enforcement officer (and since Courageous is about LE), I feel compelled to warn officers who might be tempted to photograph themselves in uniform for posting on a public site that many departments have had to remove their websites due to the large amount of photographs that are stolen from their sites and used by others to impersonate police officers. Just something to consider...protect yourself and your department.
