Hi everyone,

Would you ever, or have you ever, lied about your looks when it comes to dating? How did it turn out?

I read an advice column recently about a 60-something guy who was nervous about attending an upcoming get-together for an online chat group he was part of. He really wanted to go and meet the people he had been talking to, but he talked about the problem of not actually being the "thirty-something, muscle-bound, financially set" male he had proclaimed to be online. He also mentioned that because of this "identity" he had created, he had been receiving several flirtatious messages from the women in the group...

Of course, you read that this happens A LOT with online dating.

Have you ever had this experience? Meeting someone and they were completely different from who they said they were, or pretending to be someone you were not and then meeting someone? What happened? How did it turn out?

I guess I for one am too lazy to try make up stories... plus, I can have a bad memory :) and would never be able to keep up with all the lies. My philosophy is, I may not be all that impressive, but here I am, take it or leave it, and God bless either way.

How about you?

I lie everytime I say I'm tall, dark, and handsome. Only one of those is true!

lol, but in all seriousness, I'm pretty upfront about who I am physically. Unless I havn't been working out in awhile, then my lips are a bit tighter ;) lol

Psh, don't sell yourself short :)

Oh and yeah, that reminds me of this Will Ferrell sketch when he was doing Robert Goulet and he asked Conan "You work out much?" It made me laugh.

yes this happened to me once.

i had a friend from church camp when i was younger, we hadn't talked in years and he found my email address somwhere and we started corresponding again. i didn't remember very well what he looked like.. and you know people change as they age. so he sent me a fake 'updated' picture. then we both ended up counseling at that camp the next year.. and he approached me and admitted that he had sent me a fake picture.

i wasn't really upset since we hadn't been very invested in one another, i just told him that he had no reason to be embarrassed and its best to be honest.

but i think that if he had been someone i became closer to, it probably would have hit harder!

When I post or send pictures, I use the best pictures... they are all actually me, but the ones that make me look really cute. Maybe I should include some messy hair in a ponytail, just rolled out of bed pictures...

I don't think I've ever lied about who I am online. Sometimes I'll round my age up when it gets to be a month or two before my birthday, but that's about as wild as it gets.

I had one guy tell me that he was very independent and when we dated, I found out that that was most certainly not true. And I absolutely hate to be smothered, so it was one of the worst things he could have lied about.

A lot of people conceal their true identity due to stereotypes such as the younger the more attractive or tall=more appealing. I think it is plain insecurity.
