My pastor raised an excellent question that I thought I would share. If an unbeliever gave you five minutes this Christmas to explain why Christ came and died for us, what would you say?

You know, I've run into some people in the chat room who asked me similar questions. I would say that it was because He loved us.

Our Father’s desire is that we should turn to Him. He loved us soooo much that He gave His only Son to be a sacrifice for our sins, let alone the sins of the whole world. Who among us would subject our own son to suffer as Christ suffered for us. Would you not call that real love for each and every one of us?

It is for the love of mankind, His creation, that our Father did this that we might be cleansed by the blood of the Lamb that when He looks at us He see's the precious blood of His only begotten Son cleansing the many sins that we are all guilty of. And it is by the blood of our Lord and Saviour, whom we believe in, that we will be presented unto our Father, a church spotless, without blemish.

Joh 3:16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
Joh 3:17 For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.

The tricky part is that you're supposed to be talking to an unbeliever, someone who may not even believe that there's a God, so you can't start out with "Because God...".

That would be like someone saying to a christian that Mohammed was a true prophet because Allah...

Really.
If we don't plant the seed how can we expect it to grow?
And how would we know the ground on which it is sown?
For the seed is the Word of God.
And the Word is the Word of life and truth, the Word of peace and reconciliation, the Word of faith and righteousness, the Word of salvation.
For even the unbeliever who doesn't believe there is a God, can have a change of heart.

But you're supposed to be talking to an unbeliever. To them a seed means nothing. To them the word of God means nothing.

I used to be an unbeliever. If you tried to tell me about how the bible was the word of God I would have just laughed and called you a bible-thumping christian because that is what I thought of ALL bible-believing christians. To me they were just brainwashed bible-thumpers.

See, if you were trying to explain to another christian why Jesus died on the cross for us then all the things you said would be perfect. But an unbeliever would probably lose interest because he is not a christian so none of that would appeal to his sense of logic or reasoning.

I feel like I might be getting in way over my head here so I'm just gonna quietly duck out of this thread..

Even by your own testimony you have shown that the seed took root and started to grow. For the seed had to be planted first. For the seed is the Word of God.
Even my own sister who was a unbeliever who thought the same way as you stated above came to surrender her life after years of rejection, to Christ our Lord this year, Praise God!

If it's not the unbeliever (those who are lost in darkness) who we are to bear witness of the truth to, then who is it?

Anyway let me also duck out of this conversation for I don't want to take the discussion in another direction.

May God Bless you zeroturbulence!

Actually, no one ever witnessed to me. I came to Christ on my own after being an agnostic for most of my life. What changed my mind was my own investigation into the validity of Christianity, and that was not brought on by anyone. It was brought on by my need to have some kind of meaning to my life.

Sorry we got off on the wrong foot.

God bless you, too and glad that your sister came to Christ too.

Oh and I just want to be clear that my first statement wasn't aimed at you, 1Christianwarrior. I was just speaking generally.

I would say, He died for us because he loved us so much he didnt want our sin to seperate us from him. He wanted to make a way for us to be with him for eternity.

From personal experience it truly is the kindness of God that leads us to repentence. What better way to show the kindness of our God than to share with people why he died for us. I mean i cant even wrap my head around it at times.
