Depends on the venue, the singers, the instruments... Whole bunch of stuff. Basically you get familiar with the tools and trust your ears on when to use how much of them.

For reverb, less is definitely more. Usually in a live setting no reverb is required because the room provides its own reverb. (That's what reverb is for, to simulate the sound in a virtual "room" setting.) If you do use reverb make sure everything in the mix has the same kind of reverb.

See, the auditory center of a person's brain uses the reverb sound to reconstruct a mental image of the room the sound is in. If different instruments and vocals use different kinds of reverb the brain gets multiple room reconstructions and the person gets a generally bad impression of the whole mix. Best to set one kind of reverb and just control how much it is applied to separate channels in the mix.

And if you can listen to it and tell it has reverb, it is too much. Best reverb is when the whole mix sounds better, but you can't distinctly hear the reverb on it.
Aha! So, if I hear reverb on my snare but not my vocals, then something's wrong lel. This is useful info! Thanks a lot sensei :p

Eh, not so much. But yes, if you hear reverb it is too much. The overall sound should seem better, but with no audible reason why it is better. But if you can hear the reverb, it is too much.

Reverb is also a way of "backgrounding" an instrument. The more reverb, the further away the sound seems. (Again, the brain reconstructs the "room" sense from what it hears.) So any given instrument might need more or less reverb, depending on where you want it placed in the mix. Panning also helps - pan the flute 30% right, pan the lead guitar 43% left - to give the sound a bit of structure. Of course you probably wouldn't use panning in a live performance. Maybe, but not likely.

This is why professional recordings are made in a sound booth. No reverb at all. Then you go in and apply the amount of reverb you want to each channel post-performance.

For recording a live performance they usually have a direct mic on each instrument/vocal, and then one or more mics recording the ambient sound in the room. The room mics provide the reverb, and they can add or take out reverb as needed, while the direct mics provide the "dry" direct, non-reverb sound. Then the editor mixes to taste.

Lil, you are not a failure. You are very talented. You are strong and you are a fighter. There have been times when I have wondered at the resilience with which you pull through all the mess that life throws at you and still come out trumps. C'mon girl, don't give up! This too shall pass. I'll be praying for you.

Bah... Just tell them I'm your Uber driver and that you'll be back in a few weeks, maybe a few months.

On an unrelated note, I am so ready for this week to be over - but not sure that I'm ready for this weekend to begin.

You're certainly not a failure, Evie. Anyone who says so has no idea what they're talking about. And if you meant that you feel like a failure, it happens to everyone sometimes, but it doesnt mean its true.

I went to a middle school girl's basketball game and the gym felt like a sauna x.x

To the lady sitting in front of me with the little girl who was watching YouTube videos on high volume and then proceeded to refuse to take her kid out when she started crying and making a sound which I can only compare to Dori making whale sounds: :mad::mad:

To the cheerleader from the opposing team that did consecutive back flips all the way to half court: You the real MVP. I'd break if I tried to do even one lol

I kind of want to know why you went to a middle school girl's basketball game. I don't need to contact Chris Hansen do I? :p
