Question to you guys....

I was outside my house, refilling the motor oil in my car and WOW the amount of stares that I received from guys passing by. Whaaa...there is a GIRL under the hood!? Did I enter the twilight zone?! What is with men being fascinated with a girl being able to pump her own gas, squeegee her own windows, or perform regular maintenance on a car!?

Cars are a hobby for allot of men, so it's nice to see a female working on a car. The last girl I was interested in didn't know where to put the oil in her engine, and I think that's pretty common for women to not know a thing about cars.

I know nothing about cars so I don't fall into that category, but I've gotten some interesting (and amusing) responses when guys find out that I know how to play video games - and play them well. Also, that I don't like chick flicks.

I'm not a guy, so I can't say for sure, but I just read an article saying that societally (I'm making that a word now), women tend to play dumb and act like a princess waiting on her "Prince Charming" to "rescue" her based on her looks and batting eyelashes to get what she wants. So, when women are outside the stereotype of pink and frills, and have our own interests and know how to do certain things, we get different reactions. They (in general) are used to women saying "Oh! A fuzzy kitten! Dawwwww" so when I say "Oh! Can we play Nazi zombies?" or they see you working on a car, they just stare with their mouths open, with a "But...you're a GIRL!" look on their face.

Quite amusing, really. :)

ETA: Though...I still say "Oh! A fuzzy kitten! Dawwwww"

Pretty much this. It's a turn on for guys to see a girl with similar hobby interests, be it working on cars, music, sports or whatever

Once I was on a date and my car just conked out.
No idea why.
I acted like a man, and went and opened the hood.
I stared at it, poked at stuff, tried to look like I was doing something.
I had no idea what I was doing.

After a few minutes the girl got out, and walked up to the hood.
She looked at the engine, looked at at my confused expression,
and broke into a huge smile.

"I used to work for a mechanic honey, I can fix this right up.
Hand me the screwdriver.
And you... you just get back in the car and try to look pretty."

My manhood felt severely violated...
but as soon at the car started I didn't mind.

I posted this in another thread about why being single is awesome, but maybe Arwen didn't see it:

Life would be pretty awesome if you could spend all day under a car, while having a gf and still spend the whole day with her. :D

You should've seen the looks I got when I changed my own tire. ;)

yeah, I think it's just uncommon. Which, to me seems silly because what if there isn't anyone around to rescue you? Then what? But being rescued is nice...even if I do know how to do it myself. :)

Yay for knowing how to do stuff!

Might as well look good while you're doing it too huh? ;)

Kidding aside, I am the same way, I would like to be 'rescued' by a man that knows his stuff, but what if they're not around? You need to be able to be self-sufficient and resourceful. I remember over the winter, my windows fogged up- like COMPLETELY while I was driving. They had a nice thick layer of ice on the inside, couldn't see at all. So I put my 4 ways on and a fellow pulled over and came to see if I was okay. I liked that :) Makes me feel all warm inside hehe.

I learned a very important lesson about being "rescued". If a very nice looking guy stops to help push you out when stuck in the snow during a blizzard, be sure your parking brake is not on. :D Did I tell him? Ummm..nope ;)

I know what you mean though, arwen. When men find out about my weapons collections or I talk about the most vulnerable spots on the human body, they kinda look at me funny too.

What really annoys me: When I'm playing baseball or volleyball and a guy won't play his own position. grrrr :D But I've learned that they are usually trying to impress you when they do that. :D

It probably depends on the man. Some men would probably like a woman who also knows something about cars. Some men would feel threatened if women know more about cars than they do. And some men may consider it to be unfeminine. That might make for an interesting survey.

And that reminds me. I need to get the oil changed. There is no place to do it at my apartment or I might just do it myself.

you know that shock you feel when a guy can cook well, dress well, while still being a man and not going all metro?

And this is why no one can ever convince me that women are anything but trouble!!!

I always thought pumping gas, and opening doors was a chivalrous thing to do. Although I've gotten yelled at for holding a door for a young woman carrying a box a few years back in college. She told me she could do it herself. So I politely closed the door behind her and sat there inside the building and watched her do it herself. Does that make me a jerk?

No. It makes her rude. When someone holds a door for me when I'm carrying things, no matter their gender, "thank you" is the polite response. :)

See I never understood her action. It's happened to me twice holding doors for a woman. Does it make them feel that weak and feeble if someone holds the door for them? Do you feel feeble and weak and incapable if a guy holds the door for you Julianna?

Not at all. For me it is simply a polite, respectful thing to do for another person. I hold doors/elevators for people all the time, especially older folks. It's just a nice thing to do for someone.

If someone reacts badly to something like that it is more about their own issues than about your actions.
