(1 Peter 5:8) says-Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour: If there is no God, then why is there so much good in the world? Where does the good come from? ( Psalm 33:5 ) (Luke 6:35 and 12:32 ) (Hebrews 6:5) (James 1:17) (3 John 11). This question is associated with hell because many think God is the one responsible for the disasters and thereby mean enough to send people to hell. Their thought is- If He didn't cause the tragedy, then why didn't He stop it? This reasoning leads them to conclude that God is unloving and selected at random, who He wants to send to Hell. This is completely wrong! Furthermore, the evil that occurs is, for the most part, not caused by God. Evil exists for many reasons, and here are just five. 1- Satan is the god of this world. He brings the death and destruction, not God. 2- Men have a free will to obey God and be blessed or to disobey and be cursed. It's their choice. 3-What a man sows he will reap. 4- There is a law of sin and death, and it operates just like the law of gravity. 5- The earth itself rebels against sin.

It is caused by sin Therefore hell has enlarged herself, and opened her mouth without measure: and their glory, and their multitude, and their pomp, and he that rejoices, shall descend into it. Isaiah 5;14

If there weren't a God, why would it be bothersome if there was evil in the world? Why would it be considered evil?

If there weren't a God, you wouldn't be here to ask that question.

[h=2]Because God was loving enough to us not to make us into obedient puppets to do his every bidding, and to love Him because we are forced to love Him. Rather He gave us free will, free will to love Him by our own choice (because forced love is equated with abuse, not a quality of a loving Father). Along with the free will to do good, we also have the free will to do evil. [/h]"It is men, not God, who have produced racks, whips, prisons, slavery, guns, bayonets, and bombs". C. S. Lewis, The Problem of Pain.

Yep, what Arwen said.....basically, it's not God's fault we abuse our ability to make choices.....we've all done it

This is one of the great philosophical questions throughout history. The existence of evil is very real, but almost always troubling. Thus, people question why there is pain, suffering, disease, destruction, disaster, death, loss, etc...and there are multitudes of answers to why.

While I do believe satan has strong influence in the world, I believe people give him WAY too much credit. First of all, he's not a 'god' of any kind (as " is the only God), and thus he's not omnipotent. He doesn't know you like God does. He can't be everywhere. He's not some cosmic challenger to God. He's a part of creation just like all the rest of us, but in the spiritual realm. Angelics/Demonics is a little flakey as a study, though...so I'll leave the spiritual arguements for others or at least a better time.

All that said, we have the propensity for good or evil. Yes, this is a free will argument. In order for there to be 'choice' a counter option must exist. Thus, good and evil, light and dark, and all the other opposites which create balance. Evil or sin (which I define as that which is counter to God/God's Will), existed before Satan, and has just as much propensity in each of us. We tend to call this 'the flesh' or other such phrases.

So where does evil come from...from our choices. It exists because we're not all cosmic puppets functioning under fated design.

If you're one to believe in destiny, however, your argument is much harder to make.

If you see good and evil in the same terms as heat and cold, and also light and darkness, I think the answer becomes clear.

There is no such thing as cold, really. Heat is a form of energy...and cold is a word we use to describe THE LACK of that energy.

The same with light: darkness does not actually exist. There is light, and there is the ABSENCE of light, which we describe with the word darkness.

There is goodness...for we know that every good and wonderful thing comes from God.

And there is the absence of goodness.

Also, it is not uncommon for us to simply look at the random things that occur in our lives that we find unsatisfactory and immediately cry out, "Why am I beset by evil?" Just because something happened to you that you don't like doesn't mean that you are afflicted. If you want to see affliction, read the book of Job, yo. But Christ, Paul, and Peter (I think) all promised us that if we followed Christ, we would face trials. That's something that I think a lot of Christians miss - they think that putting their faith in Christ releases them from hardship, when that is NOT the case! Christ flat out GUARANTEED we would be taken through trials constantly, and our dependence on Him doesn't free us, but rather, gives us the strength to persevere, when we would succumb alone (Philippians 4:13, anyone?)!

Why do seemingly random people suffer? Look to the Old Testament: why did the Isrealites suffer? I'm not talking about the bondage in Egypt...if you listen to the Isrealites talk about it, slavery in Egypt must have been wonderful, because they were constantly complaining about having left and wanting to go back. They refused to acknowledge and respect the Lord who sent them into trial (Egypt) to strengthen them (they came out as an army that, whenever they sought the Lord, were undefeatable!), then redeemed them from the trial, and even when given manna and water from rocks, they grumbled and moaned. Sometimes the sons suffer for the sins of the father (father in the Jewish sense, meaning ANY forefather), as evidence when David had to hang all of Saul's descendants.

To those that do not know the mercy and grace given through Christ's blood, Yahweh is a pure and just God, and before Him can be no blemish. If He is the Light, then there can be no darkness. Imagine creating something you loved so very much, but because it's selfishness, it could never withstand your total purity, and it would forever remain separated from you, despite your love for it, because you are the light, and in it's freedom, it chooses the darkness? Always amazing how God makes a way for us to choose to turn from the darkness so that we can be with Him.

that is not the right question. we should be questioning ourselves. why do we as humans allow so much evil to happen? God is not to blame.

As long as the evil one exists, evil will remain on Earth unless every single person turns from their ways :)

specialtogod: Please note the date of the last post before yours in this thread. This is what we call a zombie thread, one that was long dead until somebody dug it up.

In the meantime, the thread reminds me of a phrase from a Chris Rice song.

Am I the fool, am I just a fool
For standing alone while they mock Your name
"Well if your God is so good, tell us why all the pain?"
I'm not sure, not so sure that God is to blame
