See the poll.

Stipulations:

1. You would have to keep this job until you turn 60 (or just not work at all)
2. You have complete job security
3. You would get a 3.5% (cost of living) raise every year
4. All other factors would remain the same for each choice

I picked 150,000 at a manual labor job because I honestly want to make sure that I'm well grounded financially, and I have somewhat large goals in life. Now I know I'll never get that amount of money in a year in my life, but it's also fun to think about the cool things you could do. :D (And of course...I'd tithe a good bit of it. I'd be willing to give up 1/4 or 1/3 of it to a good cause and my church.)

Once I read that you receive a raise every year, I picked the $30,000 because that is near what I currently make, without the guaranteed annual raise, so I figured, yup, the raise would make it even better. :) If there hadn't been a guaranteed raise every year, I would have picked either the $50,000 or the $120,000. :)

I also noticed that for some strange reason I have a really hard time remembering how to spell "guaranteed" and I have no idea why.

It was a bit hard for me to choose, and here's why:

I want to be married and have kids, and I want to be a stay at home mom for at least the first few years of their life. Having a job 7 days a week definitely wouldn't be conducive for that. At the same time, living is expensive. :p So, I chose what I considered the middle ground, and went with 8-5 at an easy, sit-down job for $50,000.

I chose a sit down over labor because I think I'm better at office-typing-sitting type of work than manual labor work.

Thinking more, though, perhaps I should have went with the 9-5 for 5 days for $30,000 because that'd be even better if I had kids and a husband. Hmmm, I almost want to change my answer to that...It's just hard for me to chose at this stage in my life, because I want to be married and have kids but that's not a guarantee.

I think way too much about theoretical/hypothetical questions.

I chose the 35k/manual labor/5 days a week, imagining the sort of job I would try to get if I were to have to be the one supporting my family, rather than my husband.

We can live just fine on that salary, even with two kids. I would want a manual labor job because I would otherwise become bored and probably depressed. I'd have to be home on weekends and around as much as possible while still making enough to support my family.

However, MAN, I am glad I don't have to do that at this point in time.

But you wouldn't have time to do anything cool, working 7 days a week. :p

I picked 30k. My true job(s) are a mix of desk-work and in-the-field work, but regardless, I need time off to rest and do other things.

haha true! But that's when I pretend to be sick and not come in for a day and goof off!

...That wasn't very Christ-like. lol

Also, I wouldn't be working all day. Just 9-5 and I'd be back home by dinnertime to watch a movie or do something fun with a friend. :D Plus, I like keeping myself busy.

Though I guess I should have considered church time! If I worked 7 days a week I wouldn't have time for church. Well, there's always the Saturday evening services churches hold (mine does at least)! :D

I would pick the very first option and use the days off for pursuing my own interests, business or volunteer opportunities, managing my home, or whatever. The idea of a fixed salary with cola adjustments sounds good in theory, but I know myself well enough to know I would be bored out of my mind would probably become complacent with whatever my skill level is, since theoretically, I'm going to be working the position for the same pay right up until I retire anyway. The higher income brackets didn't appeal to me, I don't feel like devoting that much time to a career. You can find ways to make more doing less, with a little creativity or entreprenurial attitude.
I thrive and grow best on challenges, so this job would be treated as a part time way to supplement income for whatever I REALLY want to do.
