Hey guys. I'm 22 and single. What is your opinion on masturbation? How do you handle it?

I find my sexual desire really hard to tame, and I have never had sex before, so masturbation is a daily thing for me. Still, I feel like it should stop.

Any thoughts?

I have a big problem with this, too. You might think it's easier if you're not a virgin, but that's not the case, it can be hard regardless of whether you've lived chastely or not.

Heh, I don't really have an answer to this question, I guess. :S

Pray about it, of course. See how that works.

And, appleseed, masturbation is definitely a sin. If our basis for deciding what sin is was "Well, someone might go to hell if it is!" then nothing would be sin.

Hi youngnazarene

I believe masturbation is wrong. Although the bible does not say "Do not masturbate", you have to ask yourself whether a person masturbating would please God. Was this the way God designed our bodies to be used. No.

Look at what Paul says to the Corinthians:

"All things are lawful for me, but not all things are helpful. All things are lawful for me, but I will not be enslaved by anything."

If this is something you are doing every day and can not stop, then you are enslaved by it. It can be overcome with prayer.

In Biblical truth it is not right. It is not going to send you to hell as no sin is unforgiveable.
1. You are diving square into the flesh,, you are allowing your flesh to burn
2. It is not walking in the spirit.
3. You feel guilty about it as you stated and I imagine this is the Holy Spirit tugging on you letting you know it is not your best for you or Him.
That being said. My friends, Love God and Love your neighbor, the rule and laws of penalty are gone forever. Jesus fullfilled the requirement in this law so you are not guilty. The thing about masturbating is it opens your heart to lust and imagining images of women undressed (obviously) and you are the bride of Christ so you technically are not being faithful to Jesus.

Just make sure that God is not going to penalize you for your shortcomings, but to truly follow Christ is to deny the flesh and do it out of love for Him not fear that He is going to get you!

Love to all!

I got rid of porn addiction. After being free for a whole year I think, I fell to mastrubation again. Shortly after that I fell back to porn. So for me.. mastrubation leads straight to porn. Also, have you ever mastrubated without lustful thoughts?

Romans 13:14
But put ye on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make not provision for the flesh, to fulfil the lusts thereof.

Even if you are able to mastrubate without sinful thoughts, then I thinks it's still making provision to the flesh.

Lately I have only had trouble with the temptation to watch porn or mastrubate when I'm home behind my computer, so I downloaded K9 Web Protection http://www1.k9webprotection.com/ It's a free internet filter, you can block all porn sites with that.

Of course the main thing is to pray. Don't think you can resist with your own strength, rely on God to give you the strength.

Some very good points brought up here. There is no where in the Bible that says masturbation in and in itself is bad, but what spawns masturbation? Is it possible to masturbate without lusting after someone? This is a question you will have to honestly answer for yourself.

Here is a video that I think is relevant for this topic:

Hey aplese, I have to agree with the other guys on this one. I think it is wrong. I definitely don't it'll send you to hell.

Jordan, I will pray about it. It just sneaks up on me, you know. I get home, tired, get ready to crash, and BAM! Whatever guys come across this thread, would you pray for me, too? It is something I definitely feel is part of my spiritual battle, and I'd really appreciate it. Jordan, I'll pray for you, too. brother.

Sharp: "I will not be enslaved by anything." Those are such powerful words. I'll try my best to focus on them every day. I appreciate your post very much!

Marksnet: Thanks man. Walking in the Spirit is such a challenge. My flesh wants so much. My tongue, my flesh, they burn. God Bless you, keep shinin.

Tegelik: God has delivered you, and is continuing to deliver you, brother! I cannot masturbate without lusting after a woman, and if any guy tells me he can, I wouldn't believe him! I used to watch porn, too, but once I got over it, it was very easy to stay away from it. Still, this lusting is the same as porn in all of its essence, and I will pray for you and ask that you pray for me, too, please. One of pastors will be preaching on deliverance this Sunday, and I will be thinking of this topic the whole whiile. God Bless you, brother, stay strong!

machew: Thanks for the vids. I'm actually in the Sanctuary with a group of all ages so I couldn't watch it tonight. But when I get the chance, I'll let you know how it helped.

Thanks guys for posting. I hope this thread helps someone else, too...

youngnazarene, I believe that since we made of Jesus our Saviour, we are the temple of the Holy Spirit. Since we are the temple of the Holy Spirit, our body belongs to God. Masturbation is from flesh and flesh's works grieve God and are called sin.. mastrubation is opposite to the spirit walk. I think that to win masturbation you need only those 3 requirements: You need to realize it's a sin and that it grieves God, if you don't realize this completely in the doubt you'll always accept the compromise. The second requirement is a strong will to live like God wants. And trust me he wants us to live following his will because it's really the best for us!. The third is believing that with God everything is possible and that he already payed on the cross so that we could be free. My advice is to surrender to God and tell Him that you can't win it with your strenght but recognize that everything is possible for Him, so rely on Him and pray. Also I give you some pratical advices:

1) Don't stay in situations that will put you in temptation if you know they will
2) David sinned with Bath-Sceba and his husband one day that he didn't go in battle and had anything to do. I found out that is true that if we do the opposite and all the day we work for God and avoid being lazy (lol) temptation doesn't find easily a way to us.
3) Jesus said in Matthew 6:34: "Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own". Well this verse is true also when we are facing temptations. While we are facing masturbation is possible that we think inside of us "ok maybe I can resist today, but how can I resist all other days?". This way of thinking will let us give up because we take the worry of all our life, but if we follow Jesus' advice and think to win temptation just day by day, it will become very easier.
4)Living a life in His presence is the key!
5) Know that he loves you anyway, so also if sometimes you'll have some days of victory and then fall again know that he loves you the same way and that he's saying "Go my son, go, I know you can do it, I don't condemn you!".
6) As I said before, we need to surrender to God and recognize that we are men and sinfull but Him alone can and want to set us free and he will if we totally depend on him

I hope I was helpfull for you! I'm not talking like someone who never had this problem, but I totally understand you and like you I decided to win it and trust me I found out it was very possible :)

I actually posted this on the wrong post, and so I'm reposting it here,

I would like to add a slightly different perspective on the subject. Masturbation itself, not being mentioned in the bible, leaves some to search for scriptures in order to ‘make it a sin’. I know that, for myself, when this was a serious problem, it was accompanied by many other connecting sins, which were more dangerous than the masturbation itself.

One of the main areas of focus , when seeking to be delivered from masturbation, regardless of the means you use to gain control, prayer, fasting, or just quitting, should be, what your personal experiences have caused you to become attracted to.

‘All’ addictions are the result of experiences we’ve had in the past. Simply because we may not be able to identify the causative factors, doesn’t mean they don’t exist. Parental relationships, abuse, (both emotional and physical), excessive guilt and shame surrounding masturbation and sex itself, are some of these factors.

Masturbation is the physical manipulation of the body to produce momentary pleasure, however once we add pictures, videos, DVD’s, mentally visualizing people, or viewing actual individuals, it becomes a type of idolatry, simply because we have placed ‘the objects of our desire’, or their image, in a position of being greatly desired or worshipped. Whether our unwitting partners in these activities are ever in danger spiritually, is controversial, but one thing is certain, these images are imprinted on our sub-conscious, which is why some continue to see images of nakedness and sexual scenarios long after they’ve completed the act of viewing the images. The primary danger, is not in the masturbatory addiction/habit, it is in the viewing material.

A great first step in becoming free from these desires, is identifying the triggers. Anxiety, stress, isolation, and boredom are some of these triggers. Fasting removes strength from the physical body and also has the potential to break spiritual strongholds, and so for those who practice this, it can be very effective.

There is so much I want to say concerning this subject, but I’ll limit it to one more point. The difference between, the person who is struggling with a particular sin, i.e. drugs, homosexuality, pedophilia, pornography, or a combination of several things, is that the enemy tempts, with the desire to bring you fully under his control. His efforts are not simply to cause you embarrassment, or to fail, but to cause you to ‘give up’, to surrender. He is actively trying to prove to God, that you will simply surrender your life to him, in place of accepting this struggle. Please understand that some have done exactly that, but you are not among those who sell out! You have accepted the struggle and are continually finding ways to resist.

Stop beating yourselves up! God loves you and you are Sons! God has not 'given you over to unnatural affections, or a reprobate mind! If this were so, you would not desire to be free. Press on and continue. God is faithful. You are a work in progress. Keep moving forward, seek out and receive support, and you will see that, with each month, and each passing year, a new strength over these issues will be developed, and you will do what previously seemed impossible.

Thank you, FirePanther!
It's nice to have some advice from somebody who has conquered this same struggle, and has found strength in and only in God Himself. Jesus's words that you quoted from Matthew are really beautiful, and meaningful to this subject, because in all honesty I do doubt myself. As soon as I get home to rest I "just know" that I'm gonna jack off, and I settle for it. Yesterday was an exception. And this morning I prayed about it just like I said I would, and really, taking this struggle day by day is the key.

You have been super helpful! Keep shinin. I will make a habit out of coming here every day to read through your advice and learn and adapt your advice to my life. "Living in His Presence is the key!" Amen: to so much more than just masturbation, too. Thanks again, my brother!

Songster,
Thanks so much for your post. It is meaningful and helpful, and I find truth written all over it.

The one thing that I haven't done even in all the ministry work that I do is surrender myself completely to God. I feel like I should be fighting all these battles (including masturbation) on my own two feet, with my own weapons, but you are so right! Surrender unto God is the only way! And oh, this heart is so stubborn.

Still, I believe that I can and will do it. Maybe I will fast. I will definitely pray. God works in such mysterious and paradoxical ways: There is hope in surrender! My Pastor's son was preaching on 'Hope' in light of the Advent Season that began this past Sunday, and now this paradox has my heart today. Thank you for your advice and your love!

What you were saying about past experiences being the foundation of all addictions really only began to hit me a couple months ago when I finally spoke to God about all the sin that I had committed sexually, and how annoying and hurtful it was to think about it. And I broke down. At 22 yrs old I was finally beginning to realize that my past had played me down, day by day. My sin was so heavy that even today it is a struggle to give over all of my past to God, but now that I've read your advice, my heart is set on just that. There is a lot in my past that the Enemy can and has and will use against me, but every time he does, I hope to think: Will I surrender to him, or to the LORD who loves me?

I know you don't have all day, but I want to talk about one more thing. When I was growing up I saw myself as a homosexual. I thought I was gay and there was nothing I could do about it. I made so many mistakes, but this past year I finally made a turnaround -- or so I thought! I began to fight homosexuality and give God my feelings, and my attraction for women grew stronger while my attraction to men began to diminish. However in this whole transition I started having a strong sexual desire for women that I had never encountered before, so masturbation was almost like a different experience. But it is idolatry! I thought that since I was envisioning women instead of men that it was 'okay', that I was finally being a man -- but I see now that even in doing so I'm not being a mighty man of God!

Thank you again, songster, for your advice. I really am taking it to heart. Surrender all unto God...

in love,
youngnazarene

You're very welcome. I have the utmost confidence that you will continue to move forward, seeing every mistake and period of discipline, as a learning experience.

I would like to further encourage you by telling you that one of my closest and dearest friends, who recently moved to another state, escaped the homosexual lifestyle, which he lived for years. He is now christian, married and has 2 beautiful daughters. He continues to grow in the Lord and his life brings glory to God daily.

God Bless you, and its a pleasure to have met another brother in Christ. :)

Jas 1:12 Blessed is the man that endureth temptation: for when he is tried, he shall receive the crown of life, which the Lord hath promised to them that love him.
Jas 1:13 Let no man say when he is tempted, I am tempted of God: for God cannot be tempted with evil, neither tempteth he any man:
Jas 1:14 But every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed.
Jas 1:15 Then when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin: and sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death.

1Co 7:9 But if they cannot contain, let them marry: for it is better to marry than to burn.

I suggest that you seek out a young christian woman to start a relationship with. Don't spend time with her alone untill you believe you could without being tempted to fornicate with her. And keep praying and confessing your sins to God.

I've dealt with homosexuality before I was a christian and believed at one point I was gay like you say you did. But Jesus was crucified for our homosexuality and confusion, that when we believe we would recieve God's grace, pardoning us from those sins and all other sin we had commited, save blasphemy of the Holy Spirit.

1Jn 1:8 If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.
1Jn 1:9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

Pray the Lord's prayer daily.

Also, try wearing pants when you go to sleep. Making it less accesible might not prevent it from completely happening, but it will help it not happend as much.

Don't let this lead to porn because that can happen too.

Godspeed and God bless. -Tyler

Its a way to deal with the sex drive. If you are doing it, you arn't hurting anyone of the opposite sex, which you might end up doing if you kept it in. Its basic science.

Jesus never said anything about it, although he said a lot about committing adultery with real life women. So if you do it, you arn't committing adultery so consider it a good thing. No sex until marriage would also be impossible without it. Its not a thing people talk about a lot, but it exists. So there.

And as a hilarious episode in Mission Hill (animated series) showed, 90% of people do it (male and female), and the other 10% lie about doing it.

People who deny are lying to themselves and to others, and to God.

Now porn is a bad thing and a real addiction like drugs.

That's not true at all mate.

I don't masturbate. I have in the past. But I haven't for a very long time. And I am well in control of my hormones. So the idea that everyone is doing it is false.

Look, the bible says that sex outside of marriage is sin. When you masturbate, you're having sex with yourself. This is premarital sex.

The body is the temple of the Holy Spirit. When God sees people masturbating do you think he is pleased?

I also agree with sharp. This is not true. I think your missing the part also when jesus says, if you even look at a woman in lust you are commiting adultery. What do you think your doing when your masturbating. Your only lying to yourself when you say there is nothing wrong with doing this.

You are right however porn is bad and a real addiction, but so is masturbating. More people struggle with an addiction to masturbating than they do with looking at porn. I bet your addicted to it as well. If you think your not, try it. Stop doing it for 30 days. In conclusion. There is nothing ''natural'' about it.
