a number of years ago, a friend of mine who was a rather experienced mountain climber (or "rock jock", as he called it) was talking about mountain climbing being a time when he felt "closest to God". at the time, and still rather new in my faith, i thought it was a curious (and ignorant) reference to altitude somehow being related to our distance from God.

looking back, i know EXACTLY what he meant. there are some activities or times that i feel especially close to God.

what activities, times or situations make you feel especially close to God? why?

what do those times mean to you? how do they affect you as a person, and as a Christian?

Walking through pine trees.... smelling the pine needles on the ground in summertime. That brings very special feelings of closeness with God. I was saved during a summer youth camp, and spent those days walking alone and praying or reading my Bible out under the pine trees. God awakened my heart that summer, and those smells and sights still awaken my heart now.

Hiking, nature, turning the worship music on and dancing around the house. Tough stuff to get when you are living in a city apartment. Space and solitude are some of the key ingredients for me to be really real with God.

Bible study bring me closer to God...I never thought I would ever write those words & mean it, but, it truly does...I heard a Pastor once say that "God opens His mouth when you open your Bible & closes His mouth when you close it"...I am not certain that I completely agree with that assessment because God communicates in many ways, but, for me this is where I meet God....Praying through what I have read & the insights I have been gifted through the Holy Spirit has been amazing...

Thank you for posting the question - God Bless!

Acceptance and obedience. Both can be strenuous activities.

Yes, like what Grace said, walking through pine trees, camping somewhere close to the ocean or the sea n' wake up in the morning when all what you can hear is birds singing n' smelling fresh breath. Even zip-line and paragliding when you're up their flying with no abstract between you and God. So basically being close to God's nature. :)

+ the space between the sleepiness wafting from my head and the bright eyed alertness ushered by my giant mug of tea in the morning. in that place, there is peace and gratitude for where i am, and the fresh mercies of this very day.

+ the quiet rhythm of my running gait seems to quiet my mind of thought and refocus me onto God

+ the roar of a crashing sea tide makes me feel so tiny and frail, and God so mighty and powerful

+ horseback trail riding, hiking or camping in nature -- the majesty of such wonder and design that surrounds me with inspiration. especially on the side of a mountain with an amazing view--holy and exhilarating.

+ those silent, early morning moments after i've turned off my light and started to quiet my mind. there is a sacred honesty in my prayer during those times --or perhaps renewed clarity. it's one of my favorite times of the day.

+ in worship and prayer with other believers -- there's something incredibly powerful about the gathering of believers all facing in the same direction. so often i find the emotion surprising to me.

+ those amazing moments when God's word smacks me over the head with some new insight, especially when it's a passage i've read hundreds of times and yet, never before noticed that intricacy or nuanced wisdom. or when i read a passage, and it feels like i've never read it before - as if it's fresh and new. or when it feels like a book that was written for me, personally.

Morning devotional time, walking in nature, singing and hearing music, when people give their testimonies, a good sermon, I remember my first time on a snowmobile it was so cold and crisp and I was riding along on the snow praising God and thanking Him for the snow that was falling it was a real special time of feeling close. Watching sunsets out on the beach here in Florida. Praying I know He is here.

oh you reminded me of one of my favorite "close to God" moments.

on the slopes, snowboarding (or even skiing) with all the pristine crispy air and brightness of the snow. i'm usually feeling awestruck, humbled, and giddy all at the same time. and yet, so incredibly peaceful.

great list! JL

Praying, talking to God. I think it's the most important, cause God want to have relation with us.
In a morning, I drink coffee with my God. :)
Bless you

The ocean ! I cannot look at the water without being reminded of how BIG God is and how big his love is. It reminds me of the verse 'what is man that thou are mindful of him?'

+ hearing a whisper of conviction from the Holy Spirit. when i know that i'm being chastised, warned, or cautioned about something in my life or my thoughts. there's something very "parental" and nurturing about my Heavenly Father guiding my life in such a very real, minute-by-minute kind of way.

+ when God provides a solution or a means to something that can only be an answer to prayer, or even a God-solution for a need i didn't realize i even had. seeing God work out details and circumstances in a manner that only He can do.
