I'm noticing something. The tendency to use some truths from Christianity for therapeutic purposes only. These truths are separated from the sum total of Christian belief.

Sometimes this is labeled as buffet style Christianity.

I see these four truths taken from the buffet, and used only for therapeutic purposes.

1. There is a reason for everything.
2. God loves you.
3. Be kind.
4. God has a plan. (Overlaps with 1.)

These truths are divorced from the complete package which includes discipleship, sanctification, obedience, etc.

People search for meaning in this sometimes chaotic, broken, and confusing life. Comfort and meaning can come from thinking God loves you. We find solace in believing there is a purpose and plan behind all of the things in life that don't make sense. It's soothing to the soul to know these truths.

People also experience relational dysfunction in many areas of their lives. They find comfort it thinking there is this loving God who is simply instructing us all to be kind.

It is true that God loves us, has a plan, and wants us to be kind.
These truths must be understood in their full Christian context.
The full context includes discipleship, obedience, sanctification, and many other things.

We must be cautious of separating these four truths from the full picture.
These truths don't exist just for the purpose of self-centered therapeutic comfort.
Truth is misused when it's just about us, and doesn't include the full teaching of God.

Such platitudes are usually emphasized at the expense of the following:

The Fall of Man
Personal Responsibility
Righteousness of God
Majesty of God
Life's troubles are justified because of point 1.

What gets my goad is the point that the supposedly soft joys mean so much less when they are not accompanied by the hard truths.

“If you look for truth, you may find comfort in the end; if you look for comfort you will not get either comfort or truth only soft soap and wishful thinking to begin, and in the end, despair.”

5. Believe in yourself.

...repentance, humility, the fear of the Lord... :)
