As a side note -

Honestly, I think women should dress for themselves, keeping in mind what would honour God and not for men, or for their peers or anyone else.

Keeping in mind God first, before even men , examining our hearts and motives should be a good standard. And the Bible does say this -

1 Timothy 2:9-10

I also want the women to dress modestly, with decency and propriety, adorning themselves, not with elaborate hairstyles or gold or pearls or expensive clothes, but with good deeds, appropriate for women who profess to worship God.

Simplicity and subtlety are the hallmarks of elegance.

And Marcel Proust said, "If only for the sake of elegance, I try to remain morally pure"

Dear Heaven Father:

Now I lay me down to sleep; I pray the Lord my soul to keep.
If I should die before I wake, I pray the Lord my soul to take. Amen

...oh, and Lord, thank You for sweaters and turtle necks and comfy cotton PJs. :)

Lately a topic of discussion in my house has been modesty. My Daughter will be 8 soon and my Son 9. We have seen a lot of poor choices in clothing this summer. We go to an amusement park pretty close to our house on a regular basis. It's sort of our summer thing, we don't travel a lot, so we get season passes and do stuff there.

Memorial Day we went, it was a sight to be seen. Women in very short dresses, super high heels, one woman you could see the bottom of her breasts because her shirt was cut so short. These slits up the sides of dresses, you could see underwear. My daughter was asking some questions because she doesn't see me dress like that. I wouldn't. For one, it's a park with rides and you're more than likely going to be picking cotton candy out of your clothes at the end of the day. You're walking around in a FAMILY park, it's not a night club. Comfortable shoes, shorts that don't show your butt and shirts that cover you.

Not to much to ask. I've told my children, no it's not appropriate to dress like that, even if you are going out to a night club. When you can bend over and the world can see what they shouldn't, no not appropriate. I've emailed the park twice this year complaining that their modesty rule isn't being followed and there is nothing done about it. Maybe I sound like an old pilgrim, but to bad. I don't want to see your goods. I don't want my kids to see your goods. Wear appropriate clothing period.
I went to King's Island recently. Thankfully in the main park, the worst I saw were just shorts that were a bit too short and some people used bikini tops as shirts (probably from when they were at the water park. Either way, it kind of concerns me they aren't bothered with it). I was just kind of surprised how many people there wore so little even at the water park, even some of my Christian friends.
I mean, maybe they talked with God about it and their spirit was at peace with it. Though I don't think I'd be at peace with wearing a bikini or a skimpy one piece at any shape or size, and I personally don't see how they could be at peace with it. I have a hard time wearing a knee-length dress, though I like wearing somewhat skinny jeans, though you don't see every bump and lump when I wear them, which is why I say somewhat skinny jeans. :p I guess it also depends on how close you are with God, and how much you really look for His approval in everything you do. How many times does anyone stop and think, "Would Jesus mind me wearing this?" It's not just about Mom or Dad's approval, it's also about God's approval, and I think that's something many miss.

No, JKalyna, that's a stock photo from a Christian website, but since I'm a brunette, and I did set my quiver full on their knees to pray when they were younger, that photo reminder my of those days. :)

I haven't seen any inappropriate pictures or dress on CC, just for the record.
That's because it's part of CC Rules. Few girlies, nonetheless, will go on CC video dressed inappropriately, and they are kindly addressed. Same song with some boyz not wearing a shirt on cam... Houston, we're no Go. :(

I'm a "Never Nude". It can be 125 degrees & I'll still keep clothes on because I don't want to mentally scar those I care for.

I agree with you, and I'm not saying you have to wear a huge dress or 1920's style bathing suit or anything. I think like you said, would God approve? Not that he'll strike you down or anything, but use your head. I have also noticed a trend that people not dressing for their size. I'm not trying to be cruel, I'm not thin, but when you wear the right size and style for your body shape, you look so much better.

I'm probably going a bit against the grain here, but I am someone who has always been unusually warm (when my parents first adopted me my Mom said she would carefully tuck me in every night... and I would kick off every blanket she used.)

I'm the type of person who, up until a few years ago, would still be in short sleeves in the dead of a northern winter. For the most part, I hate sweaters, long sleeves, and, most of all, button-up shirts and turtle necks. To me, they're the equivalent of neckties for men--a socially approved but horribly uncomfortable noose. I can't stand anything too close to my neck.

I now live in an area where there is a 30-degree heat difference when I walk from the garage into the house, so you can imagine how well I'm coping. I don't wear cute sundresses like most girls (just not comfortable in them), but I am almost always in shorts (not short shorts, but everyone else will be in jeans and I'll always be wearing shorts.) On my days off, I also live in tank tops. Some will say it's immodest to show off your arms in public--and I'm a bit torn on this. I have to admit that well-defined arms on a gentleman are a huge draw for me, so it's probably best that he keep them covered. However, seeing as I bare my own arms in public... that would also make me a total hypocrite, so I'm not sure what the best answer is on this one.

What I CAN say though is PLEASE DO NOT BE LIKE MY 70-something male neighbor who walked out onto his back porch in a t-shirt and skimpy red bikini underwear.

AIN'T. NOBODY. NEED. TO. SEE. THAT. I was doing dishes as I unfortunately happened to look up at the wrong time... and about fell over.

I wanted to open my back door and shout, "Hey, I know you're retired and all... but that means you should be able to spare 3 seconds to PUT ON PANTS!!!"

Yeup, iTore, I hear ya on the "never nude" note. I'm always, like always cover at the clavicle down to socks, including the summer. I've never worn those "see through" blouses whatever, miniskirts, shorts, neither sandals because I get cold easy. ...like cold feet. :D :D :D

...now, for the beach, I use a 1-pc swimsuit with it's matching skirt and a peachy long beach towel because I get cold easy right after coming out of the water. :)

i'm in BP's camp, sort of.

i wear arm warmers nearly all year long, because my arms/hands/wrists get cold, mostly while i'm working/sitting.

but i do wear them with shorts. : ) i'm like a bi-zonal temp zone.

i'm not even sure when was the last time i went to swim at a beach. that sounds delightful, bp!

I've always had the impression that tank tops are fine as long as they have more than just a thin spaghetti strap holding it up and don't have a super exposed back. Also, it depends on where you are. Like if you're in the comfort of your own home where no one else is gonna see you except you or if you're going to Walmart where everyone can see you.

then I don't see the need to dance on the margins of shaming your innocent sisters.
If the sisters are innocent, I don't think they will be shamed. The OP said not to be ashamed of how we look, and I think it's a very important point that is often left out of sermons about modesty. It's not too big of a leap for ladies (especially younger girls) to blame themselves for attention that they get when it legitimately is not their fault, and I very much appreciate Stilly making it clear that they shouldn't do that.

My late grandmother thought it was ok to go topless at the beach on a trip to clearwater in my childhood. She was in her 70s, I was probably 7 or 8 and wanted the earth to just swallow me up at the time. My uncle gently informed her that she needed to put a top on, and made her aware that it was not the norm in the u.s.

Yes, I have seen plenty of that around my neck of the woods, its just disturbing to think that some girls find it necessary to wear shorts that barely cover your backside and get mad when someone whistles at them. If you don't want that type of attention dress classy not trashy. Likewise, for guys keep your shirts on and especially your pants up, sagging to me resembles a babies dirty diaper full of garbage. For me personally I'm never without a shirt, even when I am swimming.

Depends where you are, doesn't it?

I mean, if you walk on the beach, you won't be too surprised to see a lady in bikini and a guy in bathing shorts,
however, I wouldn't like to see that in the grocery store (gross!).

I'm a sun addict , so if it's warm enough I wear a shorts and t- shirt. I feel uncomfortable in tank tops though (and they hurt my back) so no point in wearing those.

In Norway it seems to be socially acceptable for men to not wear a shirt at summer (no matter where they are). Strangely, even though I could, uh, enjoy, the sight a topless man in the right context, it is a absolute turn off if they do it "anywhere",
dunno if the guys feel the same way about girls.

And yes, the general ideas in this post apply to how guys dress and act as well.

Guys in tank tops showing their hairy armpits on cam at CC, gross.
