So my wandering thoughts led me to an interesting poll idea. What is your favorite prayer position? Standing, sitting, kneeling? Does it matter what kind of praying you are doing? Do you pray on the move? Spill all your prayer method secrets here and maybe find a few to try out.

I think I have prayed in all of them. I mean I probably look awful funny talking to God when I am out jogging, but it just feels like a great time to have a casual conversation. I will say that there does seem to be a deeper intimacy when I kneel in prayer. It may be just simply the churches I was raised in, but it is also that humbling aspect where I am simply on my face before my King.

I'm a bit boring. Sitting, standing, lying in bed. That's it.

some of my favorite times to pray:

that fuzzy, newborn part of the day, when i first wake up
driving
running
hiking
anytime i have to wait
when i am getting ready to go to sleep, reflecting upon my day and looking ahead to the next one

as previously stated, i pray in any position. i like to kneel when i'm praying in the evening, though i don't always do it. it does seem like my body in that position seems to bring my heart into a better state of reverence.

generally speaking, i sort of prefer to have an ongoing conversation with God. like a conversation that never really ends, so all the positions apply. : )

I have an ongoing conversation too with God. We also laugh and cry together because that is what friends do.

I'm saying I don't pray during the day while I've doing other things, but I don't really think of myself a praying in a favourite position. It's more just chatting with God.

Mostly lying in bed, but also walking If I am alone. My friend is very talkactive, so I'd be interrupted if I did it when I am with him :p

Mostly before I go to sleep every night in bed. When I wake in bed. When I am bible studying in my office, I'll close my eyes and start praying, especially If I've read something that touches me I'll bow down head in my arms and just pray. Love that feeling.

I thought this was in general, and was like we're sure running out of ideas for threads XD
I chose: if I am out for a walk or laying down but I have to be journalling my prayer, I end up passing out otherwise. At church, we have those padded kneeling benches and I like that, keeps me focused

Hi Cinder,

What a great topic of discussion! :)

I tend to pray a bit all the time, depending on what task I'm doing. Last week I was working overnights and we were trying to rearrange some shelving--I was having problems with a certain plastic bracket not fitting... I was like, "Ok God, you know I'm not very good at this... Is there a better way to do it?" and I truly believe He put it in my mind (I'm not clever enough to think of things like this on my own!) to try assembling the piece at a different angle... and it worked very well.

Like Gypsy, I pray a lot while driving as well. I was once bopping along, talking to God about something, and some praise song came on and I was like, "Oops, sorry God, I have to stop right now and sing this song to you so that I can worship you..." and I felt as if God was laughing a little bit, kind of saying, "But that's what you've been doing here all along."

My favorite means of prayer is when I'm flopped out on the couch or as a means to fall asleep, which usually takes a good hour (I read once, What parent wouldn't want their child to come and talk to them until they fell asleep?) Sometimes when I wake up and an in that "half-zombie-like" state, I also find myself praying automatically without even thinking about it (I guess my system is just used to praying when I'm lying down, ha.)

If I'm praying about something particularly embarrassing or very personal, I also have a tendency to cover my head with a blanket or a pillow. Yes, I know that's something a 5-year-old would do. And yes, I know God can still see me. :) But... I've done that in conversations with others as well. If an uncomfortable topic comes up but I feel it's really important... I'll still talk about it, but just ask that I can make it so that they can't see my face!

I pray all over the place. Not always what might be considered proper praying...a lot of the time, I'll be in the middle of something, and just start a silent conversation with God. Which is usually less a "conversation", and more me sharing stuff with Him, but...

I try (and often fail) to just keep that line of communication open with Him most of the time.

I do have a lot of times when I'll pray out loud, "properly", starting with Dear Lord and ending with Amen and all. I probably do that more often now than I used to, because I'm teaching my son to pray (so far we've only gotten down saying thank you to God, for...food in our tummies, blankets, toys, mommies and daddies and grandparents, lights, cookies, cartoons, and any other random thing my son thinks of while we pray...we laugh a lot when we pray together).

There are times when I kneel, or lay face-down. There are times when I sit and bow my head, or stand and look up. I pray when I walk, when I'm falling asleep, when I'm driving, when I'm shopping...but there are probably more times I fail to pray at all.

At home, kneeling along the side of the bed.
At the meal table, we sit for prayer, while at church, it's standing.

Im with lots of people here. i pray on the go all the time. But if I'm praying around the house as a dedicated prayer time I pace. I get all worked up in my prayer and pacing just feels right. Get all hand movementy! haha

I love praying when I cycle too. Nothing finer than hammering it out and talking with God. Not sure what's going on there, but it's awesome :)

This is gonna sound weird but when you live in a place with little privacy and are busy a lot I find the shower is a good uninterrupted time to pray. I do a lot of the quick while I'm doing other stuff prayers...As stuff is put on heart. I try to go on and say a prayer right then . Also kneeling.

Well I guess I should share too. The inspiration for this thread was remembering a day when I wasn't as alone as I thought and I was sitting on the floor praying when some people found me and thought that was really weird. For some reason sitting on the floor tucked up against a wall or two is one of the ways I really like to pray, makes me feel like I'm sitting at God's feet and just chatting with him. I also love praying on solitary hikes (I think I wrote a poem about that, maybe I should return to the poetry thread and post it). I don't try to do serious prayer lying down because I fall asleep. OK there's my thoughts.

I pray all the time. Most of my prayers are short and to the point. I stand, sit, lay down, but I don't kneel. I have a trick knee that likes to dislocate itself.

Paul says to pray without ceasing. I've taken that to heart.
