I don't have any life changing verses or words. I'm curious as to what you think a husband's role in a family should be.

I feel that a marriage should be a loving partnership, two people working together with common goals, serving GOD and loving each other. A man (and woman) should be role models to their children, how to treat others, serving GOD and loving and working together for the good of the family and the community.

What are your thoughts?

I just watched a video teaching about the Zebras and their role in Africa...

It´s thought-provoking how a "donkey" taught me well.

My thoughts on this are much like your thoughts. I do not believe that the husband should expect the wife to be his personal slave and wait on him hand and foot. A husband must be the spiritual head of the family as well as the man of the house. A husband should love his wife and place her consideration above his own. A husband should exercise spiritual control on everything that enters the home. A wife should be the one that manages the day to day activities in the home. These are just general thoughts about the role of a husband and may change depending on the circumstances. Above all else, and this is not negotiable with me, a husband must always remain faithful to his wife in all areas of his life. This is absolutely critical.

I agree with tourist.

A wife submits to her husband's leadership, he submits to her needs.

A wife helps her husband do his work, she does not do his work for him.

A husband and wife need to be accountable to each other for all ares of their lives. Which means daily communication is necessary.

They should each have their own time with the Lord as well as time together with the Lord.

I believe Oncefallen has summed it up and nothing further needs to be said.

If a wife has any further questions, she should follow the scriptures

1 Cor 14:35
If they want to inquire about something, they should ask their own husbands at home

So...women shouldn't voice their thoughts on what a husband's role is? Because I feel like you basically just told us to shut up.

Maybe you didn't mean it that way.

By asking me this question is this a round about way of asking me to be your husband

I've already been married to a man who uses scripture to put women in their place...not going down that road again :)

Husband's role: make da money.

Wife's role: spend it.

Kid's role: give them plenty of reason to fulfill their roles

hehe, even if we are going to take that literally, that was from a time when all women would aspire to marry. Those that don't today are then free to engage within the Christian sphere as they see fit right?? I mean, no Husband to defer too... sooooo....... marriage is shackling your intellectual freedom if you happen to fall into the female gender?? (rhetorical). Surely people can see there's a missing link here, even if they don't know what it is.

(the gentleman i've responded to seems to be an invalid response as he was being facetious. But my point remains to all who think that black and white)

That and be the spiritural leader of the home, he should teach his wife and childern in spiritural matters and lead by example.

I don't usually repost, but back in March someone asked a similar question in the ladies forum and it inspired me to get into the Word and look around for answers. I spent quite some time on it but it was a lot of fun. :)

What's Biblical womanhood as it relates to marriage and family?

Earns the trust and confidence of her husband, and brings him good all the days of her life (Proverbs 31:11-12)
Provides food for her family (Proverbs 31:15)
Teach her children (Proverbs 1:8)
Be her husband's ally, friend, and companion (Genesis 2:18)
Submit to her own husband as to the Lord (Eph 5:22)
Love her husband and children (Titus 2:4)
Yields authority over her own body to her husband (1 Corinthians 7:4)

What's Biblical manhood as it relates to marriage and family?

Love his wife as his own body, selflessly and sacrificially, as Christ loved the Church (Eph 5:25-28)
Love his wife and not be harsh with her (Col 3:19)
Treat his wife with consideration and respect as a weaker vessel but also a co-heir of the grace of life (1 Peter 3:7)
he is the head of his wife (as Christ is the head of the church) (1 Cor 11:3)
Teach his children (Proverbs 1:8)
Yields authority over his own body to his wife (1 Cor 7:4)
Not to exasperate nor embitter his children (Eph 6:4, Col 3:21)

Which roles or responsibilities are mutual?
Both mother and father are to teach and train their children in wisdom and the ways of the Lord (Proverbs 1:8)
As spouses:
- they are both to submit to one another (Eph 5:21)
- Carry each other's burdens (Gal 6:2)
- Each of them are to yield the authority over their own bodies to their spouse (1 Corinthians 7:4)
- Be patient with one another (Eph 4:2)
- Serve one another in love (Gal 5:13)
- Be kind and compassionate (Eph 4:32)
- Teach and admonish one another (Col 3:16)
- Encourage one another / build each other up (! Thess 4:18, 5:11; Heb 3:13)
- Do not slander one another (james 4:11)
- Pray for each other (james 5:16)
- Love one another (1 John 3:11, 3:23, 4:7; 4:11, 4:12; 2 John 5; 1 Peter 5:14; John 13)
