Many of you know that I teach a children's Sunday School class. I was going to work on a theme this year called Hero's Of The Bible. Do any of you know of any good kids books or have any ideas of who you think the kids can relate to? I did Daniel last year.

I'm asking here and not the Bible Discussion forum because I don't want to read, tell them if they don't do this, they'll all go to hell, responses.

^There's so much good stuff with David. Esther is another fun story because it's formulated so much like a story in the Bible. And Jonah is a good one too, even though he might be more of an anti-hero. And Joseph would also be great :)

Another good one to consider is Job. How even in the face of adversity he still trusted God. And refused to reject God despite all the peer pressure of his friends and wife.

Ooh, that's for sure! I almost left this site because every discussion on one forum is, "believe the earth is 6k years old or you can't be saved, if you read the Bible literally you would know there were dinosaurs on Noah's ark - you can't be saved if you don't believe that, everyone who goes to church x is going straight to hell! I'm mad at you and God isn't very pleased with you, either!" Every time I go there I find I am going to hell over some secondary matter most people don't obsess over.

On to the topic at hand, I like the book of Nehemiah. He got permission from the King of Persia to rebuild the walls of Jerusalem. There was a lot of intrigue and opposition but Nehemiah got the job done. He is really a good example of project management. He found out what he needed for the project, he got support from the Persian King and support from the Israelites, he quietly surveyed the area and he outsmarted his enemies.

actually noah is one of my favorite stories that seem to relate well to children:

obedience in spite of what others may think of you
taking on an nearly insurmountable task(s)
long-suffering and patience

mordecai & esther:

a lot of people seem to leave mordecai out, but he is definitely part of that story, but part of what made esther a great queen was her relationship with her dad (who was forced to wait in the wings, to protect her) who loved her and played a pretty key role through esther's reign, and the value of people who aren't necessarily the obvious hero.

joshua:

servant leader, extraordinaire...the dude worked for moses for 40 years! and then was promoted--and he was a faithful, influential, "get it done" kind of guy, leading the people of israel to the promised land.

he just seems like someone who you'd want on your side in a conflict, right? and i'm still moved by reading about the battle of jericho.

^Just to play Timmy Technical for a second, Mordecai was actually Esther's cousin who adopted her as his daughter :)

Actually I don't know why I pointed that out, but anyway Esther is a cool story. I've remembered it since I was pretty young because I listened to the Adventures in Odyssey version that was really well done, and it really made it come alive for me.

oh, pffffft, i'm glad you did. it's a good reminder. : ) i can be a bit of a stickler for accuracy and details, as well, and there's nothing wrong with that. ; p

esther is one of my very favorite characters/stories from the bible as well, and it was also my grandmother's name, which only adds to my fondness of the name/sake.

I don't have any ideas, but I do have a funny story.

I was teaching a little girl one time (she was the only one in the class besides her brother who couldn't be bothered to pay attention), she was maybe 6 years old. I had just gotten done going over the story of Jonah in the Bible. She grabs a Bible and says, "Let's read another story!" She flips to a random part of the Bible, and wouldn't you know it, lands in the 1st chapter of Song of Solomon and starts reading. I said, "Uh, let's find another book!"

:rolleyes::eek:

Well, you may want to have several "heroes" lined-up and depending on the age group, study 1 hero per week.

I'd consider studying the importance of,
a) having the Holy Spirit even unto death: Jesus, Stephen, John the Baptist, and Paul.

b) agreeing with and believing God in all circumstances: Jesus, Joseph & Mary, Noah, Moses, Joshua

c) all the heroes in the Hall of Faith: Hebrews 11

As for what to do in class, I'd give a brief summary of why So-N-so is a hero; then I'd go by age group.
K - 5th grade:
Construction paper & color markers for free-drawing a response to the question:
Why is __________ a Hero to you?

6th - 12th graders:
Bond paper & color pens to write a short poem about who is their Hero. For example,
Jesus
Jesus is my best Hero ever.
He was born in Bethlehem and lived in Nazareth.
He worked in Galilee, Jerusalem and Judea.
He restored health to the sick.
He restored life to the dead.
He restored hope to the hopeless.
He set the captives free.
He fed 5,000 at one sitting.
He had supper with 12.
Jesus is my Hero because:
He came to proclaim the favorable year of God.
He was crucified on my behalf.
He bled and died on my behalf.
He arose from the grave on my behalf.
He ascended to God the Father
On my behalf.
He promised to return
To live with me.
Jesus is the holy Friend of sinners.
Jesus is the Righteousness of God.
Jesus is the Lover of my soul.
Jesus is my Savior and my God.
Jesus is my best Hero ever.

SAMSON is generally a good kids Bible Hero because of his super human feats of speed and strength. His downfall and his great faith. Also, you can compare the power of his might from the Holy Spirit vs. Superman. It's makes for a great time with the kids. I know I grew up on SAMSON then Jesus became my ultimate hero as I became older.

When I was told about Jesus and His crucifixion as a kid. I kinda freaked out and didn't want to know about Jesus as it was too much for me I was 5 or 6yrs old at the time. But, I got into knowing baby Jesus.
