I took the train up to Glasgow today (a big place compared to my wee toon), and when coming out of the station I had a choice of eating venues (It was almost lunch time). There was a Fish and Chip shop, Italian restaurant, sushi bar, Burger King, KFC all close together (well pretty close together).

This got me thinking if I were to ask someone on a date...where would I take them to lunch.

So for a bit of fun, where do you think I would take them, and secondly which one would you be disappointed at (hypothetical of course).

P.S I wasn't actually there on a date or for the food, theres a wee Christian book store around the corner from the station I like to visit from time to time..

Depends on the person's taste. Best bet is to ask your date. Some would go for sushi, some would find it repulsive. Personally I find fast food factories repulsive, but some people actually prefer a Burger King over better restaurants. Just ask.

And when your date tells you, try to avoid saying "Eeeeewww!" Just go along and try to find SOMETHING on the menu you can stomach. For example, at McDonald's they do strawberry pies and they do them right. I'm not touching the burgers, but I could eat four strawberry cream pies and probably go back for more.

I'm not a picky person at all. It would totally depend on what we both wanted to eat, had time for, and could afford (I don't mind using coupons at all, and I always offer to pay for my own so a guy doesn't think I'm using him for something.)

And, there are certain CC members here whom I would demand that they teach me how to cook one of their patented favorite dishes (not necessarily as a date, but as a meeting of friends.)

I'm rather boring food-wise because I try very hard to keep within a healthy range but yet quick and simple, which, for me, means eating a lot of the same things repeatedly.

My all-time, can't-go-wrong favorites are:

Fast food--McDonald's Quarter Pounder with Cheese, Large Fries, and Chocolate Shake (though I do like Arby's and Wendy's as well... I don't like Burger King at all but if it was HIS favorite, I'd find a way to cope... maybe by playing dead... ha ha ha... because even if I was only playing, the unhealthiness of the meal will kill you anyway!)

Ah. All-American classic fat and calories at their best.

Medium-range--Olive Garden. Shrimp Alfredo. Tiramasu. Heaven.

Most Expensive Meal I've Ever Had--On my honeymoon with my then-husband, we went to Disneyworld's Epcot and ate at the Japanese restaurant that cooks your food in front of you. We both had steak, and at the time (in 1998), the bill for both of us was almost $100. It may have been a Japanese restaurant, but we ordered "The Whole Enchilada", so to speak. As you can see, I also like desserts. :D It was totally outrageous and definitely a once-in-lifetime experience, but OH SO GOOD. I've never paid that much for any meal since.

Not to mention all the pictures we took of our favorite characters, such as Tigger, which was an added bonus.

Hmmm, the Fish and Chip Shop seems like the most quaint and local place of those you mentioned, so I think you would take a date there. I find local places most appealing. Second choice probably the Italian restaurant. Sushi would be good if your date has already expressed a love for sushi. Avoid fast food chains at all cost!

And, welcome back Phil. :)

I love Epcot but the only place I ever ate there was inside the attraction, 'The Land'. I did enjoy a meal at the Rain Forest Café at Downtown Disney. I love Olive Garden.

Tight leather pants, a closely cropped stache and a KFC drumstick spells success at any Scottish venue.

gypsygirl a fast food place doesn't make you bus your own tray. Leave it on the table if you want. They're not gonna stop you at the door and make you get the tray.

I'm very biased as I love love love sushi! But depends if it's good sushi or cheap sushi.

Hmmm... KFC just seems gross to me after all the things I've heard about their chicken.

I think it depends if your date is a picky eater or not as well. I am not a picky eater at all... My weakness lol.

There have been some dates that were sweet and earthy, but I think they would all have objected to cannibalism...

Mmm, Italian. I could eat warm, homemade bread all day.

There's a fantastic Italian place where I live that serves endless homemade bread. There is a plate of spices and herbs and you pour extra virgin olive oil on the spices and dip the bread in it. It's better than butter. The bread is perfect because the outside has that wonderful crunch but the inside is soft.

This thread isn't about bread, though. Whoops.

To me, fast food is never a date. That's not to say that one can't have a conversation over fast food...but, I prefer something a little more...brunchy. A dinner date at some place that also serves dessert is a bonus, because then you have just cause for dragging conversation out further. "We can't leave yet. They have key lime pie. I don't say no to key lime pie."

Corner Bakery is up my alley for this sort of thing. So is Steak'n'Shake. But if I'm in El Paso/Las Cruces, I'd rather do something local:
C R A V E
Tom's Folk Cafe
G2 | Geogeske | El Paso, Texas - El Paso Restaurant, El Paso Dining
4th and Goal Winghouse
Home | Sparrows Spirits and PiesSparrows Spirits and Pies | Just another WordPress site

Third date, though?
PICNIC. Completely prepared by me. Because that's how I roll, yo.

I don't know when, but at some point Tintin is taking me to a Mexican restaurant to eat copious amounts of tacos. That's all I'm saying.

(Man, I talk about this guy a lot.)

You do talk about Tintin a lot, but then again, I talk about you a lot too. We must like each other, A LOT! :)

Out of the options you gave, I would take her only to the Italian restaurant. I like all the other shops, but I would never go there with my date until we have known each quite well and I am comfortable with her. The reason is that I don't think the other places have a 'date-friendly' ambience. I may go there with her only if I want to chill out and have a nice time.

My ideal options for a date are -
- Any restaurant
- A resto bar (after a few dates)
- An all-you-can buffet
- Street food vendors (after a few dates, they MUST BE hygienic)
- Fine-dining restaurant (only when I want to propose to her)
