I started to post this in the ladies forum, but since a lot of this stuff will work for guys too, I'm posting it here. :)

Have you ever had people assume that you were high maintenance because of the way you look?
Do people ask you for health and beauty tips?

If so, here's a place to share some of your secrets. Here are some of mine:

1. You don't have to spend a lot of money on beauty treatments. These are some things I've learned, many from gorgeous elderly relatives.

NOTE TO THE GUYS: They will work for you too and, due to the ingredients, no one will know but you. :)

skin scrub: A paste made from sugar and lemon juice. Feels great. Smells wonderful.
whiten teeth: A paste made from baking soda and lemon juice, but don't do it more than once a week - can damage enamel
honey and cinnamon make a great facial mask, as does a raw egg

Other common things around the house that are useful to the skin: tomato, lemon, banana, apple cider vinegar (helpful to fade scars/marks you don't want - be careful...can burn), hydrogen peroxide

2. EXFOLIATE your entire body. Make your skin WORK. Lazy skin is dull skin. Don't forget your feet. If you exfoliate your feet as often as you do the rest of your body, you don't need pedicures as often. A few minutes with your scruffy in the shower followed by baby oil does wonders.
3. Be careful of sun damage. Use sunscreen and wear sunglasses to avoid "laugh lines" around your eyes. Other than smoking, I can't think of anything that ages your skin more than sun damage.
4. Either wear nail polish or don't. Chipped polish is nasty. Maintain your polish or just give your nails a nice buffing. Shorter nails are easier to maintain.
5. If you need glasses, WEAR THEM. Squinting causes wrinkles. So does frowning. :)
6. Give your skin a break from makeup as often as possible.
7. Tips about clothes:

Tight clothes are not your friend. They make you look larger than you actually are most of the time. Wear clothes that fit you, your body type and your age.

Tips for building a nice wardrobe on a budget, especially if you have to dress a certain way work-wise (men and children too):

Watch for clearance sales and learn when they happen at different stores (mostly at change of season). Who cares if it is last year's style if you like it and it looks great on you? Most people don't even know what is "in" anyway. :) Fads are for tweens.

Shop at places like T J Maxx, Gordman's, Marshall's, Burlington, etc. Same brand names, same quality, MUCH more reasonable prices (not just for men's/women's/children's clothes...shoes and household items as well).

8. Hair tips

"Dusting" is very important. Dusting is having the split ends removed. Once ends are split, they will continue to split and will make your hair dull and unhealthy. I have very thick hair, so I have it thinned out every couple of months.

Give it a break from products from time to time. Let it rest and breath.

I only use hot rollers, irons, etc. on mine from time to time. I also try to let it dry on its own as much as possible.

Cheaper hair dryers seem to be easier on my hair because they don't get as hot.

And now my BIG secret: A vitamin supplement called Hair, Skin and Nails. Men will especially like it because it contains a substance that promotes hair growth and thickness. BUT...ladies, you'll need your razor more often. :)

BEST HEALTH/BEAUTY TIP EVER: SLEEP. If you don't get enough rest, it will show in so many ways.

People ask me about this stuff all the time, so I'm sharing. I hope others will share too. :) It doesn't take a lot of time or money to take care of yourself.

BUT....the best beauty tip EVER came from my gramma: Pretty is as pretty DOES

Out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks. Let the beauty God puts within you flow. The peace that comes from God shows as well...and it's beautiful.

Two more tips for skin.. exercise and hydration :)

Sweating actually cleanses your skin from the inside out and exercise improves your circulation which also gives you that healthy glow. It also helps your brain through improved circulation.

Staying hydrated (drinking enough water throughout the day) helps prevent dry skin and keeps you from being dehydrated.

Want glowing skin? I have been told more than once that my skin glows and I grin because all I did was have a mental conversation with God and inwardly laugh at His responses. I guess getting that pure joy from Him makes your skin glow.

-For healthy locks of hair, eat avocados (seriously), also rinsing your hair in vinegar will add some shine. And girls, if you are like me who likes to chop your hair off and then wish for long hair back fast: exercise and take prenatals (you don't have to be pregnant to take these).

-Freeze your eyeliner 15 min prior to applying your makeup; this way it won't crumble but easily glide along.

-Hilariously, you can rub pepto-bismol on your face as a mask. 2 tsps. Let dry 15-30 min before rinsing off with warm water.

-And the best beauty tip: smile (this is your best and most beautiful asset) :D

I have heard about the Pepto-Bismol thing, but I've never tried it. :)

I've also heard of putting Prep H on blemishes. :D

Me neither! I am curious to try the Pepto. Oh and also Prep H is good for the bags under the eyes :)

Well... This body is only temporary so I spend most of my time focused on the everlasting. :). No one ever asks me for beauty tips... I wear scrubs to work and scrubs at home. I dress casual or nice when I go out with friends but that's about it!

I believe the thread just got Jesus Juked!

There is a female user who was actually told by another female user that her efforts to lose weight and be healthier were not glorifying God and she was to focused on herself. Does God want us to be out of shape blobs? I think not!

Being healthy and keeping oneself maintained is good practice in my opinion. It IS the temple right?
Coming from a very physically disabled person such as myself who is watching his body deteriorate faster then most people: if you {not Raine, but meaning you as in general audience} don't want to keep YOUR temple in good shape, I would be glad to evict you and take over so as I can have a functioning one.

Also I got this witch hazel stuff which is supposed to clean the pores well...maybe it is a bit harsh on the skin. Seems to be ok though.

Witch hazel is great as a toner and it can cut through the grease on your face if you don't have time to do your regular routine.

I use a vinegar rinse on my hair at least once a week. It strips off the excess oil, can remove build up from other products and closes the hair shaft to make it smooth and shiny.

I am NOT saying this applies to Raine at all, as I've seen some of her posts and think she's a great person, but I've observed many women who will say such things, especially to other women.

May I be honest? Now again, I am NOT saying this about Raine, but what I have observed... is that the women who "Jesus Juke" other women and say they are all about the spiritual and don't put an emphasis on the physical... are often really saying this because they're jealous and insecure.

I have a condition called PSCO that only affects women, as it concerns the ovaries. One of the symptoms (because it affects insulin) is obesity and a near-impossibility to lose weight. I'm a normal, everyday person who could, like most people, stand to lose 10 pounds or whatever else. But I'm not impossibly huge either (as I've written before, I wear a size 6 jean) and other women have made "comments" to me before, such as, "I'm surprised you're not A LOT bigger than you are," or, "How can you possibly stay that size?"

It was interesting to note that one of the women who said this to me was eating Arby's for lunch: a deluxe roast beef sandwich with cheese sauce dripping off the side, large curly fries, and a large full-sugar pop. I LOVE all kinds of food that's totally bad for me... but I was eating carrot and celery sticks, wheat crackers, and two spoonsful of peanut butter. I'm always amazed that people will sometimes make derogatory comments without making the connection. Dieting and self-care is HARD work and I have a LOT of failures but that also doesn't mean I'm somehow less spiritual for trying.

Emilie Barnes, a well-known Christian author, advises women in her book, "15 Minutes Alone with God" to cultivate, develop, and preserve their individual femininity because it's a character that is much-needed in today's harsh world. She strongly advocates women taking the time to care for themselves, and recommends many of the treatments listed in this thread.

She also wisely reminds us that for those of us who hope to be wives someday, taking care of yourself "invites your husband to want to be close to and hold you--and ONLY you."

Now of course there is such a thing as vanity. But self-care is not a sin, and if you're blessed enough to go to special treatments or salons, you are helping to support someone else's means of living and family. You may even make a connection with someone that allows you to invite them to church. Self-care is neither worldly nor somehow "lesser" on the radar of heavenly credits when done in balance and Godly intentions. I've only had 2 salon manicures in my life, but they were heavenly. The rest of the time, I do whatever else needs to be done at home.

Now, to make this post legit: for anyone wanting to "sneak in" more exercise... I purposely park much further from the a store's entrance than I need to. However, after having parking in a remote area of the lot one day and having some stranger rap on my window for money (I felt unsafe), I make sure to park in an area that's still populated.

I take the stairs instead of the elevator whenever feasible, and I try to walk two times around the perimeter of a store (especially larger places like Walmart) before I do my actual shopping. If I'm lucky, they'll be so much to look at along the way, I won't even notice I've walked an extra 30 minutes.

I'm not high maintenance at all. I barely wear makeup hardly ever. After I take a shower, I let my hair air-dry and I dont put any products into it. My clothes consist of t-shirts, sweatpants and pajamas. LOL. :)

Oh and btw, pardon my ignorance, lol, :) but what is a Jesus juke? I've heard about it on here but have no clue what it is. Please enlighten me so I can add it to my list of things I learned this week. :) lol jk..

I suppose that, to me, suggesting that one has to choose between taking care of the good health God gave us (inside and out) and deepening one's relationship with Christ is like saying one has to choose between cleaning one's house/servicing one's car and deepening one's relationship with Christ. It doesn't compute, but was expected. :)

The ascetics are every bit as heretical as the materialists.

  • Don't go to sleep with makeup on, no matter how late you stay up, no matter how tired you are. No excuses. Wash every bit of it off.
  • Exfoliate all over - dry brush before showering.
  • Satin pillowcases - easy on the face, easy on the hair (great for avoiding breakage)
  • Too many scents - between scented laundry soap, scented fabric softeners, scented shampoos, scented bodywashes, scented deodorants, scented lotions, scented perfumes -- calm that mess down. if you really like a particular fragrance, use it and keep your other products fragrance free.
  • SPF - use it. errday.
  • your eyebrows are fine, toss out those tweezers and embrace them and all their loveliness.
  • zero is spot on - drink lots of water. stay hydrated.
  • a camisole underneath a blouse, a professional shirt, a dress, etc will create a cleaner look, your outfits will fall on you better, and a camisole offers a little more (dare i say it) modesty.
  • hair - find what works for you. personally i wash mine as infrequently as i can reasonably get away with, my hair thrives on fewer shampoos
  • blowdry wet nails with a hairdryer.
