Today after my Sunday church service, the pastor handed out small vials (Is that the right word?) of anointing oil to everyone who was there. During church, the oil seems to be saved for only "special" occasions, like when you're being prayed for at the altar. I've never actually had a personal vial of it... and I'm sorta dumbfounded. Should I save this only for special times like they do at church, when I really need help with something? Or would it be equally as appropriate to anoint myself before praying or doing a daily devotion?
If it's not too much trouble, directing my to some verses about anointing (Like the hows and the whys) would be nice ^-^' Thank you :)

EDIT: Fixed some grammar

Anointing oil? I'm not super familiar with this at this point in time.... What was the pastor preaching about? Is it relevant?

James 5:14: "Is any among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord"

This is the origin of the Catholic Sacrament of The Anointing of the Sick.

In terms of blessing/anointing yourself with oil, I see no problems. :)
