Hello everyone,

I am new to this forum and I do not see myself as a Christian (yet), but I am trying to find meaning and purpose in life. The idea that I am living this life that is going to end one day, scares me and I don't understand what the meaning of all of it is. What is the use of living my life if I know it is going to end one day?

I have been struggling with this for months now, and it is very tiring and confusing. What purpose and meaning does God provide in your lives? How did you find this purpose? Do you recognize this feeling of doubt and fear towards the meaning of life?

Thank you all!

Hey rose, thank you for asking.

I think it's natural to sense on some level that something about life is never meant to end -- the same is true about love. When we really have it, we sense spiritually that we need it to be an absolute. Even if the forms of it in this life don't last, they speak to us of something greater that will never end.

In a sense there are as many meanings to life as there are people, and in relationships we combine our meaning and what is inside of us is multiplied between us. Although some people don't live this way, and make no room for true meaning to grow inside them. You could say they are dead inside, and the problem of this life is that all of us have some death inside of us, something that can't go on forever and has to be laid to rest so the real us can go on.

That is where Christ steps in, to set us free from everything less than the full abundant life and relationships which we were meant for even before our life here began. He brings us to God, 'the father of lights' who brings all of our meanings together in a way that can always increase and compliment eachother and never has to end. The kingdom of God is built on relationship and being our true selves, in him and one with him.

For I know the plans that I have for you,’ declares the Lord, ‘plans for welfare and not for calamity to give you a future and a hope. Then you will call upon Me and come and pray to Me, and I will listen to you.You will seek Me and find Me when you search for Me with all your heart.I will be found by you...' (from jeremiah 29)

also, here's a quote that might apply.

"Everything that's good has something in it that goes on forever. The eternity of these things makes them more real, and the rest a shadow of reality which we passed through to find them. Time illustrates the timeless with things that can't last, and with things that can't end."

The short answer: you’re here in the flesh to choose either God or Satan. Most of the world go with Satan.

Also, no one has stopped living yet. Yes, the flesh-body dies; however, only God can kill your soul.

Matthew 10:28 And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.

This is important that you understand that there is only one person that can kill both your body and the soul, and that person is the Almighty God Himself. He created both your body and your soul, and just as He created both, He also can destroy both body and soul. This also documents just where it is that the wicked souls will be destroyed.

So the only thing that the true Christian has to fear, is to commit the unforgivable sin, and that can only be committed when you are delivered up to the synagogues of Satan, and you refuse to allow the Holy Spirit to speak through you. As you do your witnessing the Holy Spirit will protect you all the way. Only God's elect will be delivered up, those bound in traditions need not fear of sinning this sin, for they will not be turned over to Satan because they will be there already.

Ecclesiastes 12:6-7
6 Or ever the silver cord be loosed, or the golden bowl be broken, or the pitcher be broken at the fountain, or the wheel broken at the cistern.

The "cistern" is the clay flesh body that our soul lives in. The cistern is built to hold the water or life that is within the flesh body, but once that bowl is broken the water or life leaks out of it, just as water leaks out of this flesh body. The "silver cord" is what holds your soul and the spirit together with the flesh body. We can call it the process of thought, which is the intellect of the mind, or soul.

When one is brain dead, there is no electrical impulse within the brain, and mankind is considered dead, even though the physical body may still be pumping blood. Life support systems are generally discontinued in most cases.

When that silver cord parts and the heavenly Father allows it to happen, and this flesh body becomes biologically dead, the very inner man departs for this physical body and returns to the Father. This decaying body will never be used again, ever. For the soul has entered into its new incorruptible body.

7 Then shall the dust return to the earth as it was: and the spirit shall return unto God who gave it.

Then when? After the silver cord breaks, the mind is brain dead, and the body loses its life. Then shall the body "dust" return to the earth as it was, before it was formed into food, and entered your mouth as food to make your flesh body healthy.

The spirit is the intellect of the soul, that gives the soul its identity. This is not complicated. When the body dies and goes to the grave, the physical body will never have a use again, for the soul has returned to the Father, to God who created it in the first place. Because this is a promise of God, it should be what all Christians look forward to all the days of their lives. That is the day that we will be with the Father and Jesus Christ is heaven, not at some distant time in the future.

When a man gets to the point of not being able to understand this promise that at death the soul goes immediately to be with the Father, then he forms his religious, man-made ideas, and sidesteps what God's Word teaches. Friend, it takes only a short time for the body to decay, and there is nobody there to resurrect. The body returns to the dirt that it is made of, and the soul departs from that body never to return to it.

God creates the flesh body for your soul to occupy, and He places your spirit within your soul. That is what gives your soul its identity. Then just as God gave it for a brief time, He will take your soul back to Himself, when the flesh body stops having a life.

I suggest that you find a good bible teacher.

Hello Rose! :) I'm so glad that you're here and that your asking questions. It shows that you're searching - that's good. :D
What is the use of living my life if I know it is going to end one day?
“When the Son of Man (Jesus) comes in His glory, and all the angels with Him, He will sit on His glorious throne. All the nations will be gathered before Him, and He will separate the people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. He will put the sheep on His right and the goats on His left. “Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world.... Then they (non believers) will go away to eternal punishment, but the righteous (believers) to eternal life." Matthew 25: 31-33 & 46

This verse shows us that life is really never going to end. Now it'll end here on earth, but we will live for all eternity, we'll either live in eternal punishment or eternal life. Now there's verses that talks about how our bodies die but we live on forever, but to save space and time, I won't go into all that. The important thing here to know is that we are told to "Choose you this day who you will serve". (Joshua 24:15). Our bodies have to die because of it's sinful nature. Our soul is doomed to eternal punishment because it has to pay for sin - for the wages of sin is death (Romans 6:23) But there's good news! :D Our soul doesn't have to be doomed to eternal punishment. That's why Jesus came to earth. God our Father so wants a relationship with us, He wants us to spend all of eternity with Him, living an eternal life. He loves us so much that He provided a way for us to live with Him. Our doomed soul can't live with Him because of how dirty it is from sin. God provided a way that our soul can be cleansed so we can boldly go to Him and live for all eternity with Him. For, "This is the testimony: God has given us eternal life. This life is in His Son. He who has the Son, has life. He who does not have the Son of God (Jesus), does not have life." 1 John 5:11-12.

All you have to do is "If you declare with your mouth, "Jesus is Lord," and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved." Romans 10:9. For, "Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved." Romans 10:13. That's all you have to do. Just ask, call on Him, believe, and you will not perish, but you'll have eternal life (John 3:16). It's a free gift, you don't have to work for it. You are saved by grace through faith. It's a gift of God, so no one can boast about how they got to heaven. (Ephesians 2:8).

What purpose and meaning does God provide in your lives?
He gives me hope and a future. He helps me through my every day life's struggles and ads more joy and peace then I could ever imagine or explain. The more I spend with Him the more I love Him and the more I can feel Him love me. I see Him working in my life and the lives of those around me and THAT's exciting!
How did you find this purpose?
Jesus said, "Seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness and all these things shall be added unto you". Matthew 6:33 I put this verse into practice and that's how I found this purpose. I sought Him by reading His Word (The Bible) and praying, "Father, show Yourself to me. I want to know more of You."
Do you recognize this feeling of doubt and fear towards the meaning of life?
Yes. It is scary. However, when I put Matthew 6:33 (the verse mentioned in the previous answer) to practice, that fear started to go away and I found Hope. I found Peace. I found Joy.

"Taste and see that the Lord is good; blessed is the one who takes refuge in Him." Psalm 34:8 Just call out to Him. Try Him, that's what this verse is saying, "Try Me" says the Lord. I know you won't regret it. :) <3

Oh, I can Hear God saying it in my mind now, "Oh, my beautiful Rose, Come to Me!" (Matthew 11:28). "Come to me...."

Isn't it humiliating to be told that we must come to Jesus! Think of the things about which we will not come to Jesus Christ. If you want to know how real you are, test yourself by these words -- "Come to me...." In every dimension in which you are not real, you will argue or evade the issue altogether rather than come; you will go thru sorrow rather than come; you will do anything rather than come the last lap of the race of seemingly unspeakable foolishness and say, "Just as I am, I come." As long as you have even the least bit of Spiritual disrespect, it will always reveal itself in the fact that you are expecting God to tell you to do something very big, and yet all He is telling you to do is "Come...."

"Come to Me..." When you hear those words, you will know that something must happen to you before you can come. The Holy Spirit will show you what you have to do, and it will involve anything that will uproot whatever is preventing you from getting thru to Jesus. And you will never get any further until you are willing to do that very thing. The Holy Spirit will search out that one immovable stronghold within you, but He cannot budge it unless you are willing to let Him do so.

Think about this for a second, how often have you come to God with your requests and gone away thinking, "I've really received what I wanted this time!" And yet you go away with nothing, while all the time God stood with His hands outstretched not only to take you but also for you to take Him. Just think of the invincible, unconquerable, and untiring patience of a Jesus who never sleeps who lovingly says, "Come to me...."

The measure of worth of our public activity for God is the private profound communion we have with Him....We have to pitch our tents where we shall always have quiet times with God, however noisy our times with the world may be.

God's Purpose:

God desires that we experience an abundant life. This would include such things as love, peace, purpose, and fulfillment. He also desires that we experience both abundant life now and eternal life with Him. (John 10:10; John 3:16).

Our Problem:

But we have a problem. God did not create us to act like robots who would automatically love and have fellowship with Him in return. He gave us a will and the freedom of choice. Therefore, not only do we have the ability to make good choices, but we also have the ability to make evil choices and sin.

Each of us will die physically, and after we die physically, we will face judgement. So we see that when we look at the condition of a person apart from God, it isn't very encouraging. We have all sinned one time or another, and the penalty of sin is eternal death (separation from God). Also we see that as a consequence of our sin we face God's judgement. Romans 3:23 (Sin); Romans 6:23 (Death); Hebrews 9:27 (Judgement).

God's Remedy:

In spite of the fact that we have turned our backs on God and have disobeyed Him, He has provided a remedy so that we can know Him personally. He wants to give us both abundant life and eternal life. Only one bridge can cross the gulf that exists between a person and God, and that bridge is Jesus Christ, thru His death on the Cross. God sacrificed His Son to pay the price for all of our sins. Jesus conquered death and is the way for anyone to come to God. (Ephesians 2:8-9, Not works); (Romans 5:8, Jesus Christ).

Our Response:

Christ has made it possible for us to cross over to God's side and experience the full life that He wants us to have. But we are not automatically on God's side. Real belief in Christ results in a response on our part. The instruction in (John 1:12) is that we must believe in Him and receive Him. Often this is expressed thru prayer and accompanied by a growing sense of God's love and forgiveness. Those who believe in Jesus will not be condemned and are assured of eternal life.

I am praying for you, and I care that you make it your life to be in the victory circle with God and those who follow suit, becoming His Saints and Disciples. May God bless you richly sista! My name is Dan and it is a pleasure to meet you, and pray for you.

The struggles of existentialists! The search for meaning and purpose. You'll be surprised how many people are actually struggling with it, but still live day to day without confronting the nagging questions. My friends here have given you great points. The only thing I'll add is, try it for yourself and see the difference :) It's a win-win situation.

@ sharkwhales. Thank you so much! I am glad it is natural to think about meaning and purpose, and your reply is very comforting to read. I hope that one day I will be able to say that my purpose in life is as clear as you describe it here!

The quote is also very beautiful, the thought that something in us goes on forever is very comforting, the thought that I have purpose outside of this life is strange but interesting

Thank you for taking the time to reply!

Thank you so much for taking the time to reply! It makes me very happy that the Bible has such a big description of the meaning of life and what comes after, it gives me hope that if ever I find faithfullness I will have a true purpose instead of simply living my life with no idea of what use it has.

I agree that a Bible teacher might help me on my discovery, for now you all are helping me along the way too!

Thank you so very much for taking the time to reply so well! :) It's great that you helped me with every question that I posted!

It gives me a lot of comfort reading that our souls can live forever, it would give a great deal of purpose and hope to life.

I understand that everyone starts with their journey to God somewhere, but it is quite a threshold to cross, speaking to God if I am not yet sure if I am faithful. Yet if I do not try, I will never know.

How amazing it is that God helps you through daily struggles!

I am very glad I am not the only one experiencing these feelings of doubt and fear, it makes me feel normal ;)

Your reply was very helpful, thank you so much! <3

Thank you for your clear description of my questions, that is very helpful!

What confuses me a bit, you speak of allowing the Holy Spirit to show you how you can follow Jesus (if I understood you correctly ;) ), but how does one go about doing this? How does one allow the Holy Spirit to guide them?

Well, I always avoided the question, perhaps I was too young to truly care, but allowing myself to doubt has opened my eyes to new things but it has also given me a lot of fear of the unknown.

But I agree there is no harm in trying :)

The answers are different for believers and non-believers.Lets get attention what Bible say on this way, The first answer for Christians the next,"As He is,so are we in this World", Let's take a look on next verse about it, KJV.1John4;17 .Herein is our love made perfect, that we may have boldness in the day of judgment; because as He is, so are we in this World.; Second answer for non-believers the next, "not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance",The next verse says about that.KJV.2Peter3;9, The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to usward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.

Even if you have just a little faith, God can use that (Matt 17:20). He'll meet you where you are and He'll give you a measure of faith (Rom 12:3). I see that you do have some faith in God, just look at how you're searching. :D

How amazing it is that God helps you through daily struggles!

I am very glad I am not the only one experiencing these feelings of doubt and fear, it makes me feel normal ;)

Your reply was very helpful, thank you so much! <3
