Actually it's not that black and white. Some parts of the OT were meant for specific groups of people at that time. Other parts do still stand. It takes some studying to learn the distinctions.

Matthew 5:17
"Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them.

The moral laws of the Old Testament remain for all Christians. But the civic and cultural laws are no longer necessary. They were applicable for a certain people group (the Jewish people) during a certain period in history (the time leading up to the New Covenant).

The old testament is a mirror of the new testament. It shows how people behave when faced with
God and given rules and structure to live by.

It shows our weaknesses, Gods love and judgement, and also how to find Him.
The new testament is the story of the Holy Spirit dwelling with believers and how this intimacy
works out, or not as the case maybe.

Imagine the old testament as a building with Christ at the head.
It is now how we put this into action with our walk in Jesus.

Both are important.

Reading the NT only would be like watching a movie half way through.
You wouldn't understand the plot, the whys and wherefores, the twists and turns
or how the ending came about properly.

Reading the OT only and you won't get to the happy ever after.

Now here is something many people don't get. The story still has not finished,
it won't finish until the day you go to be with the Lord. Then the full story line will
be fully revealed. Doesn't that just blow your mind.

Each of us has the Old Testsment, the New Testament and our own personal Testimony.
Thats because God is not dead He is very much alive.

1 Corinthians 13:12-13 NLT
[12] Now we see things imperfectly, like puzzling reflections in a mirror, but then
we will see everything with perfect clarity. All that I know now is partial and incomplete,
but then I will know everything completely, just as God now knows me completely.
[13] Three things will last forever-faith, hope, and love-and the greatest of these is love.
