I'm fairly sure you can join the military, and not kill. (Maybe that is no longer allowed.)

Nope I believe you can still do the no kill thing due to religious reasons. I forget what it is called. But think long and hard about your choice. People. Get. Harassment. Big. Time for people who go that route
Pray hard about your choice. However I do not think God will hold you responsible if you had no choice

I have to say that if you do ANYTHING you are convinced is against the way God wants you to live... FOR YOU, "Yes" it is falling short of being what you understand you should be.

Can anyone give me one of the definitions of "sin?" (It is to miss the mark you strive for.)

The purpose of the military is to defend our country. This is accomplished by breaking things and killing people. It is an honorable profession. There is no sin in protecting those you love.

Our Heavenly Father teaches us through His word to make war on our enemies and our fingers to fight. Becoming a Christian doesn't mean that it is time to give up and quit, but to prepare for battle, and the preparation is given in Ephesians 6:10-20: It is the putting on the entire armor of God and making yourself ready to do spiritual battle with the enemy. First, you learn God's plan, which is His Word, and then learn to serve Him as He instructs us to serve Him.

Psalms 144:1 Blessed be the Lord my strength, Which teacheth my hands to war, And my fingers to fight:

Please read the rest of Psalms 144, which many military folks often call “the solder's prayer”.
The hourglass of time has been tipped, and it’s later than you may think.

Hey McRez, We've got plenty of examples of God telling His people to go to war. Killing is heartbreaking, it is awful in ways that I can only imagine, but God forbids MURDER, not killing. Murder is when you hate someone and kill them, war is not murder because God has told people to go to war and he has told them NOT to murder. However, as Willie said, if you are not convinced in your mind about it, it may be sinful for you to kill in war.
Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning.

...or a better way of life.

Take the freedoms we have in the USA compared to living under ISIS.

Wow, good question. Are you asking for yourself or someone else? If you are looking for employment you should make this known before you sign the paper. The reason I say this is there is no place that guarantees you will not have to make that choice. Your wanting work or collage after a dishonorable discharge does not look good. The best place that answers the questions would be your local recruiter. I say local because some may offer where others do not.

I hope you do not mind my saying that there is no way you will go through life without sin. Carefully consider this about your own life.

    Ecclesiastes 3

" There is a time for everything,
and a season for every activity under the heavens:
2 a time to be born and a time to die,
a time to plant and a time to uproot,
3 a time to kill and a time to heal,
a time to tear down and a time to build..."

I don't even want to try to imagine what this world would be like if there were not people out there protecting our country.

From reading the bible is seems impossible for it to be a sin. The people of God were at war most of the time
However, if it feels wrong to you, it IS wrong to you.

If you don't want to risk having to kill someone, and that is a genuine reason for not wanting t join the fighting forces, I think you can state that and be put in some other part of the military (though I obviously don't know the US rules for that)

    People seem to misunderstand.

Murder is out of hatred. As long as you don't know the person you are killing, and you are forced to do it for the greater good, God will understand. Kill doesn't automatically mean murder, and deaths in war can be necessary to protect your country and to stop more people from being killed. It's not your fault.

Actually killing for your country sounds pretty wordly and satanic disobey God's law to protect to protect your country you should do as jesus does and turn the other cheek it's better to die and save your soul than to protect your country and lose it.

I´m pretty shocked by some answers here. Any form of taking anyone´s life is a sin, how could people ever doubt that? If in doubt about if something is a sin or not think about the fruits your action will bear. God created everyone, would you taking the a life please God or make Him upset?

This forum reminded me of the movie, Hacksaw Ridge. Excellent movie, based on a true story.

I'm a little surprised by some of the answers here.

To the OP, if you feel it goes against your consciounce then don't join the military unless
you find peace on this matter.

To a few others, unfortunately killing sometimes cannot be avoided, for example during
world war 1 and 2, if people refused to fight Germany, then Europe would be a communist/nazi regime
and there would be no Jews left at all. I think that there are times when good is called to overcome
evil via the method of war, unfortunately that involves killing. It's also biblical look at all
the times God called His people to utterly destroy the enemy in the OT.

Then there is the issue of police killing an armed gunman. What should they do, stand back
and let these people continue firing into crowds of people. Police are law enforcers and protecters
of a country. The military are law enforcers and protectors of borders and also on an
    international scale.

I think the difficulty is that as part of any protective organisation, you may be called to
fight for something that you feel is wrong. I don't know the answer to that one whether
at that point you might have to reconsider your military career. I don't think joining the
military should automatically mean you leave all decisions up to the commanders and
obey without question. So for example if soldiers are told to bomb a village of civilians,
questions need to be asked. There are many who have found themselves convicted
of war crimes because they didn't question and went along with the crowd.
Joining the military does not negate responsibility and accountability.

I think for a Christian they need to take this to God and find if it is right for them and also
keep God close during their military career. It could in fact be argued that the world would
be a better and more just place if more born again Christians were in the military, especially
if they find themselves in the high up decision making roles.

ps I don't know about other country's, but the military in the U.K. are also used in peace
    keeping roles.
