Default Are Smartphones Destroying a Generation?

hey all! i just recently i read an article talking about how smartphones could be effecting the world's youth today. honestly, i do not own a smartphone. yeah, go ahead and laugh. but serioulsy, my parents wont let me adopt an iPhone until i reach the age where i start working and eventually learn to drive. ive been seeing so many peers really drawn to their phones as if its their own body part. whenever the phone s taken away they get very emotional knowing that they have "disconnected" from the so-called social world. i feel the youth have become slaves to their gadgets and its robbing their thinking capabilities. are smartphones really had an impact on our lives for the bad? yes, they are alot of advantages but there are sill heavy side-effects on what the smartphone is realy doing to the teenagers and young adults. statistics show there is an increased rate of depression in girls because of the expectations on social media which they participate in on their phones.

any thoughts abot this? do you guys agree that smartphones has done some damage to this generation?

I don't know about destroying a generation, but it is depressing to me to see so many people glued to their phone literally all the time. It is an addiction. It's like people can't function without having their phone. I miss the days before smartphones came along and it wasn't like this.

Maybe I'm just becoming an old man that's scared of an increasingly technology-based world. Yeah, that's probably it.

it depends how we use it
maybe for young adults is not too necessary to use it
because many things will happen if we too much using smartphone
i also see many parents who have given their children a smartphone at a younger age
and they are fine so yeah it depends
and i agree it has bad side-effects
in your case maybe your parents just doing their best to take good care of you
i also won't give my child her own smartphone
until i see she could use it wisely and at least 18 maybe

I'm sure you've heard the phrases "digital heroin" or "electronic cocaine." Well, those have some truth. Research shows that screens (computer, smartphone, TV, video games, you name it), affect the brain the same way cocaine does. And we wonder why the youth today are glued to their phones?? I do not have a smart phone, even though I am of the age where my parents would let me buy it. The fact is...I'm a bit scared of it! I have really struggled with screen addictions in the past, and I am disturbed what would happen if I had that little screen with me 24/7.

I see this not only with teens. The one that actually saddens me the most is young parents. Noticed that one? They're with their kids. But are they really? They're distracted by their phones. Even taking pictures. Sure, you want those pictures, but wouldn't you also prefer some memories of actually interacting with your child?

Personally, I hate what the smartphone has done to society.

The internet in general is awful. The internet is 90% nasty smutty porn, 1% old school smutty porn, 7% other commerce, 2% legit communication. And it can all be found on a super computer that fits in your pocket.

oh wow Tinuviel… i so agree. i dont blame you for being scared of owning one. quite frankly, i dont know how i'll be able to put up with a smartphone when i do get one.
i have totally seen parents with little babies just texting or fiddling with their screens as their taking their child/children to the park. how can they grant that child of theirs safety when their concentration is far away??? it bothers me big time. i've heard of stories of kidnappings due to the parents not paying attention to the child at all. because what? they were glued on their phone.

What led to the destruction of generations in the US was the removing God and prayer from schools.

I'm glad this subject was brought up. For a long time I've believed...or rather, I KNOW that smartphones, video games and the internet have been ruining a generation...

Smartphones and text messages are almost completely void of human emotion (except for emoticons). People no longer start small talk with strangers or make friendly comments or even smile at someone or say hello. (Unless its Hawaii... they still smile and say aloha to strangers there!) Video games and the internet are just as bad at letting people avoid human interaction, if not worse.

I believe this lack of human interaction is why there is a lack of compassion, common decency and respect these days. A lot of people now seem to act like they would online.... impolite, arrogant, inconsiderate, selfish, not caring what anyone else thinks, vulgar, conceited, etc...

    Mirror Neurons
Did you guys know that we have these things in our brains called mirror neurons? They constantly monitor the facial expressions of people we meet and people around us, and when we don't see people accepting of us, or smiling at us or laughing with us, or if we see people ignoring us or looking at us in a strange way, it causes feelings of hurt and depression. this might be why people who don't have an active social life die sooner. Our brains actually need positive face-to-face interaction.

I imagine we can get our positive face-to-face interactions artificially through images or videos on the internet or on tv, but in the end it's human interaction that keeps us all from becoming soul-less, uncaring beings.

My parents did not allow me to have a phone until i was 15 and throughout those years, i've seen many friends who are addicted to their phones. we were not allowed to bring phones to school and it looked that they suffered a lot from being away from their phone. when i finally got my phone, i was so happy that it became my distraction from the real world. i did not study as much as i had done before, and i became so unproductive until my mom decided to seize my phone for weeks.

that's when i realise that smartphones do more harms then benefits. but if we can use it wisely (which is what most people can't do), then why not?

At the end of the day the smartphone - like the telephone, radio, TV or computer - is a tool. Like any tool it can be used for good or evil, and it can make it easier to do good or evil.

Have people changed as a result of smartphones? Nope. People are still people. Some people are focused, some people are wise, and some people look for escapes from their lives. For those who want to escape their lives, smartphones make it easier. If they didn't have smartphones they would be on the phone all day gossiping, or they would take up drinking, or... they would find some way to escape.

We can blame social disintegration on a tool if we want, but it's the people using the tool who are at fault. And people have always been people, and will always be people (for good or for ill) and some people will always try to escape their reality by any available means.

Studied have shown (regardless of age) the very act of having a phone near you reduced your ability to concentrate and learn. Even if you have it in a bag at your feet, the proximity of it distracts your mind. Leaving it across the room or in another room makes a drastic difference on one's ability to learn and focus.
Not to mention the increasing number of videos showing people walking into signs, other people tripping over curbs, etc etc... while using their phones.
One study even brought out a juggling clown on a unicycle to pedal by people walking while using their phone and most had zero clue he was near them.
Phones are not bad, simply misused. But so is food. Exercise. Sleep. Even the bible. The key is knowing how to use it properly.

One thing to note , certain individuals cannot memorize things nor have a discussion , without there smartphone involve in this generation. It truly is a very saddenly thing to witness.

    Very good reminder...

1 John 2:6 He that saith he abideth in him ought himself also so to walk, even as he walked.

    &

Psalm 37:30 The mouth of the righteous speaketh wisdom, and his tongue talketh of judgment.

The carnal mind hates truth & judgement, and leans unto its own understanding. The mind of the spirit, loves truth and being decreased in the carnal, is to be increased in Christ.
