Hey =D Today I was listenin to Tenacious D's "Tribute," because I thought it was one of their clean songs (didn't realize it said the F word 3 times at the end until I saw the lyrics today), and I thought it was just a catchy, funny song. The message of the song is basically this-

"We were talking along the road. A demon popped up and said "play the best song in the world or I'll eat your soul." Ma bro and I look at each other, say "OK" and play the first thing that comes to our heads, and it was the greatest song in the world. The demon was stunned and is like "Are you angels?!?!" and we're like "No, we are but men." THIS isn't the greatest song in the world, this is just a tribute to that song. Ya gotta believe us."

It's really funny, and I love the jibberish part in the middle XD The only problem is that at the end of the jibberish, it says "Mama Lucifer" in the background =/

But yeah, assuming I could find a censored version, I'd still love to listen to it. However, my mom says that she still thinks it's satan's music, and that I shouldn't love this music either. She says she doesn't have a problem with the message of the song, but "She's searching the Spirit of God in her and something about this song doesn't feel right." Is that really a credible reason to stop listening to songs like this (once again, assuming I censor the 3-4 bad words and phrases) once I move out of the house?

=/

NOTE: Also, I wouldn't use this as an excuse to listen to this dude's other songs. "The Metal" is on guitar hero, which I play (and am really good at), and it's another clean, funny, almost nonsensical song from what I can tell. But I've heard some of his other stuff and had to close it like 30 seconds in, it's just horrible. I'm talking specifically about this particular song ~_o

So the song is singing about Satan, has cussing, and you still want to listen to it?

The message of the song itself seems iffy to me. A demon is making demands to humans, and the humans comply? What kind of lesson is that teaching you? That is telling you that a demon has more power than you. By listening to music like that, you are ministering messages of weakness and defeat to your soul. A demon cannot steal your soul. You have Jesus living in your heart, and Jesus has victory over any demon here on earth or in the spiritual realm.

We are told that "death and life are in the power of the tongue" so we should take every word written, spoken, or sung seriously. When you listen to a song like that, you should be thinking "This isn't Biblical at all, and it is not something I should be singing along with."

For example, for a while I really liked the song Trouble is a Friend by Lenka, until my sister's friend was listening to it (because it's a rather catchy tune) and God revealed to her spirit that Trouble is a Friend is not a song we should be singing, because Trouble should not be our friend. One of the lyrics reads "don't be alarmed if he takes you by the arm..." This song is sneakily trying to get people to be okay with trouble, telling us to not be alarmed when trouble takes us by the arm (figuratively) and telling us trouble is our friend. Yes, I realize the lyrics are wrong now, but that does not mean I can now continue singing the song. Those words speak death to the Spirit living in me.

Likewise, lyrics about a demon stealing your soul if you don't do as he says speak death to the Spirit living in you.

^^I don't SING the song. The main story part of it is the "talk-along" thing that some country songs have or something XD The only part I really like listening to is the... I'm not sure if it' the chorus or what, but in one part it goes "Ahhhhhhh, Ahhhhhh, ah-ah-ah-ah-ah-aaaaaah. Ahhh-ah-ah-aaaaaah... aahh-ah-ah-aaaaaah. Ah-ah-ah-ah-ah." (And to avoid confusion, it's not a sexual "ahhh" in any way XD). Then the next time it does it, it's gibberish "'Ti Tuga digga tu Gi Friba fligugibu Uh Fligugigbu Uh Di Ei Friba Du Gi Fligu fligugigugi Flilibili Ah Fligu wene mamamana Sacrebleu!" but is followed immediately by "LUCIFER."

As for the message itself, it really reminds me of The Devil Went Down to Georgia in concept. Demon pops up, challenges you, they battle the demon, they win. I KNOW that Jesus is in control of our souls and they aren't in any form of danger, and this song really doesn't challenge that. If anything, it's told from the view of a non-Christian, so their souls really ARE in jeopardy of becoming enslaved to a demonic lifestyle.

Meh, if worse comes to worse I'll try to get the main parts of the song (which are obviously not bad in any way by themselves) and get it as a ringtone or something lol.

The song, overall, is not something I think Christians should be listening to. Taking the bad parts from the song doesn't magically make the song okay.

"I have 9 grams of sugar and 1 gram of cyanide. Taking away the 1 gram of cyanide doesn't make the sugar safe to eat!!#@!"

If you have the two separate, you can take away the gram of cyanide and the sugar will be fine. If the two have been mixed, how do you propose taking away the cyanide?

Once a song with a questionable message has been written, you cannot simply remove one part to try and make it good. It's the spirit of the song that is bad, so even if you take away a little piece, the spirit still lingers.

If they're mixed? Easy- Go examine each grain and remove the grains of cyanide.

Ok.... the "Sing me the best song in the world or I'll eat your souls" line. I honestly don't see a problem with it, as it's just a "storytelling" thing. Would be bad for a little kid to hear and learn it, but for a more mature mind, it's acceptable.

As far as the language, easily editable with sound software. It can be removed completely with no detriment to the song.

So like when you posted this thread were you looking for confirmation that what you are doing is okay, or were you actual looking for honest opinions?

Honest opinions are what I expect, but don't expect me not to fight them XD

I'm weird like that. Anybody who's been around enough to recognize my name usually knows I argue a lot, And then if I switch your view, I'm likely to argue your original point lol. Not in this particular case, because I'm pretty sure it's OK. If someone believes otherwise, though, I'd wanna know why, and it MAY change my mind. Unlikely, but it's possible ^_^

Sorry Vidy, but I'm gonna have to agree with Lil-Rush on this one.
I used to be quite a Tenacious D fan, but when I changed my life changed. I'm not a fan of the evils in the world, or anything they have to offer.
When the bible says we are to forsake everything, I think it meant what it said. That doesn't mean sell everything and move(unless God tells you to), it means forsake your old ways of living.
Remember, we are not to conform to this world. I believe this has it's roots in music as well.

^^Like I said, I am NOT a Tenacious D fan. His music is generally horrible and full of bad language and evil themes and stuff. However, the only thing potentially wrong with this particular song (other than those 3 curse words toward the end) is that "It says a demon can eat your soul, so it implies demonic power over you." That's bull IMO, so the actual MESSAGE of the song is clean.

Also, what on earth do you mean "turn from my old ways" ? I mean, I' haven't changed AT ALL in the past 4-5 years tbh, and this song was one I found just a year or two ago. I thought it was great and funny, until just recently when I actually looked at the lyrics and saw the F word a few times at the end XD. I see nothing really wicked about it other than that, even though my mom does =/

And just because the PERSON who sings the song is pretty bad doesn't mean the SONG is bad. Sure, it's not exactly a Christian message, but it's not really demonic either. It's neutral, like Jingle Bells or something rofl.

tl'dr- Funny song minus cuss words, no bad message, why do you still insist it's wrong?
