hey, new here. I was wondering, how do most of you feel when you hear people say the bible is just an overrated novel or how do u respond when you're in a group chat or among your friends and your hear someone make a bad remark about the bible. And also, why do you think people become atheists?

I am not a teen, nor do I play one on TV. :)

That said, I'm kind of answering to bump this up again, so teens can answer, but I do remember the answer to the one about "it's an overrated novel." Answer: "Oh, yeah? Have you ever read it all the way through to see if it is?"

One of two things will happen using that one:
1. They will give up that excuse.
2. They'll read it just so they can say the same thing again.

Funny thing about the second choice, it's brought many atheists to the Lord.

I'm not sure that people become atheists but rather simply are atheist because they don't know about God. People become Christian. How would I feel if told that the bible is an over-rated novel. I would say that it's a "Good Book".

Welcome :)

People don't become atheists. They ARE atheists (or I would say agnostics), and they become Christian. Everyone is born in rebellion against God, it is a change of heart that makes anyone different. So, that is very helpful for me to remember when talking to them, because it keeps me humble and keeps my mind and heart focused on God.

Usually I feel pretty sick when I hear someone talking like that. It is horrifying, and most of the time they don't even hold that opinion themselves, they're just spitting back information they've heard.

I've always viewed silence as agreement. So personally, if it is the place and time to do it (not gonna interrupt someone or be obnoxious about it), I will always say something if something bad is said to me about the Bible. It doesn't have to be much. Remember that you're defending the Bible, not yourself. Sometimes a simple "I read the Bible, and I think it's true; do you want to know why?" Is cool. Be prepared for ridicule and rejection, because people don't want to hear it.

Look up different facts that prove the Bible's history. You'll never make someone else believe something unless you're firm in your own beliefs about it. READ YOUR BIBLE! So many young Christians forget this step. If you don't know the material, how do you expect to refute errors, and if you haven't been getting your spiritual nourishment from it, how do you expect to have the strength to do so?

Lastly, know that it is God who changes hearts, and not you. You'll never change someone's heart. You won't even change their mind, most of the time! So as soon as possible, get on your knees and pray for that person and the seeds that you planted. God has promised that his word will never go out and come back empty.

Actually, I think people do become atheists. Two brothers became atheist after Mom died. Their excuse was "if God would let her die, there is no God."

Stephen Hawkings became an atheist when he got ALS.

I think it's bitterness.

depleted got what i was trying to say about becoming atheists, i remember when my aunt was in labour and she was loosing blood. i told God that all my faith is counting on her being alive and if she dies i would give up on him... she died eventually but the baby survived, if i was a person that goes through with all of her words (thank God m not), i would have become an atheist now. i figured that most times as depleted said, it's bitterness and pain and the fact that God said he is loving and he answers prayers and hears the cry of his children and answers them that makes people heart broken.

it feels like God isn't answering them so he isn't there and if he was, a lot of bad things wouldn't be happening.

The thing about this post is that I have prayed and asked God and he has answered. I've had a super natural vision.

So, I believe God answers some prayers and others he could say no... or maybe it's a prayer request that will eventually be answered later. Your last sentence " it feels like God isn't answering them so he isn't there and if he was, a lot of bad things wouldn't be happening." is a statement a lot of people have trouble with. Here's a short video that helps give answer:

All the answers are correct. Some are just not patient to wait on God so they convince themselves He doesn't exist. I do also believe most atheist are agnostic and just say they are atheist because it's the cool thing to do. They don't want to be labeled the bible reading, church going goody two shoes so they just deny. This I know for a fact is true for many of them.

Unlike others on here, I keep my faith to myself, as I'm already more or less a social outcast in my community. If anyone talks trash about the Bible in front of me without knowing my faith, they probably won't see a reaction, but deep down, I would be quite interested to know why they would say that.

As for why people become atheists, I would say that it boils down to numerous tragedies or incidents in their lives, or maybe because of how they were raised by their parents, who could also be atheists. Some could even consider Gods and souls to be logically false and unable to exist because they think that logic and science do not support the existence of these.

While not entirely true for all of them, I do remember a video I saw. A man whose name I can't remember was preaching to a high school students and he showed a clip of him talking to an atheist at some convention. After having a back and forth he asked the atheist "why do you always attack Christians more than any other religion". The guy responded "because they are our biggest threat."

You can always try this.

You are an athiest because you don’t believe in God.
You don’t believe in God but presumably believe in evolution.
You believe in evolution so presumably your great great great (reoccurring) was a monkey

And you think I’m nuts! :)

I think there are two kinds of atheists...

One simply requires scientific proof to believe anything at all...

The other is more hate-driven and goes around saying that you have to be stupid to believe there's a god...

A true atheist knows two things.

There is no God and he hates Him.

An atheist can be won with love and compassion. An atheist cannot be won with one liners and zingers intended to make them look stupid.

There are no natural atheists they must be taught. Usually comes from an educator, so called, that they respect or they may have been raised by unbelieving parents to believe there is no God.

We are all made in the image of God. Atheists seek logical explanations so give them to them.

Cosmological arguments, teleological arguments, or anthropological arguments can be made to give evidence to the atheist of Gods presence in the universe. Let God do the convincing.

When I first joined Christian Chat several years ago there was a group of Atheists on the site and I found it a little odd for them to be hanging out here, but after visiting the BDF and getting torn apart by some of the Christians I retreated to the Atheist section as they were a tad more accepting and friendly towards me.

I really questioned them about their lack of belief in a God and learned quite a bit from them. One by one they got banned until I'm not sure we even have any on the site now.

Seems like the higher the education that somehow God isn't needed anymore and I'm not sure it is taught or not but that man doesn't need God but rather rely on themselves. Evolution being taught also offering a different version of where we/man came from.

I not saying Christians are a stupid lot that must believe in God to survive, it just seems among my friends and family that the higher the education level they don't feel the need of God so much anymore.

It is also sad that because the Bible isn't shared within a family unit when children are small that they never get the sense of a loving God and in this world we are so good at blaming God anytime anything goes wrong instead of seeing Him as a caring Father who is wanting to protect us from all pain and suffering that this world has to offer.

After time I was able to make many Christian friends on this site and I appreciate all of them but to say that Atheists hate God is a little strong as it's hard to hate someone that you don't believe in to start with. Most of them don't believe in a devil either.

They are just people that haven't been introduced to a personal relationship with God yet. They need our prayers and love to help introduce them to the loving God that we believe in.

I truly believe that some atheist were once followers of Christ. I say this because daily they make videos and post about how God isn't real. They spend much of their time trying to discredit or get others to believe that he doesn't exist. Why waste all of that for someone you apparently do not care about? And, a lot of atheist may say "If there is a God, then why does he allow suffering, violence, corruption"? The answer for that is sin and the devil. The greatest weapon the devil can ever use is to convince people that he doesn't exist. People will fed into that lie and it births out atheist, agnostics and haters of God. Now, to answer your other question I become a little upset when people describe the bible as just a novel. How would I respond? I wouldn't. I'd say Jesus loves you and keep it moving. Most of the times, people want to challenge you through your beliefs. Do not give them the satisfaction.

Atheists might be basically blind, deaf, and dumb.. And they live unto themselves? And some are being led to Christ, being unbelieving the whole way... and some atheists are not being led to Christ, no? They give into temptation a lot, if they're even tempted. And maybe... In their being led to Jesus, they either get deeper and deeper in the hole.. Or it's the other way, and the closer to Jesus they come the more out of the hole they come. What's your opinion on Atheists? Either way, all will stand before Him... And He will tell the Atheists, perhaps, "I never knew you." And, maybe, they just haven't really heard about Jesus... Or it's a kind of heart they have, a heart that maybe Satan treats like his wicked garden... What atheists hear about Jesus gets removed from their heart by Satan like a weed... But, from Satan's standpoint, maybe he likes weeds and hates plants. So, it takes a certain kind of heart to believe. If a man or woman doesn't have that kind of heart... How will he or she get a heart that will believe?

They do it to make money. Those debates? They get paid for them. The same goes for the books.

Some atheists were once religious; some were always atheists who had atheist parents.

Some ARE angry. Some just dont believe. Period

An atheist doesn't believe in any gods. An agnostic doesn't know if any gods exist or not. They are completely two different things.

I knew someone who was a Christian that turned atheist.... I believe they turned atheist because they thought that they could be more intellectual than God.... sometimes that happens to even the most faithful... the enemy is clever at manipulating people, which is why it’s important to be in tune with the Holy Spirit in discerning what is of God and what isn’t. Even Satan tried to tempt Jesus and promise him the world! But blessed are we to have a loving and merciful God! How? See JOHN 3:16 :)
