I am aways telling myself ''read the bible'' however I find when I read it I don't take much in, so should I just repeatedly read it again, and again and then study each chapter and the message? I am not sure :/ Please help me :)

I personally study it the way I learned to study when I was in school. I do a lot of background work to make sure I know the right context and where it fits historically. Then I start to look at the actual text, taking in a bit at a time, writing lots of notes. After a section, I pause to reflect on it and give the information time to digest. Once I'm satisfied that I get it, I move on to the next piece.

How long it takes you to get through one thing or another- who can say? Take however long you need to be sure you understand it. Don't be afraid of getting sidetracked on a particular subject that comes up or an interesting cross reference. The Bible is heavy duty stuff. People learn differently and study differently, so it's really just finding what works for you. Hopefully you are good at school and already know how to learn and study!

best way to read your bible is with an open heart, and the right mindset, if your reading it just because it's became a religious activity, then that's not the right heart, God wants you to read it because you want to, not because you have to. ^^ I always pray before and after. and listen for God to speak twice as long as you have prayed. as my old youth pastor said "prayer and bible devotion is about having a conversation with God. after all, the bible IS God's word" Go will reveal to you what his meanings are :) and theres verse that you'll read 100 x's and not get the meaning of it till the 101'st time.

The Bible is God's Word to humankind and it is very important that we read it. A good reading/study plan is critical. Prayer should be involved because as was stated in one of the post, its (The Word of God) aim is heart transformation. Having the desire to read is going in the right track , so keep it up talk to your pastor, or some of your christian friends, see how they go about it. But above all, keep reading and praying.

Before you start reading the bible, pray that God may help you understand what you read. And it is not about how much read but how much you get. So get your bible and from every verse think about how it applies to you. Many people will tell you to start with the new testament, and I would agree with them. I hope it helps, God bless

Maybe read the books that you feel are easier for you to understand, that way you will get into the habit of reading. I remember I started reading the gospels first, then romans, and well every other book in the NT. Psalms and proverbs are always good to read and you don't need so much knowledge to understand them. Slowly go to the books that you consider more hard to understand for you, personally I started reading Genesis so I could understand the background of the other books, but that's not rule. Don't feel pressure to move fast into the next book, be patient with yourself.
If you can attend a bible study with a friend, or with someone in your church that would be great also :) Pray and do what more fits you through God's guidance :) Remember that the Bible is intended for everyone so if you want to understand, God will make it possible. God bless!

sometimes even a NIV or NLT or ESV bible helps us understand more.

I've always enjoyed cross referencing multiple versions. You can do that on your own using the internet, but going to a Bible study where people use different versions can really enhance your study.

I prefer the NASB, personally, but my pastor uses NIV, his wife uses HCSB and others use KJV.

Between the 10 or so of us in the class, we're able to work through anything! lol It's also nice to draw on the wisdom and education of others. Some of them have been Christians for like 60 years, so they always lend a great spiritual perspective. Others have a more academic lean on things so they know historical context and other bits of information that really bring what we're reading to life. We're all able to learn from each other and even the older folks say they get a lot out of our studies.

GO TO CHURCH! lol

Pray the Lord will teach you BEFORE you read ANYTHING.

Ask him to keep you from the wrong things, and teach you the truth about what you read. Don't count on your own understanding. Be honest about it, and when you get the answer, don't try to ignore it, even if you don't like it.

I guess you could start, ''IN THE BEGINNING?'' lol.

May Jesus bless you.

p.s. I used to write down my questions, but not the answers. I did write guesses to the answers with a ''?''. Many I would not find out until months later. And I am still learning about him more and more. :)

I like to just let my bible fall open and read whatever pages come, but everyone's different :). Definitely ask God to fill you with the Holy Spirit, because He will lead you into all truth. If I come across something I don't understand, I ask Him to reveal the meaning to me, and sometimes I discuss it with other Christians that I know are seeking God's best for their lives. Don't just decide for yourself what the words mean, ask the One who wrote the book! May He bless your studies and guide your life :) -Nichole

The way I read my bible hinges on the relationship I enjoy with my God. Without that I fear much of a message in The Book might be lost. But I always read in a small chapel (seating only 15), specifically set aside for prayer, thought & contemplation, within the Abbey near our home.
A message or understanding may be contained within a chapter, an entire book or even a mere verse. I may not "get it" until later in the day or when I'm at work or even after having prayed at night - But I always understand the message sooner or later.
Hope I make sense!
