I've always grew up believing that you must first be baptised in order to go to heaven. But I've been hearing differently. Can anyone please tell me if you have to be baptised to go to heaven?

Me personally I think it is right to get baptized. I'm not really sure if you have to be or not to be to go to heaven.. It is the right thing to do though! :)

Different denominations disagree on whether is not it's the actual baptism that allows you to be saved. All would agree, though, that since Jesus said to be baptized, you are disobeying Him by not getting baptized.

It doesn't matter if you're "not ready" or anything; Jesus said to do it, so you need to do it.

I've heard it put this way: either we are king of our own lives or Jesus is King of our lives. If you put yourself on the throne, you can do whatever you want. But you're not part of God's kingdom; you're part of your own. But if Jesus is King, then you have to obey Him. If the king told you to do something, it's not a suggestion, you must obey the king. Well, if Jesus really is your King, then you have to obey Him and be baptized IMMEDIATELY. If you decide not to be baptized, well, maybe you have someone else on the throne in your life.

Baptisim of water is merly a symbolic demostration of your belif in christ that represents the old person dying an the new person being born it is a good thing to do but not required for salvation..... baptism by fire wich is being baptised with the holy spirit is for salvation....... if baptism by water was nececary that would mean someone who gave there life to christ an then died before they could find a tube an a preacher would go to hell an that just dosent go with a loving God.

I sometimes think of the thief on the cross who said to Jesus (along the lines of) 'remember me in your kingdom' and Jesus said to him that he will join Him in paradise. Grace saves, not works; then again, faith without works is dead. I personally feel baptism is not required for salvation... only believing in Jesus, repenting of sin and looking to Christ for salvation. I think baptism is something you should do to obey God, to commit yourself to Him, and show that Jesus has washed you clean, that now you are dead to sin and alive with Christ. But, I could be wrong.

Remember that man that was on the cross next to Jesus, and Jesus said he will see paradise (heaven), I don't think he got baptized when Jesus said that since he was on the cross lol...So no you don't need to, it's your faith.

What we all believe is irrelevant really, hey? It is what the word of God says and it is explained as a man dying to himself and being lifted up in Christ. Jesus in complete, there is nothing, no-one, no act required in order to be saved. He has done it all! We are obedient then only to His word, when he request that we do it.

1 Peter 3:21 NIVNew International Version
and this water symbolizes baptism that now saves you also--not the removal of dirt from the body but the pledge of a good conscience toward God. It saves you by the resurrection of Jesus Christ,

Also, keep in mind that there is no one in scripture from Acts onward who believed in Christ and wasn't baptized soon after. Yes, God can work in extraordinary ways (Baptism by Desire) and certainly those who lived before the Resurrection were saved (Like the Good Thief), but the ordinary method of this dispensation is through water baptism.

We are baptized as a public confession of faith. It is not required to go to heaven but it is strongly advised as a confession statement and an act of obedience.

It is the work of the Holy Spirit that saves us...not the water.

Water is what I think you are referring to and was John's Baptism, for repentance, for one to want to do what is right, to love as God loves.
And to this day no one can do as Christ did, nor ever will be able to do in and of their self ever.
Matthew 3:11 I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance, but He who is coming after me is mightier than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.

Now after Christ did what he came to earth to do which was to fulfill the law and Prophets, (john the Baptist being the witness) in order to bring in a new Covenant of Love, where by this new laws of love given to us through Christ by the Holy Spirit of God started on the day of Pentecost when God came to live in us, and do God's work through us, we only being the vessel for this to be.
Shown on the day of Pentecost and in Acts 10 with Peter preaching to the Gentiles and the Holy Spirit comes on them without water baptism, so it is the Holy Spirit Baptism of God from God that we are born again, our believing God is what accomplishes born again of the Spirit, where as Water Baptism is for one to try to achieve of their own works and is worldly not Spiritual.
For there is only:
Matthew 3:11 I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance, but He who is coming after me is mightier than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.

Today after the cross as John said the one that comes after him Baptizes with:
Acts 1:5 for John truly baptized with water, but you shall be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now.”

This day is today, we are and cannot see the kingdom without the Baptism of the Holy Ghost.
Now please do not get me wrong here, water Baptism is for a good conscious towards God, not toward our Church, not toward others to say hey look at me, rather it is between God and you.
What was it the Pharisees of that day of Christ, did kicked him out, Why? For one thing for sure Christ was not taught by them, they as man flesh does, wants control over others, and Christ gave them none.
Just a little milk and some meat for thought to eat

so this might be ourselves our flesh nature needs to die, maybe co-crucify with Christ at his death daily to be able to see the new life provided to us by God the Father through the resurrected Christ, maybe?

Maybe that is what the death and resurrection is all about, Christ died to the flesh even though he was perfect in the flesh, and so we are to die with Christ to our flesh in our finite minds and as Christ was resurrected we are to be resurrected as well, yet in the Spirit not the flesh?
Maybe this is why Christ said :
John 4:23 Yet a time is coming and has now come when the true worshipers will worship the Father in the Spirit and in truth, for they are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks.

John 4:24 God is spirit, and his worshipers must worship in the Spirit and in truth.”

[h=3]John 10:10[/h]New King James Version (NKJV)

[SUP]10 [/SUP]The thief does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy. I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly.

How does one get life that is more abundant? Does flesh do it, lots of money, being a star, having a nice home?
If this flesh life here was more abundant, then why did Janice Joplin Over dose. Why Was Howard Hughes unhappy. Those that have made it to the top of this world, after riches, fame and glory, have never once been 100% satisfied.
So again what is more abundant? Spirit of God or flesh of God that it seems many try to imitate and are miserable not being able to obtain. The only attainable solution is in the resurrected Christ in the Spirit of God, where one can be homeless and content at the same time.
That is what abundant living in God is!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! deep yep, so can anyone of us do this? Nope not a one, only God can through us, us knowing God has got a purpose in everything that goes wit us good or bad as it seems it a lot of the time seems to be, and we often times find out God had us covered the whole time, because God sees future and protects us from a much worse harm that would have happened
And is why I think to count all things a joy, as flesh Spirit tries to de-rail me and has many times as wellas many others here too
All in love to you all to the glory of God

to me baptism is like a marriage, a declaration to the world that i am no longer my own, bought at a price., by the blood of Jesus. And no i dont believe that water itself saves anyone, its Jesus that does that.

to me you can baptise your self everyday like a blessing, like time for giving thanks, like a daily renewing of the of the mind body and spirit

Our faith shouldn't be works based. I'm not baptized (yet) because I haven't found the right church yet, but I'm saved and that should suffice... for now.

In spirit, is the word of God. In truth, is worship knowing that He is the one and only true God.

Baptism comes after you've already repented of all your sins and have acknowledged that Jesus is the Son of God and you have totally committed your whole life to Jesus. Jesus wants that first step of faith and then after he has come into your heart and you have become a new creation in Christ Jesus... old things have passed away (lost the desire to sin, and not meaning you're never tempted) all things become new (you desire to totally live for Jesus), then you get baptized. The bible says it's an answer of a good concience before God... you are publicly telling the world that because of Jesus you are a changed person and totally sold out to him. You are saved and a christian before you are baptized, but you can be saved and baptized at the same time; John the baptist baptized people as they were getting saved. John preached, "Repent, for the Kingdom of Heaven (God's way of doing things) is at hand, and he also preached, bring forth fruits worthy of repentance (repent with a sincere broken heart over your sins), so, you can be baptized and saved at the same time, if you are repented as you are being baptized. Hope that helps you, Sweety. <3
