For all the depressed teens out there, it's best to get off the chemical-haze and get your head renewed with the Word of God. It's freely available by MP3 so there's no excuse to not listen to it as well; gaurenteed to work better than your anti-despressant. :)

MP3 Bible: The Bible in MP3 Audio Format - The King James Version of the Bible

Research said:
Dr. El-Mallakh et al. point out that individuals who were not initially depressed, but were given antidepressants for other problems (e.g. anxiety), often became significantly depressed.

“In a recent study 27% of patients without any history of a mood disorder who had received antidepressants for an average of 29 months for panic disorders, developed a cyclothymic illness that persisted for 1 year after antidepressant discontinuation.” [Emphasis added]
Also, and perhaps most alarmingly, it is stated:
“In…patients who have developed TDp [tardive dysphoria], ongoing attempts to treat the depression with antidepressants perpetuate the TRD, and may ultimately make the chronic depression permanent.”

All antidepressants on the market give the warning that the medication could increase suicidal thoughts... Suicidal thoughts are a sign that someone is in a deep depression, and the medication could be the cause if it is a new symptom. Suicidal thoughts are especially likely in the first months of taking the medication, and in children and young adults. Behavior and symptoms should be carefully monitored during the first months of treatment, or when a new medication is prescribed, to ensure that suicide or suicidal thoughts do not occur.
And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.
- Romans 12:2

And praying to God concerning your problems helps too!

I will therefore that men pray every where, lifting up holy hands, without wrath and doubting.
- I Timothy 2:8

Antidepressant can change intrinsic connectivity of brain | The Westside Story

In a new study it was found that even a single dose of antidepressant can affect our brain and is enough to produce dramatic changes in the functionality of the human brain. Brain scans were taken before and after giving an acute dose of SSRI (serotonin reuptake inhibitor), and the drug showed its adverse effect within three hours.

“We were not expecting the SSRI to have such a prominent effect on such a short timescale or for the resulting signal to encompass the entire brain,” said Julia Sacher of the Max Planck Institute for Human Cognitive and Brain Sciences in Germany.

Lead researcher Julia Sacher conducted the study over 22 healthy people having no signs of depression. What they found was mind boggling. The drugs were believed to affect human brain over a long period of time. But the study revealed that drugs affect human brain instantly and changes the brain connectivity in important ways.

Participants were given a single dose of escitalopram. Researchers scanned their brains and took three-dimensional images of their brains and measured number of connections between structures called voxels. It was revealed that SSRI reduced the level of intrinsic connectivity in most part of brains but increased activity between cerebellum and thalamus was recorded...

While I do not agree with taking antidepressants either....depression is so complicated. You so badly want out of the hole, but you don't know how. And even when you do somehow find a way back out, it's only a short time before you're back in. You'd do anything to be relieved of it sometimes. The medications they offer, if you don't get it right, it could kill you because you're driven mad by them. I think for some it's the thorn in their side that lets them know God's grace is sufficient for them. Praying may help, but it doesn't fix it.

I don't really think there is a cure for depression. You just have to do what you can to eat right, get enough exercise, and pray that God doesn't let this swallow you whole.

I have a BS in psychology and chose not to pursue a degree in psychiatry because at that level you are mostly responsible for administration of medication in California. The real help comes from the establishment of a relationship with a good Christian psychologist. A good Christian psychologist will listen to what is happening in your life that is causing you negativity. Most people that are suffering from depression don't have anyone that will listen to them and help them find the root of their problem. Before you can solve a problem you must know what the problem is and what the cause is. Medication is a temporary solution to the symptoms caused by the underlying problem. Medications have huge negative side effects. Taking medication does not solve the initial problem at all. In just 3 days antidepressants (SSRI's) change the architecture of the brain even though you are told you won't feel a difference for weeks. Medications can turn you into a real life zombie. We must be very careful when we take medicine and those who do take SSRI's need someone who really cares about them; not someone around them who is just happy you aren't an issue no more to them. I am a firm believer in prayer and I am a witness to how God answers prayers. When you go to see a counselor make sure that counselor is a Christian, ask to pray before your session starts. There is lots of money being made in prescribing medicine. Right now insurance companies and even the Veterans Administration have realized that most of the prescribed medicine to the clients are unnecessary and in most cases over prescribed. They are cutting back on the amount of prescribed medicine allowed as well as type of medicine. If a person is suffering from blockage in the vessel supplying blood to one of their legs, they will experience pain in their legs and cramps. There are procedure's to clear the blockage but in many cases medicine is prescribed to stop the pain and cramps. The blockage gets worst and breaks into pieces that move through the bloodstream. These pieces can cause a heart attack or brain aneurisms. Lots of money was made from the doctor visits, medications, blood tests to monitor any damage caused by the medications and each blood test will be proceeded by a doctor visit. Doing what is right in the first place is not as profitable. The initial blockage could have been found doing a dye in the blood test and possibly a angioplasty procedure. What happened to people as a priority and not how much profit can be made.

Going through a death in the family, and a break up - among other issues; does take time to heal. However I have found the Bible (Psalms and Proverbs especially) quite nice to listen to during hardship. Also praying to God to take the burden from you helps.

Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.
Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls.
For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.
- Matthew 11:28-30

We’re talking about psychotherapy. There are some---well, I hesitate even to say that, but there are some legitimate studies in psychology, industrial psychology, learning problems of children, and so forth. The problem with even saying that is that psychology is really based upon Darwin. It’s based upon the medical model of Freud so that man is not a spiritual being, he’s just a kind of stimulus response mechanism. In some ways that can be helpful, because we do learn things, we are influenced by experiences that we have had, but that’s not the only thing, and furthermore, that does not inhibit the Christian because we have Christ to turn to. So Tom, we just reiterate, you know, the way we are starting out. The Bible claims, 2 Peter chapter 1, Peter says: According as His divine power hath given us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, to the knowledge of Him who has called us unto glory and virtue, whereby given unto us exceeding great and precious promises, and so forth, that by these you might be partakers of the divine nature. So, the Christian is supposed to have a divine nature and the Scripture says that Christ is living, Christ is your life, Colossians chapter 3, when Christ who is your life. I don’t believe that Christ needs any help from psychology. So that, as you pointed out, that undermines the confidence, not only undermines the confidence, it destroys the confidence. What it says is, The Bible does not have the answers that we need. Now, of course doesn’t have the answers for repairing an automobile, tuning the engine and other things. No, and Tom, we’re talking about Christian psychology. Now, you wouldn’t think of saying, Well, how about Christian aerodynamics? Well, what about Christian auto mechanics? No, they are Christians who are auto mechanics or physicists or chemists, but no one would ever talk about a Christian chemistry or a Christian physics. Then why do they talk about a Christian psychology? That’s the problem that we are trying to get at here.

I've been dealing with depression much longer than I have been grieving. I have been battling depression for nearly 10 years now. I was 8 when my depression surfaced. No, nothing bad happened to me at that point in life. It just happened. There were times where the Lord would help lift me out, yes. No, I never went on antidepressants. We took the natural route. I still fight it, though.

Please find a Christian counselor or pastor. There is a reason for your depression and you need help to discover the reason. Then you will know what to look for when that trigger of depression confronts you, and how to not let it control you. Hopefully once you know why you get depressed you get rid of it permanently. You're in my prayers!

Thus saith the LORD; Cursed be the man that trusteth in man, and maketh flesh his arm, and whose heart departeth from the LORD. For he shall be like the heath in the desert, and shall not see when good cometh; but shall inhabit the parched places in the wilderness, in a salt land and not inhabited. Blessed is the man that trusteth in the LORD, and whose hope the LORD is. For he shall be as a tree planted by the waters, and that spreadeth out her roots by the river, and shall not see when heat cometh, but her leaf shall be green; and shall not be careful in the year of drought, neither shall cease from yielding fruit. - Jeremiah 17:5-8
