When one leaves one's house on a rainy day without one's umbrella, one ends up getting wet. There is an alternative to the consequences, it is when one ignores the alternative that life becomes less than it would otherwise be.

If you don't mind an analogy, the designers of a standard automobile designed it to operate within a specific environment, to consume a specific type of fuel, and to be operated in a specific manner. Operating a standard automobile under water, or putting water in the fuel tank, or forcing it to travel at the speed of sound are contrary to the plans of the designer and will result in damage to the automobile.

They are sins because they are contrary to God's plan and will result in damage even if that damage isn't immediately apparent.
