In general, there's nothing wrong with video games - just like movies, hobbies, or anything else of that kind.

The issue comes with the content of those games, movies, etc. Also, if you spend 16 hours of your day doing it I think it reveals a problem - not with the games, etc., - but with you.

I do not believe its a sin, but I do believe depending on the person it can cause issues sometimes, if you play ALOT. I dont play much, although I do like to try to sometimes and I love rock band, and Wii games. BUt my ex played video games ALL the time, there were times when i would sit htere and watch him play video games, I think theres a level and an age where you just cant sit at home and play video games constantly anymore, and this is where it becomes a negatie thing, when it effects other parts of you r life.

I agree playing video games in itself is not a sin. The amount of time spent doing so or the types of games played is where problems can arise.

That's like saying movies or books are bad. You have to be specific about which one- I agree that playing too many, just like watching tons of tv, can replace too much time in your life.

I believe there are games that have no harm, but I also believe there are many games with much harm. We have to be careful with what we put in our heads. Phil 4:8, Prov 18:21, 1 Cor 10:23, 31. I played games as long as I can remember, in kindergarten beating mario lol. It's not a matter of right or wrong I think, its more of a matter of what brings God the most glory? Is it glorifying to God to hear His name blasphemed over and over in this game? or unclean words glorified by the "hero" of the story? or watching lustful dressed characters? What brings God the most glory? A clean heart is what He desires, watching some of the things in video games should make us sick, for instance God's name being used in vain, He is our creator, our savior, and they are using His name as a curse word, I can't enjoy a game that does that, what does God think of this game? One last thing, how does your time with Him compare to your time with the games? What would your life look like, if you spent the time you play games on reading His word, praying, and worshiping our King. So over all I'm just saying, its not about right our wrong, but our desire should be to please God. I wanted games, but I wanted God more and I had to lay down myself and surrender even games to Him. Hope this helps, and when you lay down something for God, usually what you gain is so much more precious.

Asceticism is not the answer. It is the content of some of the games/movies/music/etc. as well as the addiction that some people have to it that's sinful.

In my opinion I believe it depends what kind of video games it is, what is the message that it is portraying? Is it an infatuation? Taking you away from God? Then if so I think it is a sin. But lately I've been playing Sonic for the Sega Genesis, not often but I don't think it has anything corrupt in it, whenever you hit a bad guy it turns into a bunny or a bird. No harm there, UNLESS it comes between you and God.

God was speaking to me the past few weeks, telling me to be obedient, to get my priorities straight, because I had let the computer and texting get in the way of God.

I feel anything that takes you away from your walk with God can become a sin if you don't get it under control.

But back to video games, there are sin in video games, just as there is in movies, and they can corrupt your minds, thinking sinful thoughts is a sin, so wouldn't be watching and practicing sinful acts on a video game be a sin? Even if it all fake?

+1 for using the word "asceticism" and for being exactly right.

Yes, it can be but some are not so obvious so you would need to know yourself quite well to tell the difference.

If you don't know it's sin then how can you classify it as sin?

That's where discernment comes into play. For example, if you feel guilty or convicted, then there's a good chance it's a sin. But you need to discern carefully. Sorry, there's no hard and fast rule to it and we all get it wrong from time to time. :( The best thing to do if you suspect that you've committed a sin is to pray and ask God for direction. Then listen very very carefully. On another note though, I'm not sure about this but probably if you genuinely don't know if something is a sin then you *probably(???)* won't be held "responsible" for it. But once you've been made aware that it might be a sin, then the onus is on you to find out if it is or not.

I don't think there is anything wrong with video games or movies i just think it all depends on what you play or what you watch, like if you're playing something that constantly takes the Lord's name in vain then yeah i would think there is evil there. But if it's clean then i believe there is nothing wrong with it, as long as you are putting God before the video game. Just don't let it control your life you control them.

I actually work at a video game store because I love video games. But I also know there are a good amount of them that hold questionable content; which is why I can't legally sell "rated mature" titles to children under 17 years old. Video games are now like inter-active movies, gone are the days of PONG when all you had to worry about was time-management.

You have to decide for yourself which game you allow yourself to play. Like movies, it's different for everyone (with a few exceptions).

Obviously if you feel convicted for something then you shouldn't be doing it then stop doing it and ask for forgiveness.

But the Bible does talk about " if you genuinely don't know if something is a sin then you *probably(???)* won't be held "responsible" for it." I'm not sure where the scripture is at the moment, but it's something I have talked to my pastor about.

Think about it in this concept. If someone goes to court because they've committed a crime, but they have some sort of mental illness and they don't see it as a crime, they're going to be judged accordingly.
God will do the same to us.

"For all have sinned, and come short to the glory of God" Romans 3:23

We cannot be perfect we will fail some time or another, no matter how hard we try, but we must move on. Once God has made it known that it is a sin then we must repent from it.

There's no regulation in God's Torah for abstaining from video games. So I believe this is one of those issues referred to by Paul when he says to not do it if it offends your conscience or anyone else's. Personally, I play some games and others I don't. Those I play sometimes have killing and violence in them and sometimes don't. But it doesn't ever offend me because I know I'm not killing anyone.

Video games in themselves are not any more sin than any other random passtime

however, if it takes up time you'd otherwise spend with God or your family, or it makes you do/ wnat to do "bad things" (i.e making you aggressive) then the results of playing the video game becomes sinful

I think games are evil in a few ways. They have contributed to our anti-social and individualistic society. They have contributed to physical problems like RSI and eye problems and obesity. Their content fills the mind with fantasy which makes it hard to determine the difference particularly for teens. They encourage addictive behaviour. In some ways playing a pokie machine is better because at least you may get some tangible reward if you hit the jackpot. I guess the average christian has wasted countless hours of their life playing games which could have been put to better use like serving God.
