So hello, just wanted to hear about people's thoughts and opinions on what it may be like having a spiritual director. I have made it a goal of mine this year to seek one out, so please feel free to share if you want. Thank you all in advance :)

What exactly do you mean by spiritual director?

I had to look it up. Sounds similar to a mentor concept, but something about it seems off.
For one thing it is not a Christian based idea, the site i looked up talks about this involving other religions as well. Looking through Google it seems most of the references are not Christian based.

I don't know a lot about it, but even the term 'spiritual director' sent up red flags for me. Personally, it is not something i would involved myself in. But, as i said, this is a cursory take on things. So i don't have a full understanding of it, though i have no desire to learn more either as i still have a funny feeling about it.

Mentors and such can be a good idea, to a degree, but caution needs to be used as we are not to follow the guidance of others, but of God. It is so easy to look to a person that we raise up in our minds. An ex of mine did this years ago. She became so reliant on her 'mentor' that she would go to this woman for guidance and direction in her life, not God.
Years later as we spoke about it she realized how damaging her reliance on this woman became to her, both at the time it took place, as well as the years to come.

Can you explain it to me, then? Because this sentence─

"Mentors and such can be a good idea, to a degree, but caution needs to be used as we are not to follow the guidance of others..."

─has me pretty befoozled.

sassy, I'm interested in your opinion of spiritual directors, first and foremost. :) What do you think of them?

To be mighty honest, I recently just heard of the term myself while I was at a Catholic Summer Camp. One of the religious people stated that it has to be someone you trust, their role is to guide you on your journey in your faith, sometimes we go through stressful events in life that leaves us lost and confused, a spiritual director would be someone who is able to sort of nudge us back on the right path, not necessarily tell us what should be the right path but more over help us discover it for ourselves. They are meant to help strengthen our relationship with God.

I thought I was the only one who hasn't heard of the term, so I don't feel so clueless now. But I do hope I've sort given you an idea on what it might mean :)

You quoted her post, but then my words. So are you asking her, or me?

"But do not be called Rabbi; for One is your Teacher, and you are all brothers.9 Do not call anyone on earth your father; for One is your Father, He who is in heaven. 10 Do not be called leaders; for One is your Leader, that is, Christ." Matt. 23

"...and they will hear My voice; and they will become one flock with one shepherd." John 10:16

So, what is the difference between "Director" and "teacher", "leader", "shepherd"?

With most, be prepared to get thoughts heavily influenced by the personal opinion of one person, I have done it in private locations, but not many people look for one
