I don't believe that the gift of tongues is a heavenly prayer language. I have many pentecostal friends and mentors whom I love and respect, but I feel fallacious when we're worshipping and I hear them speaking in tongues. I recently visited a pentecostal bible college and I have a few very close friends that attend. The college is very missions based which I love. I want to give my life to the Lord and get connected so that I can receive whatever training necessary. I pray for wisdom and discernment.

They WILL teach about the gifts, all of them. If you don't believe in the gifts, why would you expose yourself to teachings you don't believe in? Unless of course you are open to changing your mind about them.

Be very careful. False teachings and beliefs are not limited to a single bible college or seminary. Many are churning out pastors who believe in biblical relative truth instead of the absolute truth of God's word.

When it comes to the charismata or gifts of the Holy Spirit, they will be given exactly as the Bible says they will. One does not have to be a "charismatic" to believe in the gifts of the Holy Spirit. When it comes to tongues, find out what God says about them. Study what His scriptures say, not man. Then make a decision. Allow the Holy Spirit to guide your interpretation so that your interpretation may be on the same level as what God is trying to say.

I believe the gift of tongues is real however I went to a pentacostal church a while back and was scared away from it from the (speaking in tongues) i have encountered actual tongues before and what i saw there was not from God this lady behind me was literally saying yada yada yada Oh Lord yada yada yada over and over again in a very loud voice.
Now I knew a user on here caleed keniseyes and I skyped with him many many times he had a studdering problem and I spoke with him for a little over a year and we went into a prayer chat with a few other user and as he was praying suddenly his studdering issue was gone and was speaking fluently in a language I have never heard of before.

I could sense the holy spirit in his tongue, I enjoyed everything about the pentacostal church except the fake tongues but in all honesty you should join whatever church you think you might enjoy

Brother..not just fake tongues. Its also demonic tongues... Heres a part of one or my articles
4.1 Speaking in tongues
One of the most favourite topics in Biblical discussions and one of the most abused gifts..Speaking in tongues. Now before I get into the scriptures I will tell you something that many do not consider… Corinth and other Churches were full with Pagans..It is a normal tradition to speak in unknown demonic tongues. It's a Occult thing which is why people are so afraid of speaking in tongues.
I will get back to this point soon. Just wanted to give you some background info on where
Paul is coming from and why (spiritually) because it is not only about understanding and interpreting the tongues to understand, also for safety. I've seen it myself where people started to be taken over by demons who started to curse the congregation without anyone besides me being there who understood what was going on... I can tell you it was creepy and unpleasant.
As this is about the Body of Christ being attacked and destroyed I will not go all too deep into what tongues are etc. but you can of course request me to make a Article on the Gifts of the Spirit and I will get to that as well.First of all.. Don't forbid speaking in tongues..
1 Corinthians 14:3939
Wherefore, brethren, covet to prophesy, and forbid not to speak with tongues.

We see that most of the arguments are about interpretation. We NEED interpreters. Many believe that not everything can be interpreted by everyone. I disagree. Everyone who speaks in a tongue can interpret it through praying.
1 Corinthians 14:13
Wherefore let him that speaketh in an unknown tongue pray that he may interpret.
Problem solved.. And in case there is no one that will interpret, rather be silent and talk to God.
1 Corinthians 14:28
But if there be no interpreter, let him keep silence in the church; and let him speak to himself, and to God.
Like I mentioned I saw firsthand demon tongues being used. Many religious spirits use this to break the Church apart. Pray and let God lead you. Be careful people.

I am Pentecostal. Uhm not believing in the gift means u reject Gods word. And its not a good idea to go anywhere where ppl speak in tongues and they aint interpreted. Thats dangerous.

By simply attending that college you are lending support to the doctrines and practices of that denomination... I cannot see how one can reject the particular manifestation of tongues (non-human language tongues) but then attend a college where that is deemed to be from the Holy Spirit..

Run from any Pentecostal college. There whole system is not biblical theology but experiential theology. Which is dangerous and opens up a whole lot of interpretation of scripture according to what one feels the spirit is doing and through the experience of the spirit.

Uhm... experience is what confirms scripture. If you read scripture but don't experience it, what good is it?

It's like they guy here who says you're not really going to move mountains with your faith - he believes that because he's never going to allow himself to experience moving a mountain with his faith.

Like Demi indicated above it's all a matter of discernment. Those who want to toss the baby with the bathwater do so because they never learned to discern one from the other. And I don't mean that as a slur, it's just an admonition to pray for discernment so you can be blessed experiencing the parts that are true instead of dismissing it all as false.

Actually its scripture which confirms experience. The Word of God paints an accurate understanding of the reality around us. Not reality around us painting the Word of God.

I agree that experience plays a big part of the christian life, but even our experiences are SUBJECT to the Word of God. It is culpable for criticism by the Word and correction.

Unfortunately with alot of pentecostal theology it is not objectively based upon a biblical understanding of Jesus but a subjective leading of the spirit which can lead us into problems and confusion.

Can you expand on this please? What exactly do you mean?

i went to a pentecostal bible college. i'm pentecostal, so this was not a problem for me. one of the classes that everyone took (regardless of major) was pentecostal doctrine. in the curriculum, the gift of tongues was taught/explained.

also, we had chapel daily, and so of course, being a pentecostal school, some sermons were about the gift of tongues.

i'm not saying the school you're looking into has all this since each school has it's own course plans and objectives. look into the course plan for your major to see what classes are required. maybe talk to someone in the admissions office?

but above all, pray for direction :)

I believe in the gift of tongues. I don't believe in everyone who speaks it. Some I can tell just do it for attention and it sounds so forced and fake. We have to be careful not to believe everything we see in church

I think you should attend as long as they hold to the truth that Jesus is the Son of God and his sacrifice atoned for the Christian who has accepted him as their savior and Lord. I am a pentecostal and believe in speaking in tongues....I must admit I have never spoken in tongues and there are a few charlatans out there who say gibberish to deceive others but I believe it is a real spiritual gift.....bottom line don't let any man force their belief system on you....think for yourself and pray/seek God b/c the Holy Spirit living inside you as a true Christian will guide you to all truth. There are many gifts of the spirit not just speaking in tongues but prophecy healing etc....those that say others will go to hell b/c of not speaking in tongues are promoting false doctrine/heresy.....tongues are 1 of several gifts and just like humans are all different and have different abilities God gives the Holy Spirit attributes to certain individuals according to how he sees fit....not everyone is a prophet, tongue talker, healer, some are given the ability to counsel others/wisdom.....one gift (tongue talkers) should not despise anothers gift (non tongue talker but counsellor/prophet etc).....

Don't imbibe everything they teach you, but think for yourself as I always always say.....filter it through the Bible and inner conviction of the HOly Spirit....if something doesn't add up trash it and keep the good....use discernment another thing that is in short supply in modern Christian circles....

I go to a Pentecostal church.

Tongues like anything can be counterfeit or real, wherever there is a genuine work,
Satan will also try to take advantage.

Having said that I was really skeptical about speaking on tongues when I first started going.
I told God if this is real and a gift from you then I want it, but I want it to be real not put etc.
I was so adamant and careful that I did not just get carried away, that for years I could not
speak in tongues at all. Then I started to find it welling up in my during times of worship.
Its not something that comes from you head or your brain, you feel it in your stomach.
You just know it's the Holy Spirit. It's hard to explain it's not an intellectual decision, when
it happens for real you just know it's real.

It was only at that point that I really understood the verses about springs of living water.

To be honest I still can't speak in tongues freely like some others can, it only happens on
occasions, usually during times of worship, but at least I know it's real.

God does speak to me in other ways though and I get that same welling up from the
stomache feeling.

Speaking in tongues is just one sign of the Holy Spirit in a person's life but there are many
others too.

I would not be quite so quick to dismiss the gifts of the Holy Spirit, they are life changing.
At least be open to God revealing them to you rather than blank them out completely. :)

All too often it's the fear of the falsehoods that keep people from embracing the true gifts.

No matter what the denomination of Bible college you go to, you are in danger of being un-biblically indoctrinated. I've known people whose kids went into a Bible college Christian, and came out assured that Jesus was not so important as they had previously thought. Really, it doesn't matter what YOU believe. It matters what the Bible says is true. There will be impersonators for every good and true thing. If the college teaches things that line up without Bible, without any added opinions and all that other junk, then it's an alright choice.
