There is audio narrations of the bible verse by verse on youtube. Perhaps you can retain the information by that method.

Find a translation that works for you, find a speaker/teacher you connect with, and find related literature to educate yourself.

If it all still eludes you, do not force it. Maintain an open mind and an open heart about it, but move on.

perhaps there is something else you should go do right now

take what He says over all, have no prethoughts on what is said, look at who's speaking

Do the reading when the time is good? It's not a textbook where you get to the end and have anything, perhaps you have as much information from it you are supposed to have this second, perhaps your getting into something you shuld know later, or perhaps you have something else you should do later, or right now.

You might have hit a plateau with your faith. Go back to what you fell in love with to start with. If its Gods forgiveness do a study on it. Faith should never get stale.

Sounds like you've hit a spiritual dry spell. Start off by praying and praising. Ask God to give you a willing mind and a receptive heart towards the Bible. Confess your apathy, boredom, complacency, laziness, whatever it may be and praise Him for His goodness, kindness, and faithfulness. Find Scriptures that encourage you to seek and praise God. The whole purpose of this is to align yourself to God's heart. When your attitude is in the right place, your actions will follow. Some of my favorite Scriptures are: Psalm 51:10, Mark 9:24, Psalm 42:1-2, Psalm 23&27, Proverbs 1:5, 7, Psalm 110:10, Psalm 19, 1 Peter 5:7, Matthew 7:7-8. Start meditating on them slowly and pray over them. I like to personalize them in prayer. Reading a devotional like Our Daily Bread and Utmost For His Highest helps. Play worship songs. Go slow and build on up. And don't beat yourself up, all that matters is that you're trying to grow closer to God!
