Hi all!

Through the years of my Christian walk, as my perspective changed and whatnot, my thoughts on Joyce Meyer changed.

I started my walk out listening to her, then I got away from her because she teaches a form of the prosperity gospel. Then I gave her a chance again.

After listening to many of her sermons and reading some of her books, I realize she doesn't focus so much on getting things, as we generally think of from the prosperity gospel - she focuses more on right thinking and good behavior. But one would have to listen to her consistently to get that.

One time I was really struggling with anger and my bipolar illness, and Battlefield of the Mind helped me quite a bit in developing better thought patterns. Now I'm reading Power Thoughts, because I need to set my mind in a better place again with a lot of stress from work.

I guess I just want thoughts and opinions on what YOU ALL think about Joyce Meyer, especially her approach to Scripture and application of it. I'm all ears!

I read this article from CRI about Joyce Meyer:

The Teachings of Joyce Meyer
Article ID: DM472 | By: CRI Statement

Joyce Meyer is a popular Pentecostal preacher living outside of St. Louis, MO, who has been in full time ministry since 1980. She is a best-selling author in the Christian market, and her books cover everything from America’s Christian heritage to weight-loss. But she is perhaps best known from her radio and television program, Life in the Word, both of which are broadcast nationally and internationally.

Meyer shares the platform from time to time with Word of Faith teachers like, for example, Kenneth Copeland, Jesse Duplantis, Benny Hinn, and T.D. Jakes. CRI is critical of and concerned with some of her practices and teachings.

In her 1991 booklet, The Most Important Decision You Will Ever Make, she teaches a hallmark doctrine of Faith theology, namely, that Christ had to suffer in hell to atone for our sins and be born again:

During that time He entered hell, where you and I deserved to go (legally) because of our sin….He paid the price there.…no plan was too extreme…Jesus paid on the cross and in hell….God rose up from His throne and said to demon powers tormenting the sinless Son of God, “Let Him go.” Then the resurrection power of Almighty God went through hell and filled Jesus….He was resurrected from the dead ¾ the first born-again man.

Her assertions are not unlike those of leading Word of Faith proponent Kenneth Copeland, who also believes Christ’s death on the cross was not sufficient to atone for our sins, and that His work of redemption was completed by suffering in hell and being born again. According to Copeland,

When Jesus cried, “It is finished!” He was not speaking of the plan of redemption. There were still three days and nights to go through before He went to the throne….Jesus’ death on the cross was only the beginning of the complete work of redemption.

[The] word of the living God went down into the pit of destruction and charged the spirit of Jesus with resurrection power! Suddenly His twisted, death-wracked spirit began to fill out and come back to life. He began to look like something the devil had never seen before. He was literally being reborn before the devil’s very eyes. He began to flex His spiritual muscles….Jesus was born again ¾ the first-born from the dead.

According to a recently published interview with free-lance writer Ken Walker, however, Meyer contradictorily denies ever believing or teaching that Christ was born again in hell.

Moreover, in her 1991 booklet, Meyer asserts that salvation is impossible without believing Jesus suffered in hell as the believer’s substitute. Meyer writes, “There is no hope of anyone going to heaven unless they believe this truth I am presenting. You cannot go to heaven unless you believe with all your heart that Jesus took your place in hell.”

While historic Christianity has debated the issue of whether or not Jesus actually descended into hell (e.g., to proclaim the gospel, declare victory, etc. [1 Peter 3:18-19]), no orthodox believer ever held to the belief that Christ suffered and atoned for our sins in hell, rather than on the cross. Yet, Word of Faith teachers, including Joyce Meyer, teach the necessity of Jesus having to pay for our sins in hell, under the torment of Satan and his angels ¾ a teaching both unsubstantiated by and contrary to Scripture.

The entirety of Christ’s atoning work (i.e., His suffering and death in our place) occurred on the cross (e.g., 1 Peter 2:24), ending with His proclamation, “It is finished” (John 19:30). The Christ of Faith theology literally had to become sin, taking on the nature of Satan while in hell, thereby needing to be born again in hell before His resurrection could occur.

OTHER QUESTIONABLE TEACHINGS

Meyer also advocates peculiar and unbiblical manifestations at church gatherings, and attributes them to the power of God. She proclaims, you gotta come on out in the deep….Oh, I think that word’s anointed right now. Deeeep!!! Mmmmmm! One lady was in a conference recently in St. Louis, and she said “I am telling you, every time you said the word “deep” the fire of God hit me in the pit of my guts.” The lady, she kept falling out of her chair and being on the floor, you know? And she said later, “every time you said ‘deeeeep’ it was like I just couldn’t stay in my chair!”

Prior to hearing this, I was unaware that Joyce Meyer taught that Jesus atoned for our sins in hell.

Thank you for this article... I was unaware of this teaching. It must be one of her more obscure teachings, because I don't hear or read of her focusing on the mechanics of Jesus' atonement very much.

I think she is one of the most genuine teachers today. Do I think she may have been off target 26 years ago with that "punishment in Hell" thinking? Probably. But I would hate to be judged for some of the weird doctrinal ideas I had 26 years ago.

Back then, I actually believed God punished Jesus on the cross. Boy, is THAT ever sick!

Has she renounced those false teachings from 26 years ago? I sure hope she did.

I've never really listened to her to base an opinion. The only thing I would have issues with if she is considering herself to be a full-time pastor? Or does she consider herself an evangelist?

Well, I would say if someone with the vast and effectively immediate resources we have available to us today had to go all the way back to 1991 to find her saying that, then there is a slight possibility her thinking might be a bit different today.

BTW, what is your own notion of the "punishment" awaiting people in this place known as "Hell"? Most people think it is going to be torment by demons, and burning in a lake of fire.

Now, if you read in the Bible that Jesus took our punishment for us....... I wonder what would come to your mind as a teacher just starting out. Me, I believe I would probably think Jesus was going to endure (in my place) the identical punishment I was imagining is waiting for us all.

Just a thought, since none of us really know for sure.

I think she calls herself a teacher, under the authority of the Pastor of her church in Fenton, MO (St. Louis area)

For crying out loud, she commands people to give money until it hurts and then she uses that money to buy a 20 million dollar jet plane so she can fly in comfort. When asked about the plane she stated that she did so much good that she deserved it. She knows how to draw a crowd and make them laugh and give money. When she first decided to teach the bible she did so while smoking and wearing a mini skirt, she still had big crowds. Folks need to wake up, just because someone can quote places in the bible and make people laugh does not make that person a servant of the Lord.

Can you provide resources on that? Just curious not trying to say you are wrong.

I suppose it could be found on the net, just go to Joyce Meyer on giving money and jet plane. Yes I watched her say, give until it hurts, and also, I "should have", or deserve this jet plane because I do so much good. People like her are living in a parallel universe, they are presenting a form of the gospel that does not exist in the NT. The twelve apostles were given huge amounts of money, Peter could have bought him a chariot with six white horses so that he could visit all the churches, but he did not do that, he walked, as did all the other believers. ALL of these folks who have used God to get rich have missed it big time, and it does not matter if they can quote scripture and make folks laugh.

My dear brothers and sisters in the LORD, for it is written, " But GOD'S firm foundation stands, bearing this seal: 'The LORD knows those who are HIS, 'Let everyone who names the name of the LORD depart from iniquity (2 Timothy 2:19)."

If you want to really know the authentic truth about her (Joyce Meyer), it is very simple and easy. Just go to GOD ALMIGHTY our HOLY FATHER in Heaven and ask HIM who Joyce Meyer is to HIM. For GOD ALMIGHTY has said, "Call to Me and I will answer you, and will tell you great and hidden things which you have not known (Jeremiah 33:3)."

Stop saying what you don't know about anyone, be careful the way you speak because life and death lies on the tongue.
As a Christian, we walk by faith not by sight. Speak Faith.

You can also know who she is by what JESUS said, "You Will Know Them by Their Fruits - “Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ravenous wolves." Read the message I posted hear titled "How To Identify A True Man/Woman of GOD".

GOD ALMIGHTY is happy to hear from you, so talk to HIM.
Emmanuel! Emmanuel! Emmanuel!
