Okay, I see where you're coming from but, really, Joe. Harsh words. Have you never met people with weaknesses before?

I, for one, don't smoke. But I have my own weaknesses that I struggle with so I know what it's like. You make it sound like you don't. Well, good on you. Jesus died for the weak.
Nay we all have things that make us vulnerable, just good to keep from things that are dangerous is all.

How much do you trust him, if you don't dare to ask why? He is God! Do you fear he falls apart if you ask why?

God always has a Why. He's God. He may not tell us why, but he gives Why eventually. He has answered most of my whys. Because of that, I trust him more to answer the rest later. (And, I'm going nuts on the "Why can't you get me to quit smoking, Lord?" question.)
that parenthesied question is simple enough to answer, though you probably already know the answer, you have to have "a desire and will to stop smoking otherwise you'll just seek it again, after all if you can't see it as "wrong" how do you expect to quit partaking of it?

there's a huge difference between condemning someone and stating an honest belief that the op asks us as a question....

266. hamartia ►
Strong's Concordance
hamartia: a sin, failure
Original Word: ἁμαρτία, ας, ἡ
Part of Speech: Noun, Feminine
Transliteration: hamartia
Phonetic Spelling: (ham-ar-tee'-ah)
Short Definition: a sin
Definition: prop: missing the mark; hence: (a) guilt, sin, (b) a fault, failure (in an ethical sense), sinful deed.

i struggle with this addiction too lynn..

but we have a different view on the word sin

or what smoking really is....

its not of faith....
when we know to good and dont do it... what is that?

victory over sin?
or bondage to it?

It's not about the OP's question anymore. That has been answered. (We're officially derailing this thread)

This is how you not help someone struggling. By telling them to just not do it. This is condemnation. The world is not black and white. If it was, then we wouldn't be having this thread.

...you have to have "a desire and will to stop smoking otherwise you'll just seek it again, after all if you can't see it as "wrong" how do you expect to quit partaking of it?
...being "unappreciative" of all Jesus did for us,not to mention "Useless" and "a waste of time".

Dont you mean that you agree not to agree with what you disagree with and therefore disagree with what you agreed with?

"the wages of sin are death" so yep smoking cigarettes is a sin because it hurts a person even to the point of death just the same as sin.

I Corinthians 6:19

Since the human body is the Sacred Temple it logically follows that desecrating it in any way such as the introduction of anything harmful to oneself or to others is or should be viewed as sin.

That didn't make sense, since whether someone smokes or not doesn't change the fact he/she will die. With that logic then eating flour is sin.
I contend flour is as bad as tobacco smoke.

i think it can DEFINITELY be counted against someone as sin

if you are convicted by your new God given heart and spirit to quit

and you dont

then your conscious will testify against you on judgement day

i personally have struggled a lot with smoking

ive quit
restarted quit restarted

switched to e cigs

but an addiction for worldly things is not of God
(including e-cigs)
its of your flesh

and giving in
is feeding your fleshly lusts

im not saying all cigarette smokers go to hell

but maybe of you have a problem

and are convicted to stop smoking

maybe start taking steps to get it out of your life

and if youre trying to justify it... maybe take a second look and see if youre decieving yourself
I'm a baptist, everything puts us in hell.

I don't think smoking is a sin per se, but it is bad for your health. Also, there are different kinds of smoking. I believe cigarettes are much worse for a person than pipe smoking or cigars.

/takes another puff on tobacco pipe while contemplating the evils of smoking
I love a good cigar.

OP- Nope. Nothing wrong with smoking. It isn't the healthiest thing in the world, most health issues occur due to a long term addictive habit.

But anything can become an idol- especially items of addictive nature. If you find yourself in a position where cigarettes are more important to you than God- then smoking can be a sin.

You all aren't in CoMO, are you? Did you know you have to be 21 to buy? City council is doing whatever they can to ban smokers without outright banning them. Even as a non-smoker... it drives me nuts. In cases like this- live and let live.

Then again.... CoMO has a lot more problems than how they treat smokers....
I bet they say nothing about alcohol.

I don't know if it's just my imagination, but it seems like some of the people who live the longest are, ironically, lifelong smokers. My Grandma has smoked since she was like 14 or so. Yet she's still here at 81. Sure she has some health problems, but she still gets around okay.
I've noticed this too. I think genetics is everything with disease.

Well, something is very much wrong with smoking. But there is something very much wrong with rolling through poison ivy too, yet neither is sin.

As for the politics? Seems really stupid to legalize marijuana while making tobacco more and more illegal. I've never crashed a vehicle while "stoned" on a cig. I've never operated heavy machinery while stoned on tobacco. I've never lit my hair on fire while stoned on tobacco. (Did while stoned on marijuana.)

Funny thing, alcohol is just as bad for you as tobacco, but politicians, who get lobbyist money and campaign money while drinking, don't seem to have any problems with alcohol. Coincidentia? I think not!
It's what happens whrn idiots trust feelings over facts.

Hmmmm. Sin, sin, sin. I'm a sinner. Can we just agree that sin is what tears us from God. Doesn't have to be anything in particular.
I always picture God with a big ol fat, Dominican el Presidente. Hand rolled by the hands of angels. I bet his beer has the sweetest foam. I bet the prime rib served in heaven can be cut with a fork.

Yes,Yes,I don't like even the smell of coffee,I'm allergic to chocolate, and rather not seek out sin,I have plenty of example people who have shown that any such obsessive or compulsive habits are not worth having, though popular.

Great lifestyle choices.

(but boy have we seen smokers and other substance users get defensive)
This is to be expected. The moment that you state your stance on any kind of topic that is against their sinful grain, that's the promised reaction sadly. However, you must be encouraged in your message which is actually very caring and keep advocating what is right according to God's word. If we all stopped just because it doesn't tickle some flesh, we would never have any progression or growth in our walk with Christ.

To the OP, if you would like to look into health and addiction further get busy with Psalms 109: 17 - 21 where David complains that people were trying to give him a false image and one of the things they tried to do was to accuse of the same sin as James in the story. It goes into detail about habitual sin and what action you can take.

Psalms 143: 5 - 10 teaches you about pursuing addictions for a long time. Hosea 4: 12 - 13 discusses things that are missing in people's lives and that which they put higher on their list of priorities than their committment to God. 2 Peter: 2 - 19 talks about being enslaved to anything, smoking is one of the worst culprits of this and gives words of warning in the passage that are ideal to pay attention too.

Remember if there's anything taking God's place in your life, ask Him to help and forgive you!
