Please bear with me, this is probably a very stupid question - but I've been confused for quite a while when it comes to the Big Bang Theory.

The thing is - I've been panicking for a while trying to prove to myself that the Universe is definitely Not eternal, and that God absolutely exists, no doubt.

Many people, even atheist "scientists" like Stephen Hawking knows that the Universe isn't eternal - due to the Big Bang Theory and that the Universe is expanding.
My issue - I don't understand completely as to Why Universal expansion Proves that Universe is indeed not eternal.

Like everywhere I search online, it's all "The Universe expands! You can trace it down to a point and where it started. The Universe had a Beginning." However, no one actually explains exactly How Universal expansion proves that the Universe isn't eternal, and how this expansion means that it ultimately began.
I have two Honest issues with this.

The first one is that I don't have direct access to the Hubble Telescope (..funny issue, I know). I can't Literally see with my own eyes that the Universe is indeed expanding.
I'm a die-hard skeptic (But I'm no moron, I do know God exists), so my heart won't rest on "The Universe is expanding because 'scientists' say so."

My second issue is a question - what makes Expansion of the Universe so special? Can someone explain why That specific aspect of the Universe proves that it isn't eternal?
...Doesn't the fact that the Universe is constantly changing prove that it's Not eternal?
-
Allow me to demonstrate - let me see if I get this right :

1. The Universe is expanding,

2. Which means the Universe Was a definite width in size before hand,

3. This means that it didn't stay that previous size for an eternity,

4. Which means that the Universe could not have been an infinite amount of previous sizes before hand (or else it would've never gotten to that size in the first place) / in other words, the Universe had a First set size,

5. Which means that the Universe could Not have had a size before That size (or else That would be it's first set size instead),

Therefore, the Universe is Not eternal.

..am I correct?

If so - couldn't you just replace the word "expanding" with changing instead? It still cannot have an infinite amount of different ways of existing Before it's current changed way - isn't that correct?

Basically, is it the fact that the Universe is changing is why it's not eternal - or is it Specifically because it's Expanding..? I don't quite understand, and I REALLY would like to know.

Any help on this subject would be Greatly appreciated. Please, let me know what I'm missing! What is it that I am Not understanding? Thank you and God bless.

Your Questions

1. "My issue - I don't understand completely as to Why Universal expansion Proves that Universe is indeed not eternal."

If you have questions about science, that even atheist scientists can answer (as you already stated very clearly) ...
then why are you on a Christian Community forum instead of on a science website?

2. "My second issue is a question - what makes Expansion of the Universe so special? Can someone explain why That specific aspect of the Universe proves that it isn't eternal?
...Doesn't the fact that the Universe is constantly changing prove that it's Not eternal?"

Again, if you have questions about science, that even atheist scientists can answer (as you already stated very clearly) ...
then why are you on a Christian Community forum instead of on a science website?

Conclusion

There is no reason for you to be asking these questions here -
if you're smart enough to understand the astrophysics problems and ask the astrophysics questions,
then you're smart enough to know the answers to astrophysics questions are on astrophysics websites.

In actuality, the mere fact you have even HEARD these theories proves you're already familiar with astrophysics sources... as those are the only places you would get them.

So why are you here?

I really do Not mean any harm, sir. In fact, I clearly stated that I Do indeed know that God exists.
I'm actually stating that I'm too stupid to actually understand why the Big Bang Theory proves that the Universe is Not eternal. All I'm asking for is someone more intelligent than I to clear it up for me.

Yes! I actually Do - that's Why I came here in the first place! I even stated that no matter how much I searched, websites (ALL websites I've searched btw) just claim that the universe expanding proves that it Isn't eternal.
I literally mean NO harm. I simply want to know How. It's basically like someone telling me "Someone painted this picture yellow", and I ask "Well, did the paint come from a palete or a tube?" and I basically find No answer to that. That's All I'm asking for. Is it because of Change? Is it Literally because of expansion? I've been wondering for Months and I would just like an answer. I can't help my mental status and inability to understand from the sentence alone. I just cannot understand - but I Want to understand.

I meant no harm either. What I meant is that all you will get here is just other people's guesses. The Bible doesn't give a scientific answer to that question, and no one here has God's knowledge about what He intended and intends to do.

Welcome to CC!

We get atheist trolls quite often here. Forgive our skepticism regarding your query.

I think your getting stuck on the whole eternal thing. Something that is not eternal is subject to time constraints.
God is outside of time. It isn't merely that He has a lot of it.
IN THE BEGINNING..... Right off the bat we have the creation of time. GOD CREATED THE HEAVENS AND EARTH.... Right there we have the universe. Created under time constraints. It isn't eternal. We don't need scientific phd's to tell us the universe isn't eternal. Scripture does that just fine.

My best response is the universe, according to "science" started out as an explosion. What happens from the center of an explosion? Everything goes outward.
And next they claim the universe is like a rubberband. It can only stretch so far before it snaps back. So now we have something similar to an implosion. What happens when the entire universe comes back together?

This isn't my field so i can't give many quality answers but that's one I'm vaguely familiar with.

To the OP I think you answered your own question in the first few lines
“it comes to the Big Bang theory.”

It is just a Theory, an ever expanding changing theory. Would you believe
an every expanding changing theory which teaches about an every expanding
concept.

No one was there in the beginning except God, it’s far better to trust an eye witness.

That of course leads to the next question of is God real. I and many on here can
testify that He is. So.. believe someone who wasn’t there or believe God, which
will it be.

By the way the BBT has only been around since 1927, the person who came up
with it is now dead.

Let me try to understand... You are asking us to prove that the universe is eternal and has always existed?

Why come to a Christian forum and ask Christians to defend a position Christianity does not believe??..

We believe the universe was created.. Therefore we believe that the universe did not always exist.. Therefore we do not believe in a universe that has always existed...

There is a scientific law (a law of therodynamics) which states that neither matter nor energy can be created nor destroyed, but can only be changed in form. If neither matter nor energy could be CREATED nor DESTROYED, then HOW LONG would the all the matter throughout the entirety of space would have had to exist PREVIOUS to "the big bang," assuming that there ever WAS any "big bang?" The answer is it would have had to exist since ETERNITY PAST! Secondly, where did all the ENERGY come from for such a "big bang," since that energy could not have been created, but that energy would have had to be MASSIVE, in order to fling decillions of tons of matter out across countless light years of distance? As a scientist, I have to tell you that "the big bang" must be a fairy tale or a fabrication, because it makes a total mockery of mankind's laws of physics!

I happen to have it on good authority, from people who consider themselves to be much smarter than you or I, that once there nothing, and for no apparent or discernable reason, something that did not exist happened to that nothing, causing that nothing to inexplicably explode, which magically created everything, that mysteriously ordered itself into inorganic materials, that gave rise to organic self replicating life forms, which were intrinsically imbued with consciousness, that eventually led to the intelligence of the origin of life on earth from nothing, for no good reason!

I'm sorry that you get a negative response from some people just because you are interested in science.

The Theory of Big Bang is not really interesting nor significant, the only thing it tells us is that the universe hasn't always been here and the theory of an expanding universe is also just a theory.
We know that galaxies are moving away from each other, which is the logic behind the theory of an expanding universe but no one can truly say if there is space within this universe where there is nothing but space no asteroids, stars, galaxies just dark space, like an empty room.

If the universe (meaning space) is eternal we could still have some universes moving away from each other, because we cant measure how far blackness goes, because there is no reference point. What is behind what we find, and what is behind that? And at which point are we ever going to be able to take the word eternal into out mouth scientifically?

The fact that the galaxies are moving away from each other is also the basis of the Big Bang theory because if all of them are moving away from each other, it means that they used to be closer to each other. Therefore scientists have believe that the galaxies all came from the same spot in this empty space. If you think of the Big Bang as a hand grenade going off throwing metal pieces in all directions. The thing is that scientists are watching the galaxies as if they were metal pieces from that hand grenade, they are trying to calculate when and where the grenade exploded by measuring the metal pieces flying in space.

So the first important question for you is, what do you mean when you talk about the Universe, do you mean space also empty and full, because in that sense we cant prove anything about space, not an expansion or anything else.

If you are talking about the galaxies as being the universe, we can prove that the galaxies are moving away from each other, which is in that sense is expanding in space. But that is only interesting because it makes the Big Bang theory plausible, in some sense. They still have no explanation for how everything came into being, out of nothing.
The Big Bang could easily have been how God made everything come into existence. They try to measure when the big bang started by trying to count back in time until things galaxies collide but they assume that the galaxies their speed is constant and have always been constant - which is a flawed scientific assumption when we talk about something that we cant touch or measure.

Some scientists think that the Big Bang theory is in conflict but it is in fact not true. You might find a couple, but if you in your scientific methodical approach are a critical rationalist you'll find that there isn't a conflict at all and that their results actually points toward the fact that there is an awesome God.

God bless you I hope my answer gave some clarity.

Here is some additional evidence which tends to support my previous post on this thread. I hope it provides enough evidence from numerous sources, most of which say the same things!

I'm late for this post, but I wouldn't worry about it. Even Stephen Hawking doesn't believe in the Big Bang. (BTW, he does think the universe is eternal. Then again, most scientists, especially him, are out to prove God doesn't exist, and thus the wild science. It's really not science. It's speculation.)

James McCanney is an independent scientist. He discovered the electrical nature of the universe. He is not a young earth creationist. He says that the theory of dark matter was created to explain the holes (pun intended) in the big bang theory. He says the large distances between stars based on the red shift of light emitted from stars farther way bending on the light's parth to earth (I don't understand this) is better explained by gravity of large stars like our sun bending the light. He wanted to do an experiment of having people send in pictures of the sky along the path of the total solar eclipse this summer to see the star's position when the sun is eclipsed then look at their position during the night time.
McCanney says Venus was a comet that Jupiter and our Sun captured. He says oil reserves on earth are from comet tails spreading fire and brimstone. He believes in biological evolution but not the big bang. His website is jmccsci.com.

My issue - I don't understand completely as to Why Universal expansion Proves that Universe is indeed not eternal.
Discovery of the expansion proved that the universe is not static, which demands a beginning or a point at which the state changed. However, a measurement of time "prior" to the big-bang would be paradoxical. So from here there are different trains of thought, but some of the predominant ones are the cyclic model (universe expands and contracts over an eternity) and multiverse theory (ours is one of infinite universes).

The problem with all origin theories is that you have to trace back to something with an infinite state. So you're right to say that the singularity could not have been the infinite state given that it changed (this is why that claim is less popular today). Expansion proves that the universe had a beginning. But most will stop at the big-bang simply because time cannot be measured beforehand. So what is eternal would be a form of cycling, or an infinite external source of origin (i.e.: God).
