As long as he repented of Satanist Music I think it's wonderful. I used to listen to Slayer and I repented, so why can't he be a Christian if he stops doing satanic music.

Here's some context for this thread:

Sources inform us that Slayer frontman Tom Araya and drummer Dave Lombardo have started a yet-named Christian metal side project with ex-Living Sacrifice (and more recently POD) guitarist, Jason Truby. The three have been jamming together since the end of the recent Slayer tour with Unearth and they are presently looking for a second guitarist.

Araya, who is Catholic, has commented several times in recent interviews that he and Lombardo don’t necessarily subscribe to the lyrical content of Slayer’s songs.

“We’ve been playing this kind of music with dark themes and anti-religious topics for a long time now and I feel like I need something new, something more positive in my life,” explained Araya. Chuckling, he continued, “I feel like I have to do some penance as a good Catholic, you know?”

Slayer fans need not worry though – when asked if he is disbanding Slayer, Tom reassured his fanbase: “This new project will not interfere with Slayer any more than me going to church has. It’s just a small side thing at the moment.”

When asked to comment on the project, Kerry King had only this to say: “Whatever Tom and Dave need to do to exorcise their demons and keep the Slayer machine moving is ok with me. I wish them the best on their project.”

The fact that he feels no need to change anything about Slayer or even stop doing it, to me, says a lot about how serious he is. But, he's a catholic, so I kinda understand where he's coming from. He's doing a Christian project as an attempt to counteract the damage he's done/doing with Slayer.

Interesting topic. Thanks for bringing it up.

I used to listen to Slayer back in the 1980's and even then we knew they were a christian rock band. Back then I only listened because my friends and I thought they were a good metal band. None of us were christian.

Slayer? A Christian rock band? Slayer is neither Christian nor rock.
And i don't buy the whole Araya is a Christian thing. With lyrics like theirs & the constant use of inverted pentagrams, etc. i don't see how anyone following the conscience of the Holy Spirit could support that kind of a message. Fruits of the Spirit.

Well, back then we didn't know what a christian was and we figured since they mention Jesus in their songs that they were christian. Heavy metal is a type of rock music just like hard rock, punk rock, classic rock, grunge, alternative, etc...

Slayer is fantastic... 'course, I don't really buy too much into the lyrical content but Hanneman and King play their guitars well.

Slayer is an American thrash band that formed in the early 80s. They're known for their anti-God, anti-religion and occult themes in their lyrics and visuals. A pentagram of swords is their main logo, but they're also known to use inverted crosses.
They have album titles like.. Hell Awaits.. Reign In Blood.. South Of Heaven.. God Hates Us All.

I recall Tom stating on the "War at the Warfield" DVD that the attack on the twin towers was proof enough that God hates us, or proof that there simply isn't one.

And now this? Does not compute.

I think that if he is staying it out loud that he probably really is because when you truly become a child of Christ you want to shout out to the world what has happened to you because you get a set of spiritual eyes. You feel like you have never ever felt before in your life and its not coming from you. i pray with all of my heart that it is true. Because he could do some awesome work for our King because he is known by the world and it would touch many many lives.

and you all know that the walk of a Christian is anything but easy and more often then not people try to hide that Christ is in them ( still trying to figure that one out) I myself love God with every fiber of my being and sometimes this retarded make no sense what so ever urge to hide it in front of others because I am afraid of what they will think crosses my mind with this shame that is unthinkably the dumbest crap that has ever crossed my mind.....retarded retarded retarded. Thats normally when I mentally flip the devil off and take my ipod filled with nothing but christian music to work and plug in. Ever notice how unsaved ppl squirm when faced with loud christian music and are forced to hear it? lol So it takes big ones to be able to not give a rats butt what the world thinks and to openly say it.

Really? Ok, i'm going to post a few lyrics out of one song, off of their most recent album. Meaning, these are lyrics that were written after he claimed to be a Christian. Read these and tell me he's saved and just can't help but shout it out.

Not Of This God

Holy water empty threat, the holy cross has no effect
I p*ss on any object of virtue, crucifix and rosaries
A world of insecurities, keep waiting for your soul to be rescued
You'll see no bright tomorrow, a promise of more sorrow

You call him the messiah, I see a reckless fashion based on metal slavery

You are the tainted, I am the pure, you are the sickness
I am the cure, a toxic threat of your non sense, I feed
I'll be the one to bring Christ to his knees, crucify then ridiculed again
A target for all time, until the end

Hate Worldwide

I'm a godless heretic
Not a god-fearing lunatic
That's why it's become my obsession
To treat God like an infection

Religious death, I instigate
From what the bible demonstrates
Does it document creation
Of this hopeless infliction
Of a godless heretic
Not a god-fearing lunatic
Not a god-fearing lunatic
That's why it's become my obsession
To treat God like an infection
