my husband has written two books that have been published...one is called new life and it is a book of christian poetry that honours the Lord and he explains about how the Lord has transformed him and he has written a book of romantic poetry dedicated to me called Man in love and now he has yet to publish what I consider his greatest work and that is a novel called The Prostitute, Priest and Trucker that is kind of like a closer look at the life of someone like Mary Magdalene but set in modern times but showing the transforming powers of Jesus in our present age..it is fantastic and is nearly ready for publication...just needs a few final touches

Getting published is partly being a good author, obviously, but its also about not giving up, or being discouraged. If you're looking to be published, you should expect a lot of rejection. Perhaps years of rejection. Things that you put your heart and soul into and have them discarded casually over and over again.
Easiest way to start is probably not jumping straight into publishing companies but magazines. Some magazines will even pay for stories, at least once you develop a reputation within it.
An interesting read on this is Stephen Kings book (non-fiction) 'On Writing: A Memoir Of The Craft'. Its a book where he talks about his struggles to go from a nobody writer to the writing superstar he is today. I'm not a fan of his, but i did find the book interesting and informative.
Another idea is going to the bookstore and they should have a section on writing, and a lot of books on everything from how to get started writing your first novel to books on how to get published. Its a good starting point.
Also see if there are any writing groups in your area that meet. They will probably be good sources of information as well as helping to hone your writing skills.
