When getting an apartment for the first time what will/did you buy first?

I as SUPER upset and EVERYTHING. couldn't even distract myself like i usually do with my laptop cause the stupid internet wasn't working. But i hopped on my dad's treadmill and ran while listening to some worship and now everything is back in place. . . . .SO

I've decided that before i buy a couch or tv set or even a good bed, i'm going to buy a nice treadmill. ^-^ working out has done so much good for my mind. >_<

in my first apartment alone, I think the first thing I bought were sheets and a dresser.

I actually very recently moved into another apartment and I sold almost all my furniture from the last apartment because I wanted to decorate it completely different. (I LOVE doing this stuff..I've spent hours poring over pinterest, do it yourself blogs, etc..I have a specific vision for this apartment) The first things I'm planning to buy (before the couch and tv) are an area rug and a rocking chair, because I want a place to read and study other than in bed.

I had a treadmill at my old apartment (sold it)...very convenient for getting a workout in, and can't make excuses for not going to the gym..I figured id force myself to use the gym here.

In my first apartment, I remember the first item I bought was a coffee maker. When I wake up in the morning, the first things I need are God and coffee, in that order.

Aquagirl, you might want to look into a USB powered laptop cooler.

Its like a little lap tray you sit your laptop on, and you can plug it into one of your usb ports to turn on the fan.

I don't think I paid more than 10 dollars for mine a few years ago, they shouldn't be too expensive if you're looking around on Amazon

They look like this:

Might hold you over until you find the desk you like.

i bought a cooler. . . .but it broke. (it was cheap T-T ) but it was also extremely hard to keep under my laptop while i was trying to use it. it kept MOVING! >_> plus if i'm on my bed doing HW then i'm not getting anything done. i can focus better @ a desk. ^-^ i either play on the internet or fall asleep in bed. . . . .with the pillows so close my eyes just always wanna take a "quick" rest and suddenly I'm OUT for the rest of the day. >_<

True...easy to fall asleep. I can't nap either, or I'm just out.

Luckily you're in the market for all this apartment stuff now, prices will probably drop dramatically after Christmas.

the first things i actually bought were bowls and an cup because i had none. i was lucky enough to have my mom give me an extra couch she had and i had my bed from living at home. had a small tv too. the one thing i wanted and couldnt afford was a microwave, which a friend ended up getting for me. if not for that, it would've been the first thing appliance wise i would have bought

I didn't buy anything for my first apartment I had my name on the lease, it was a teeny tiny little studio and I could barely fit some of what I already owned..

Hey! I've been shopping for my first apartment too! I just thought that was kind of cool. For starters, I think the first thing I bought was pots and pans. (Even though I don't cook very much.) But when I do, I want every utensil ever invented to be within my grasp!

I felt really overwhelmed at first too because you're thinking about all of this stuff you have to buy, and the list seems to go on forever. I had buyer's anxiety. I just kept saving and saving, terrified to buy.
So my advice to you would be, just buy something. Something that's not relevant to the design of your apartment, like appliances or something like that. After you do, you'll see that it gets a lot easier and you'll figure out the rest. Slowly but surely, you'll get a good idea of the theme you want and all that jazz.

Also, all of us are on a tight budget these days. Not to mention that I'm a penny-pincher and will do anything to save a buck. There's a website that shows a lot of DIY projects if you're into that stuff.

I've made artwork, rugs, blankets, shelves, and all kinds of other stuff from that website. I haven't spent more than 10 dollars on a project either!

Here's the link:

Hope this helps!

A sofa.

I didn't have a bed or any seating options, so I thought the sofa would provide for both, as I could sleep on it.
