With the fall of the housing market in 2007 (and the subsequent failure of large banks and onset of the greatest recession this country's known since the Great Depression) the entire physical, financial and social landscape of this country changed drastically. Up until the economic boom of the early 2000's everyone wanted to live like kings and celebrities. People were buying houses just to resell them for a big profit a few months later. Banks were lending like there was no tomorrow and everyone was buying a new house or upgrading or taking out loans on their home's equity so they can buy new cars, big screen tvs, even other houses!
After the bottom fell out in 2007, the recession, record home foreclosures and double-digit unemployment has changed the thinking of many americans, especially the younger generation who are graduating college only to find that they can't land a job. Now people despise the rich and everything that they stand for. The big banks that were their best friends during the economic boom (because they loaned out money so freely) are now seen as the enemy (and with good reason!).
People are no longer wanting to live like kings and celebrities, now they just want HELP. Help to find work, help to get their credit back, help to simply make ends meet in this down economy. This is why so many americans are now favoring socialism over capitalism. They see capitalism as a corrupt and failed system because of the recession.
The truth is that it was the greed and carelessness of the banking industry that brought on the housing collapse and recession. Capitalism, when carried out with INTEGRITY does in fact create positive success stories and a stronger economy...but that's besides the point. The point is that the country is in a bad mood and they are looking for someone to blame and someone to take out their frustrations on.
