Hi everyone, I would love to get your views about the pope resigning and the chatholic faith in general. I had a discussion with some people who aren't catholics, pentecostal to be precise and the believe the pope resigning shouldn't be made as a big deal. Needless to say they aren't a big cheer leader of the Chatholic doctrine.

Which leads me to another question, why do Christians differ in views concerning their religious belief, i.e. Catholic, pentecostal, methodist etc.

I was raised as a Catholic but to be frank I do not mind which church I go to pray for I believe we all worship the same God.

Opine please. :)

Hi Abalong, welcome to CC!

Now I don't want to start an argument here, LOL, so let me say that this is just a guideline, for generalities. There are as many opinions as people.

In general, protestants do not believe in the ever-virginity of Mary, that Mary never sinned, and in the infallibility of The Pope when he speaks on matters of faith and morals.

My personal opinion on The Pope resigning: This is something that'll be in Catholic history for a long time, and I got to see it. That's pretty much it, I'm not broken up about it. He said he wanted to pray and meditate, that's fine with me.

My view of the pope resigning: he's, what, 85? It makes sense he wants to retire. He doesn't have the physical and mental energy anymore to lead the Catholic church. Of course, I've also heard that there are arrest warrants for the pope. I don't know the truth, but if there are, it would be a sad day indeed for Catholicism and Christianity in general.

As for why there are groups of Christians with different beliefs, that's something that stems back to early Christianity. Even the early churches, being located in different cities, believed slightly different things that the Scriptures they had at the time weren't completely clear on. Denominations like Methodist, Pentecostal, and so on are a result of people interpreting the Bible differently, personal biases and philosophies, and experiences they've had.

he is old. being the pope is a huge responsibility and I can't blame him for wanting to retire. I mean he has been working for the church for over 60 years! most people retire at 65 so he has already worked an extra 20 years!

I'm neither pentecostal nor catholic, but yeah, who cares? Hes just a guy in a puffed up man made position who quit his job. Happens all the time.

I couldn't care less about the Pope. I think the media needs to find something else to talk about.

Not Catholic. So I think there shouldn't even be a Pope.

Wow, I truly do like the opinions being shared, though majority are not in favor of the Catholic faith. I think my bafflement about different Christian doctrines will never be truly clarified. It shouldn't be a surprise then, that more and more people are really choosing not to attend churches on Sundays because of this disillusionment. Or am I wrong?

Actually, the official position of the site, and its owner is that Catholicism is not a part of the Christian faith. Though we do still have a number of Catholics and Catholic supporters.

Christians that choose not to attend church has nothing to do with the pope. People who are not catholic do not see the pope as anything of significance. He has no authority. No power. The pope is only for catholics.

I feel incredibly ignorant to the Catholic faith in general. All I have to say is I'm not even sure why there is ever a pope to begin with.

My opinion about him quitting? Dude's old. He more than earned it. People shouldn't judge. It's not like he's doing something outrageous like quitting being Catholic and moving to the rain forest to worship a volcano.
He still prays to the same God as before. Only difference now is it's less public.

I think only Batman should be able to wear a cape. If I could be either the Pope or Batman...I would choose Batman any day. Not that old Batman either. Adam West. The cool one.

I think it's a cool piece of history that we lived through. He's the Joe Paterno of religious leaders... You don't see the Dalai Lama protecting pedophiles. I have huge respect for the tradition of the Catholic Church and for the believers but its leadership needs to get its act together with a new pope who will put this evil history behind them.
