You know, even a person driven by moral indignation to correct injustice can become corrupted by his own sense of righteousness.

So don't see anything morally reprehensible in this group's activities? Evidently not!

You should call Pastor Phelps at and formally offer him your allegiance.
Way to strawman me...

Wow, and I thought Christians weren't supposed to judge...
clearly I find his actions morally reprehensible, that doesn't mean we should or could arrest them. You could find sleeping around morally reprehensbible yet you have no right to arrest someone for it. Just as their freedom of speech is protected, I'm not being physically harmed by them.

I did strawman you, didn't I? Sorry about that.

First of all, even though I do not like what Westboro Baptist "Church" is doing, they have freedom of religion and freedom of speech, even though they are misguided by this Phelps who has cult status on his members. I have heard of one woman who has left them, I forget her name. Second, instead of just decrying what is happening with them, pray to God that those who are in that movement would realize that while God is not for homosexuality, he is not hating those who call themselves homosexuals. He wants them to tell them about Jesus and how he change their lives, instead of condemning them. We need a modern-day Paul to go in there, rebuke, and ask some deep questions of why they are doing what they are doing. God bless.

Anyone can say what they want as long as they don't physcially harm others, we can't be the thought police, the best thing people can do is counterprotest or just don't feed the trolls.

The weapon they wield is hate. Hate, anger, and sorrow. We can't wield these weapons like they do because we are Christians. Our only true weapon is the love of Christ.

Prayer of Saint Francis of Assisi

Lord, make me an instrument of your peace.
Where there is hatred, let me sow love;
where there is injury,pardon;
where there is doubt, faith;
where there is despair, hope;
where there is darkness, light;
and where there is sadness, joy.

O Divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek
to be consoled as to console;
to be understood as to understand;
to be loved as to love.
For it is in giving that we receive;
it is in pardoning that we are pardoned;
and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.

Amen

Attack with love.
Wield the sword of peace.

Very well put and good observation.

The heart - no. Most people take judgement out of context though.

Westboro has clearly stepped over that line of "free speech" in a way that no one else could get away with. What makes them so special?

A good bunch of them are lawyers...they know how to work the system.

That's what worries me the most. It gives the appearance of charlatanism.

I'm guessing if you look in the mirror, you see a sinner. WBC doesn't because it never looks.
Works both ways. Us, and them.

Often the hatred people have for the WBC goes unseen because of their own feelings of self-righteousness. Threads like this where Christians come out to express their hatred for the WBC make a great example. "I'm so righteous, and you aren't."

When crosses or other Christian symbols are placed in public places, they are torn down.
Odd, I see Christian symbols in public places all the time. They are all temporary and brought by people within the community, but I often see them.

A portrait of Jesus cannot be placed in a school without uproar and outrage. It's the worst thing ever!
Well, in most of the cases I can think of that happening it would be against the law.

And the Ground Zero Cross in NYC that wasn't even built or planned? More uproar.
Nor was it even a traditional cross shape. It didn't get much uproar. As far as I can remember only one atheist group was protesting one of them, from the most famous image, being put into a museum. The case made by the atheist group didn't even get much support from within the atheist community, much less society as a whole.

I obviously don't like the actions of the WBC. However when I met some of them one time, I have to say that I was pretty surprised about how nice they were while talking to me.
