    Default Westboro Baptist Church

I saw a documentary on these guys picketing funerals with "God hates fags" signs and singing popular songs with the words changed to accusations that people are filth and destined for hell.
What do you guys think of them?

They are revolting, but no one has ever challenged them. In fact, the state protects them! So by consensus, the Westboro Baptist Church has more validity than Christian groups who are actually salt & light!

Oh don't worry plenty of people have challanged them, even in court, but we are in a country with free speech, even idiots can speak their minds.

Christian groups have the same rights.

    Not really.

Christian groups are silenced, but these folks are protected. . When crosses or other Christian symbols are placed in public places, they are torn down. A portrait of Jesus cannot be placed in a school without uproar and outrage. It's the worst thing ever! And the Ground Zero Cross in NYC that wasn't even built or planned? More uproar.

Westboro has clearly stepped over that line of "free speech" in a way that no one else could get away with. What makes them so special?

They are restricted by where they can protest, but they aren't physically harming anyone, though it depends on how you view harassment, theres nothing special about them, just like theres nothing special about the KKK or the Communist Party of America, they all have unpopular view points and are allowed to speak.
There are plenty of crosses in public places theres even the tend commandments in front of a courthouse. Jesus's picture wouldn't be allowed in any particular classroom, though perhaps the religious studies classroom, because schools are supposed to be neutral to all religions or lack of religion.

All of these biblical references are only removed when they're provided by the government or being used by the government to make a statement about Christianity or the bible.

"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances."

The reason private schools aren't allowed to have pictures of Jesus on the walls is because they're supposed to be secular.

That's just not true. Everyone has a right to protest like WBC.

You're comparing government's action (using religious symbols) and citizen's actions.

Those are different kinds of infractions, we all have the same rights to free speech, other Christian groups could do the same things that the Westboro church do without being silenced, and if the Westboro tried to put crosses or portraits of Jesus in publically funded venues that wouldn't be allowed. Any church can do the things Westboro does, and Westboro would be stopped from doing the things you're mentioning other churches are stopped from doing
There's no favouritism to Westboro, all the political parties hate them too

Yes, thanks for correcting me! Its veerrry different when it comes to private schools, theres private catholic, protestant, islamic, and jewish schools in the U.S and they have much more power over whether or not they show images of religious figures.

Um, you mean for correcting me? : P

But yeah, you're right. Private schools are allowed to teach whatever religion they want, which is something I support since they don't get government aid.

Many challenge them, they are banned from the U.K and there are always counter protests. They aren't doing to well anyway with keeping members.

People from the westboro baptist group stood out front of my church with signs saying "God hates you" and things like that...needless to say I am not a fan! They clearly are not real followers of Christ.

They should have been charged with harassment, causing a disturbance, and ARRESTED. Westboro hasn't been challenged hard enough, if you ask me. Their activities have been escalating in severity because they know the government will defend them no matter what. They know the people they victimize will not fight back, either. No one seems to have the moral courage to put an end to it once and for all.

In regards to WBC, I think many people complain for the wrong reasons.

So don't see anything morally reprehensible in this group's activities? Evidently not!

You should call Pastor Phelps at and formally offer him your allegiance.
