Just came to think of this when I read the makeup-banning- thread:

What do you think of shows like "What not to wear" (Clothes and make-up makeover) "the biggest looser" (wight loss) and similar shows? (there are probably dozens of them that I haven't heard of)

I personally think they are an accepted form of public bullying. Especially "What not to wear" since you don't sign yourself up. (I guess someone who knows them do, which is kinda rude in my opinion) but even worse:
Total strangers (the hosts) show up in their own home and tell them they look bad the way the dress!!!!!!!

How did this ever become entertainment?

I agree with you, and i never thought of it that way. Especially this what not to wear thing. Who cares what is and what is not in style. It has no significant value to anything.

I care what's in style because I'm a fashion apparel artist in the fashion industry so I have to disagree that style isn't a significant value. The way you feel inside can reflect how you feel on the outside. In my life and my sisters, we both felt ugly growing up. We started to be more self confident when we discovered fashion and dressed accordly. No one can tell us we aren't beautiful and we enjoy being stylish .My sister and I lost weight because we wanted to look good so it was also an influence on our health.
To tell me that me designing clothes isn't worth anything or doesn't matter is biased. I frequently get that look when people ask me my major in college and when I say "fashion" they think I'm stupid or something. What they dont know is that I'm a successful woman who owns her own business and makes an income that can support myself- which is a lot seeing that I'm 23 years old. I design because I actually have a job that I love and believe in- and unlike others I enjoy going to work.

I realize that isn't what you're saying Leilaii, :) I just needed to vent.

I personally love those shows. I think its on a matter of opinion. Every show I've seen isn't just someone not in style its people who are not confident, don't care and look like crap. There was one show where this lady never combed her hair. I think if it weren't for them she still wouldn't. It helps people gain self confidence and what looks good on them. They do have to consent to it. If they don't want to, they can say no go away. So the shows they show on TV the people consented to them changing their wardrobe. (Just my opinion)

lol im glad you got the venting out! I totally see where your coming from as well, i meant that from my perspective like.. I dont care about whats in style. i was also only referring to that one show because people are being picked on in it. And i meant like well what if that person likes the way they dress, and there being embarassed on television having someone come in there and tell them they look bad. I meant no disrespect to you or what you do.

I'm not saying I'm against people dressing nicely, but I'm against people telling others they dress ugly :p (as those shows frequently do). And as for telling them to go away: It's kinda like telling bullies to go away, I don't think everyone has the courage.

I know people judge others by their looks (i.e Job interwievs) I just don't understand why. - If I applly for a cleaning job or something outdoorsy, am I still supposed to show up in a white dressshirt and high heels??

and just to bring an extreeme axample: I was watching one of those shows once, and they were interviewing a plastic surgeon: se said (I think my quote is quite axurate): Sometimes, when I walk down the street and see someone with a crooked nose or somethig, i wonder if I should give them my card and tell them I can fix it for them". - I almos fell off my bed hearing that!
