Yesterday at church was my first time hearing people speak in tongues. I realised that this is something that I want to be able to do. I was wondering if people could describe their first time speaking in tongues and how they got to that point? Also if you have any tips for someone desiring that ability. Thanks

I am confused...? The only time I've read about speaking in tongues is in the Bible. People actually speak in understandable languages other than the ones they know?

I'm not sure if tongues is something you can learn from other people. It's a gift from the Holy Spirit and He gives them out as He sees fit. I can't do it though and have never heard anybody do it in person, so I could be wrong.

As far as if it is real or can still be done today, that is a personal opinion for everybody. It just sounds like babbling if you don't have somebody to translate it for you, which is a different gift of the Holy Spirit. Paul tells us in 1 Corinthians 14, starting around verse 6, that if we don't have a translator nothing is really being accomplished.

[Edit] Also, I should say that some people consider it talking in a fake babbling spiritual language, while other people consider it being able to speak in languages other than your native one, without any teaching.

Oh, I see. I think I'll just wait for whatever gift I'm given. I'm reading the Little Pilgrim's Progress and there's an uplifting passage:

Ch. 9 the Interpreter speaks on the two boys said:
You must remember that everything I show you is meant to teach you something and you may learn from this that it is not wise to wish too eagerly for pleasant things until the King sends them. He knows exactly what is good for each of us and He will always give us what will make us really happy. If we behave like Passion and try to be happy in our own way, we are sure to be disappointed.

I was surprized when I was about 12 yrs of age that I could pray in tongues. A christian neighbor that I was babysitting for told me after I had heard her child praying this way that the gift of tongues is still with us. I had been taught that it was only for the apostles. She told me there were three types. One for all to hear in their own language, one for interpitation, and one for personal prayer. I was not sure about it all but that night when praying I tried. I was amazed that I could pry in tongues. I know it is a gift from the Holy Spirit so that I could pray from my heart. I was also amazed at how beautifull the language is. I have heard a group pray in tongues with an interpiter and it was the most beautiful song like prayer I had ever heard. It is one of the many gifts of the Holy Spirit so dont worry about it if you do not know it yet. All is by God Our Fathers will .

No, you can't learn it from other people as far as I know.

Actually to me it sounds more like another langauge I just don't know.

Tongues is another name for language and if you look in Acts it shows how it was used so the people who were in a different language could hear the Gospel. It says in 1 Corinthians 14 that tongues are for a sign to the unbeliever. I heard a minister say that if a pastor tells you the only way you can receive the Holy Spirit is to speak in tongues, then he said to leave it because that would be false doctrine. The Holy Spirit can speak to you without speaking in tongues. I'm not saying it's wrong, but if we stray away form the guidelines given in 1 Corinthians 14, we can give room for the devil to attack.

If you want the gift of tongues or any gift such as the gift of prophecy, ask for it in prayer.

I first spoke in tongues back three years ago at camp. It is a pentecostal camp, so this isn't unsual there, every year they have one night that the message is based on the babtism of the holy spirit. On that night the speaker had everyone who had already been babtised in the holy spirit (prayed in tongues before) join hands and make a massive circle around the altar and the people who hadn't been babtised in the holy spirit. They were all praying in other tongues and than youth leader and pastors came and prayed with us, and it just all of a sudden came to me. I just opened my mouth and it was like I said what?! and every time i went to speak words came out that I didn't understand. It was quite the experiance.

I have a friend who was in a totally different scenario, and he was just meditating on the night of Pentecost, and he was just asking God like if you still use this fill me up, show me this. And he went to speak and the same thing happened.

Take a read in Acts chapter 2 on the night of Pentecost. Just meditate on that and pray. God bless.

yeah I was aware, you know that feeling you get when you're going to cry hard, that welling up deep down in your soul feeling? It was like that except I wasn't sad.
I understood what it was because my mom speaks in tounges so i wasn't scared or anything. I didn't understand what I said though. I believe you dont have to- my mom says that speaking in tounges is like praying to God for things that needed to be prayed for.

It was an entirely different language given by the holy spirit. Or there would be no need for it today.

Why do you want to do this? You sound like you don't have a reason.

"Follow the way of love and eagerly desire spiritual gifts..." (1 Cor. 14:1) Is one not allowed to merely want the Spirit's gifts alive in him or her? I suggest everyone read 1 Corinthians chapter 14, at least up to verse 25. It answers many of the questions that people have asked here.

I would say to Missy, yes, if you are feeling compelled to minister to groups of unbelievers, whose language you curently do not speak, then earnestly desire the gift of tongues.
