I like drums and I like various styles. So why not post and talk about some? I find when we all share we all learn something new. Share any technical knowledge you have here. Whatever you want to about drums. I'll kick it off with something I really like. Jazz drumming. My favorite style would be hard bop and bee bop. this is what I'm talking about right here.

Well, let's see..I use Sonor Drums, Zildjian Cymbals, DW Pedals,Pro Mark 727 Nylon Tip Sticks,Remo Heads...nothin' too fancy. I do like the sound of Wuhan China Boy Cymbals. I like to stick with the Zildjian A Cymbals & a few K's I like to use a nice big 20" Heavy Ride or a Thrash Ride, 14",16" Crashes,13" Hi-Hat & 15" K Dark Crash.
Favorite Drummers:
Mark Zonder (Warlord/Fate's Warning)
Ted Kirkpatrick (Tourniquet)
Kirk Arrington (Metal Church)
Gene Hoglan (Strapping Young Lad/Dark Angel/Testament)
Paul Bostaph (Forbidden/Exodus)
Billy Cobham
Art Blakey
Buddy Rich
Max Roach
Stewart Copeland (The Police)
I'll post some cool videos at some point as well of a few of these dudes in action.
I started playing drums around age 15-ish
I wanted originally to be a guitar player, like my idol Akira Takasaki of Loudness. When I realized I had pretty much zero chance at that,I heard an album called Deliver Us by a nearly unknown band at the time called Warlord. I heard this dude named "Thunder Child" play drums & it was like something in me went off..I was obsessed. BTW,I later found out his real name was Mark Zonder on their second album. I'd never heard someone infuse Jazz drumming riffs into Heavy Metal it was awesome! I am self taught, which I suppose is why I never got phenomenal...lol then again, yer' always your own worse critic & there's always someone better than you.:)

Dude, I'll never forget the first time I heard loudness. That little dude is crazy. Art Blakey is sick! Stewart Copeland awesome. Ted Kirkpatrick I always thought was one of the best Christian thrash drummers. You put some other really great jazz drummers and drummers. I started out on guitar and thought I could do anything. Self taught I realized I could however I didn't want to read music. I learned how young but I let it go. I never could buy music so I developed my ear and that's how I learned songs. I'm glad because it develops your creative side. So, I realized that I loved the drums as well and decided to pick them up. This started out of a frustration for the wonderful beats I heard in my head that I couldn't tell anyone. I got the idea of how playing a set worked from watching drummers I jammed with. I started to sit down in a chair, on the side of the bed...wherever and break down beats making my feet and hands to exactly what they should in a beat. I would find something high pitched to represent hi hats or a ride and something tacky to represent a snare and just work it out. After I got some basics down and tried them out on a few peoples drums sets and realized I could do it, I bought a set. Cheap pearl set but it was awesome. With that first set I immediately bought a dw 3000 double pedal. I didn't realize until later that I should have learned to switch from playing the high hats and ride between my left hand and right. I crossed over as many drummers do. I had no formal training either but I dig what I do and that's why you do it. The stuff I play on now is not super technical I have a 5 piece tama sk5 with a dw 7000 series double pedal. I keep it simple with a 16 inch 18 inch crash ride and 20 inch ride. I just use the Sabian aax cymbals. I've never purchased anything better really. My style is simple so I don't need anything more. Ya'll know what I like already by now. I don't currently have a china but I want one! Throw a china in on the snare in a blast beat and AWWWWWWW! It's beautiful. Keep this stuff coming I love to hear about it.

From the not so technical side of drumming. Rob Rampy (original drummer for D.R.I.) Mick Harris (Napalm Death) I am fascinated with grindcore drumming. I find two examples best and I will place one video here and one in the next post. One is a person who covers various bands and shows a good example and the other is from Alan Balamut of Anesthestized. Here is Patrick falt doing a napalm d cover. Alan Balamut. This is the best example I could find of what I call a one handed snare roll. I've seen it done by various drummers. The first time I ever saw it done was by some drummer from a band unknown who was touring that we played with. I don't remember their name but it was awesome. I don't know the technical term either for what he's doing. It's just really really fast...on the snare drum with one hand. lol. Origin of blast. Basically a faster variation of a hardcore punk beat used by bands like D.R.I. Mick Harris just kicked it up a notch.

On the Johnny Rabb. That is really cool. I honestly never saw this until I saw that underground band from Texas use it in grindcore.
