So I was discussing the Bible with a girl and she asked if I had spoken in tongues. I replied honestly saying, "No." Then she told me that if I do not speak in tongues, I will go to Hell. So I am posting this to find out if speaking in tongues is the only way to get to Heaven.

Thanks for reading,
Brandon

No, the girl is wrong. You don't need to be able to speak in tongues to live eternally with Christ in the New Heaven and the New Earth. Speaking in tongues is just one of the many gifts of the Holy Spirit.

all scripture says to believe/trust/follow Christ for salvation. Not one of them requires speaking in tongues.

I believe in speaking in tongues, but in no way do I consider it essential to salvation, nor does the Bible.

If that is the case.....this would be one of those cases where the doctrines of men are attempting to usurp the word of God....she is wrong and don't sweat mi amigo...

No, this is due to confusion between perspectives on when the Holy Spirit is received, and a sign of receiving a post conversion baptism/filling/enpowering of the Holy Spirit.

Those who make this error ask a couple questions.

First they ask...When do you receive the Holy Spirit?

The answer is when you believe.
Ephesians 1
13 In Him you also trusted, after you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation; in whom also, having believed, you were sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise, 14 who[b] is the guarantee of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, to the praise of His glory.
The other question they ask is...Well is there a sign one has received the Holy Spirit?
Then they flip to the book of Acts which shows tongues as a sign of receiving a filling of the Holy Spirit in a few places.

Acts 2
4 And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.
Acts 19
5 When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. 6 And when Paul had laid hands on them, the Holy Spirit came upon them, and they spoke with tongues and prophesied.
They then put the two things together.
They say that if THE sign of receiving the Holy Spirit is speaking in tongues, and if you receive the Holy Spirit when you believe, then surely speaking in tongues is a sign you're a believer, considering it's a sign of receiving the Holy Spirit and that comes once you believe.

We need to draw a distinction between what happens in Ephesians 1:13-14, and what we see happening in Acts.

Acts shows us post conversion/salvation fillings/empowerings of the Holy Spirit.

Ephesians shows us what actually happens at conversion.

Even though we have the Holy Spirit at conversion, we must seek to continually be filled with him afterwards.

Ephesians 5
18 And do not be drunk with wine, in which is dissipation; but be filled with the Spirit

I believe with Tintin here that speaking is tongues is only one of the gifts given by the Holy Spirit. If you read what the Apostle Paul says he sums it up. I wish we all spoke in tongues, but better I would want you to prophecy.

What is thought to be "speaking in t. " is not in the Bible. Its something that people, work themselves up into, with emotionalism .

I'm sure there are gifted hunters out there, able to catch a lot of turkeys . But its not that gift spoken in Acts 2.

People will try to convince you it is, but they are only confused by the people around them. No one is around to inform them , what they are witnessing and seeing others and even themselves do, is Not written.

Confusion isn't going to get you eternal life.

As a believer in the baptism of the Holy Spirit with the evidence of speaking in tongues as the Spirit gives the utterance. The only requirement to be saved is to believe in your heart and confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus Christ. The same shall be saved.

Based on Ephesians 4:1-6, I would have nothing to do with her if you show her, the things everyone posted, and she still gets on you about it. 1 Cor 12:12-13 expressly says that we were all baptized with the Holy Spirit - born again - at our conversion

1Co 12:27 Now ye are the body of Christ, and members in particular.
1Co 12:28 And God hath set some in the church, first apostles, secondarily prophets, thirdly teachers, after that miracles, then gifts of healings, helps, governments, diversities of tongues.
1Co 12:29 Are all apostles? are all prophets? are all teachers? are all workers of miracles?
1Co 12:30 Have all the gifts of healing? do all speak with tongues? do all interpret?
1Co 12:31 But covet earnestly the best gifts: and yet shew I unto you a more excellent way.

1Co 13:1 Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, and have not charity, I am become as sounding brass, or a tinkling cymbal.
1Co 13:2 And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries, and all knowledge; and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, and have not charity, I am nothing.

Thanks for the laugh. Did Jesus say to speak a bunch of unintelligible sounds? Of course not, he told people how to pray.

There is NO such thing as speaking in tongues. It is a made up thing that SOME people use to have you believe that they are "holier than you".

yes, these are rhetorical questions by Paul, meaning the answer is 'no' to each one, and if not all speak in tongues etc., then tongues are not necessary for salvation.

Over the past few months, I have been wondering about what "speaking in tongue" really is (after seeing a lot of discussions about it here in Bible forum but didn't have much time to go through all the comments). Is it like someone saying (at the end of mass prayers in the church/family worship, etc, etc) the Holy spirit says, "blah, blah, blah...." and utters some sort of prophetic word that they supposed they have been shown in the vision or stuffs like that? Would really appreciate if someone could please elucidate it for me. Thank you in advance.

(Sorry for deviating from the OP but was curious to know what "speaking in tongue" really is. I did not feel the need to start a separate thread for it just for that so asking it here)
