All of which are claims in the bible.

Why does your book hold more water than any other book? Why should your book be believed over any other book?
Because it speaks the truth about mankind and their dependant need for God. Sometimes the bible hits me because what it is saying is true. I am not a good person, I am not worthy of anything. It reveals my true self before a holy God.

ME & VOID = MANKIND

Need for God = 0

Are we not mankind? Or are we as someone once compared me to, the antichrist :p
When you do not see a need for God, this is called being totally depraved, a state of sin that can't and will not desire to seek after God.

But, if you are born again before you are a Christian as Ephesians 2:5 says, then God has opened your eyes to see your nature and your need for God. If you can't see that, then you have not yet been born again.

There is one person you should fear, that's God. Because it is not a pleasant thing to fall into the judgement of an angry God. For us who believe, His judgement against us was placed on Christ. But the unbeliever will get the full just and righteous judgement due to them...

This is not a joke, neither is it funny to play around with it.

So because I can't believe in magic trees, flaming swords guarding paradise, talking animals and dead people coming back to life etc... Then I DESERVE eternal torture?

I do not make this claim lightly. I have studied the bible cover to cover. OT & NT. Asked questions. Listened to many answers from many viewpoints. I have been the blind man with the elephant and decided a long time ago that I didn't need a world with any theist God. Nor in my mind does anyone else. But that is merely my opinion.

You must be born again to see the kingdom of God (John 3:3).

If you really studied the bible and yet God has not quickened you to come alive and understand it and accept it. That's even scarier. A man who has read the bible with no conviction. The end judgement is even more severe because you had read the truth and yet reject it. Pray that God opens your eyes!

I pray that God open your eyes, you don't understand how terrible that is. If you truly want to know God, pray to Him, do not turn your back on Him.

I submit they are simply liars - to themselves and to those they tell that to. We have all heard the saying "there are no atheists in foxholes", well I believe that is true. I believe when facing death every man knows he is facing a meeting with his maker. People simply want to be the man in charge. They don't want to answer to anyone, or anything else. They want to believe they are the ultimate authority in their life, that they run the show. I had a thought a couple of days ago - how long would it take an atheist in a space ship, after being jettisoned out the door like so much flotsam, to call on God? That thought alone makes one feel quite insignificant.
I was, at one time ,what I thought was an atheist. I had no idea what the bible contained and had no idea why on earth anyone would wish to find out. I thought the bible was for someone else, someone weak, the feeble minded, those that needed a crutch, and so forth. It was not until I challenged the bible for truth, and what I ended up challenging was my own ability to prove it a lie. When I learned to challenge the English versions with the Hebrew and Greek, Chaldean, and Aramaic, is when I found that the lies were found in the English, and that the translators had either mistakenly, or purposefully changed the original words and thoughts around to suit their own concepts. Once I began learning the truth, I was no longer an atheist, but I must admit, it was hard giving in, I fought long and hard to prove myself right, and lost. I was never so glad to lose a battle, such as it was.

A. An explosion of nothingness created all things.

B. An infinite God created all things.

I'm sorry but point A sounds a lot more like magic than point B.
B. I want to raise a couple of points. First, my comment about the biblical passage Genesis 1:14, “And God said, ‘Let their be lights in the expanse of the sky....’ ” This doesn’t sound like magic to you? I imagine a robed and gray-beared sky god spreading his arms, and in a deep, resonating voice speaking the words “Let their be lights in the expanse of the sky,” and suddenly the sun and moon appear. Again I ask you, that’s not magic?

I put forward the possibility that the Bronze Age author of the text had no idea what else to say. It’s been suggested that he never named the “lights” because the surrounding peoples worshipped the sun and moon as gods, and he didn’t want to give those heavenly bodies any more mention than was necessary.

I will ask one more time, does this passage not ring with magic? His mere words alone were enough for the sun and moon to appear in the sky. No other creative mechanism is even hinted at, and so often I have heard that indeed, God’s word alone was enough for the creative act to occur. Magic!

A. Now on to “a universe from nothing,” which is actually the title of a book by Lawrence Krauss. Is the universe truly from nothing? Doseofreality asks, “Why do people assume the big bang came from nothing?? Nothing doesn't go Bang.”

I want to take you back to 1916. Einstein predicted that year that large gravitational fields should magnify objects behind them. The proof came ten years later when a distant galaxy was photographed with two smaller galaxies on either side of it. Those two galaxies were identical to one another because they were images of a more distant galaxy hidden behind the galaxy at the centre of the trio. We all understand that a lens magnifies images and the phenomena photographed in 1926 is called gravitational lensing, but how does it work? Einstein predicted that the space around a massive object would be warped. The lens, in this instance, is simply warped space. Think about that for a moment. The only thing magnifying the distant galaxy is empty, warped space. We think of empty space as containing nothing, of being a void, so what is there to warp? It must be space it self. We think of empty space as nothingness but in fact it must be something. As Krauss says in his book, “nothing is something.” In this instance space must behave as a fabric that can be twisted and distorted so as to act as a lens. This is not something we can grasp in our every day experience, but we can show it through observation and experimentation.

Though the Big Bang may appear to come from nothing, in this case nothing likely is again something, that we don’t yet understand. Physics, at least, is working toward an understanding, a greater understanding than is found in the simple words, “And God said, ‘Let there be...’”

Eternal punishment because you did not believe the truth. Unless you believe, you are condemned. This is why we evangelize, to spread the truth and to teach men about the upcoming events of the end. The bible says it will be like the days of Noah, people living life not caring, then the flood will catch them by surprise. Men of the world will mock us the bible says in saying this...

2 Peter 3:3-14 NASB

Know this first of all, that in the last days mockers will come with their mocking, following after their own lusts, and saying, "Where is the promise of His coming? For ever since the fathers fell asleep, all continues just as it was from the beginning of creation."

For when they maintain this, it escapes their notice that by the word of God the heavens existed long ago and the earth was formed out of water and by water, through which the world at that time was destroyed, being flooded with water. But by His word the present heavens and earth are being reserved for fire, kept for the day of judgment and destruction of ungodly men.
But do not let this one fact escape your notice, beloved, that with the Lord one day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years like one day. The Lord is not slow about His promise, as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing for any to perish but for all to come to repentance.

But the day of the Lord will come like a thief, in which the heavens will pass away with a roar and the elements will be destroyed with intense heat, and the earth and its works will be burned up.

Since all these things are to be destroyed in this way, what sort of people ought you to be in holy conduct and godliness, looking for and hastening the coming of the day of God, because of which the heavens will be destroyed by burning, and the elements will melt with intense heat!

But according to His promise we are looking for new heavens and a new earth, in which righteousness dwells. Therefore, beloved, since you look for these things, be diligent to be found by Him in peace, spotless and blameless,

So, If someone like me who finds the claims of the bible to be totally unbelievable was to ask god to make himself known so they could believe in him.... Would god respond? Or just sit back and let them burn after they die?

Hello Ob77, I am curious, when did you become and atheist and when did you again find God? I was raised Christian myself, but became an atheist at age sixteen. Unlike yourself I never lost interest in the Bible. It was, in fact, the Bible that eventually led to my loss of belief.

I've always been a non believer and after reading the bible it actually reinforced my position.

I don't think you understand. Everyone has sinned against God, even me and you. That is worthy of death and condemnation. Our good deeds and righteousness becomes filthy rags before God (Isaiah 64:6). Nothing you can do can earn salvation, you are headed for destruction because of your own sin. God is completely righteous and just to excute judgement on those who sinned against Him. He is not partial to persons, He is completely just.

God loved His sheep so much, that He planned a way of redemption. Sent His Son, so that our full guilt and punishment and sin will be placed on Him, the fullness of God's wrath against us. That's why Christ said, "God God why have You forsaken me." Because Jesus on that cross bore our judgement. God did this to redeem His people who He called before the foundations of the world.

Everyone else who isn't of God will get their full condemnation. It's their fault, their sins will mark them before a holy and wrath filled God.

Are you His sheep? If you are, this sacrifice of Christ was paid for you.

But surely an all knowing god would know that the stories in the bible would be too much for some people to believe.

He's prepared to just let them burn an not attempt to intervene?

Actually no, this is why I keep saying you must be born again (John 3:3). Unless God spiritually opens your eyes and draws you to Christ, you will not be saved. 1 Corinthians 1:18 says that "the word of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God."

If God has called you to be saved, He will irresistibly win you. You will want to come to the truth because before you were blind to the truth.

The bible even says that God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise (1 Corinthians 1:27)

You keep talking about bible stories, I'm talking about the heart of the issue, your relationship and position before holy and righteous God. I'm talking about the gospel, also known as the good news.

God always intervene for those He will save.

Which is the equivalent of saying you have a cure for blindness... but you have to be able to see in order for it to work.

Jesus is the way, but you must spiritually born before you decide to choose the way.

Everyone is first dead in their sins (Ephesians 2:1), because of this no one wants to seek God (Romans 3:11), so God must bring you to life while a dead sinner (Ephesians 2:5) so that you can see the kingdom of God and believe (John 3:3, 16).

The Holy Spirit never fails to bringing to salvation those who He will save whom Christ is calling (John 6:37-40).

Non sequitir as you were not asked.
My conclusion does not follow from my premise because I was not asked the question? That makes no sense. Besides, I made no argument at all. I simply think it would be better to address the origin of the world when this is what the student asked about. The Big Bang explains the origin of the universe.

It’s called the Nebular Hypothesis. What you will find in science is that you don’t necessarily have to be there to work out what happened, but if not being there is a problem then the author of Genesis 1 has the same problem. I am sorry, but I don’t accept the claim that God inspired the writing. The account is very clearly an ancient cosmology. The proof of this is in the pudding.

This was a fellow calling wrath down upon atheists in general, or did he verbally insult you? I must say, I haven't seen many of this sort where I live.
