I cant even understand the guys on the other end of Dells support, so its not like its really support (at least not for me). I never opt to buy their their support, but I asked about rejecting that and its just thrown in under whats included, its not like I can see how each is itemized (by cost).

Which always works to their advanatage it seems
hmm.. sounds odd to me.. you should be able to opt out of it.. but yes they try to get you to buy as many goodies as they can..

Bad deal? Lynx would likely feel that way lol But non geniuses have to pay more for their ignorance in certain things, it takes me like a year to buy a car (Im so bad) lol
No, it's not a bad deal. It's not a great one, either. I think the laptop would treat you better if you got something that had a 7200 RPM hard drive in it, instead of the 5400 RPM drive (400-AAZU).

You have a good processor there, though (the i5). :)

Shoot! It's too bad I'm not local to you. We could totally get a cheapy or a middle tier laptop, then upgrade it.

If you get this laptop, uninstall McAfee. It stinks. Lol.

Okay, I had the guy tell me what I should get (to be cool) I helped him with the laptop size (I desire) and specifically asked for windows 7 and after he gace me the price I said I want to check out hiw reccomendations, can he email me these (so he did).

Overcharged here (to a great extent) here? Anything missing that should be here? Or anything that should be replaced?

Anyone know how to read this?

The price is $200 over what I wanted to spend, and I did ask for McAfee (and the CD if they still give those) which he said they do however, it just looks like a 30 days trial is included (nothing more then that). Cant find my mouse (to add)

Anyone see changes I could make?

(Not for so much for a gamer, computer nerd) but for an average user

Cant believe they still use 5400rpm hard drives these days. What are you using it for? If just generally surfing and emails etc. An i3 CPU would suffice to save you some money.

Siberian_Khatru, we will fly you over to my house hows that? LOL

McAfee is all I have ever used and has always worked fine, but what would you advise for virus and/or security protection then?

Im a couple hundred over what I should spend already (and he felt like he was being more then generous lol)

I believe you told me 7200 RPM (was it?) would be closer to $1000 or something like that.

I'll have to talk to the boss (he will bend that figure for me) he is pretty good, if I opt for this 7200 RPM, what can it do for me?

I have to be able to "justify it"

Well, I come here (on it) I check my emails every other day and use Blueletterbible to study, and I dont do much of anything else, except maybe visit amazon to make a purchase once a month.

I do like to listen to music (my own) and watch youtube sometimes.

Nothing fancy, I dont know what an 13 CPU is

have them put a free anti virus on it for you..tell them you don't want McaFee.. I don't recommend the free version of Avast. It slowed mine down til it just barely worked. I don't know if Macafee does a free version or not. You would save alot more money by getting a refurbished used one at a computer store. They wipe the hard drive of the previous owner's stuff, take off viruses, etc.. If you get one with windows 7, then Microsoft Security Essentials should already be on it. It turns off by default if you put a different AV on it, though..

what exactly are you going to use this for? Tell them you don't want any extras, that you're only going to use it to surf the net, play games or whatever..

a CPU is a Central Processing Unit.. when I'm on youtube for too long, Norton tells me that I'm using too much CPU (power)..

Okay I will ask him just this, so you are saying, dont go with McAfee (at all) and I should expect that this Microsoft securities essentials to already be on it. I definately want to be sure because last night I went to download that (free) on the site given to me and the download wouldnt fully download for me. So if its not on there already I dont want to take the chance of it not downloading on the new one.

Oh I forgot, one more thing, I use Opera as my browser, is there anything that would hinder me doing that, I just love Opera, although I was having difficulty with Youtube on it, I eventually got it worked out but I love this one.

ok here is a few things to ask him:

1.) Is Microsoft Security Essentials already on the computer?
2.) Tell him NOT to put a paid AV on the computer, and ask him which free version AV is best.

I use Opera too and I love it, but it uses soooooooo much CPU on mine.. Browsers won't affect the computer..but download Firefox if you don't already have it, and then download Opera through FF onto your computer. ALWAYS go to the original download site for ANY downloads.. in other words, go to http//www.opera.com to download it, and not "xyz.com'. LOL.. Firefox is supported through Norton so it will check to be sure the download is safe.. I use FF only for getting pictures and doing photo editing.. I use Opera for everything else..

edit: make sure he takes off the windows 8.1 OS support recovery.. If it has windows 7 then theres no need for windows 8 to be on there too..

I tried Microsoft Security Essentials (downloading it) last night and it wouldnt download on my present laptop so I guess I will still with what has always worked for me without any problems (McAfee)
No one here agrees on much lol
Everyone has their personal favorites. But you can pretty much gather from what people say alltogether what to avoid.
I will add my vote to malware bytes anti-malware, free version, for malware; and Microsoft Security Essentials for real time protection, it used to be weak but it's among the best now. It doesnt slow the PC down. I use Malwarebytes for occasional scans. I think nobody mentioned BitDefender antivirus. It's really worth a try too. It doesnt annoy with popups, doesnt slow your PC down, it's really neat and quiet and solid protection. I used it on Ubuntu though but it has overall excellent feedback.

Great advice, thanks sis, with windows 7 on that estimate it looks like it actually includes windows 8.1 (seven lines down from the top) but the windows 8.1 recovery is included for the windows 8.1 included with windows 7, see what I mean?

I'll repost this...

what they are selling me.png

It just appears they are including this in case you want to upgrade, like in the case they find better patches for the latter version maybe?

Either way I will ask him if removing it would save me substantially, or whether its just included (so the price cant budge LOL)

Thanks SoulWeaver, looks like I can order it tonight after I get my husband okay (fingers crossed) lol

well you can't use windows 7 AND windows 8..lol.. you could probably just uninstall the windows 8.1 or ask him to remove it.. keep in mine that if you uninstall Windows 7, you CANNOT reinstall it because it will auto-upgrade to windows 8.1..

confused yet? lol

This laptop is just awful to post with theres pop ups all over it, I can barely see to post on this screen
Wow!!! This is scary. I am not a computer expert and in the last few days I have taken three of our family older computers and cleaned them up. The computer I am on right now gave me all kinds of grief even after running Ccleaner, Malware bytes, windows defender, and adaware without eliminating all of the problems. Finally I tried adwcleaner ( free) and all the problems were solved. Just a thought.

Sounds like a plan to me!

McAfee is loaded onto a lot of computers because they pay companies like Dell to do it. Honestly, I feel that just about all anti-virus programs out there are pretty comparable as far as protection goes. Each one may have its own unique feature or two to tout, is all. McAfee used to have very high praises at one point, but it has sort of fallen on the wayside due to the overwhelming competition. Here are some other anti-virus programs to consider:

  • BitDefender (free or paid)
  • Avast! (free or paid)
  • AVG (free or paid)
  • Kaspersky (trial, then paid subscription only)
  • Norton (trial, then paid subscription only)
  • ESET NOD32 (trial, then paid subscription only)

Malwarebytes is great at detection if you want to have the free version of it on hand. You'll just have to run it manually whenever you want; only the paid version offers real time protection.

And yes: 7200 RPM is right! It's not the be all, end all, but you will see a noticeable difference in the computer's performance between, say, a 500GB, 5400 RPM drive, and a 500GB, 7200 RPM drive. As you load more software onto the computer, that 5400 RPM drive will really begin to show its limitations. The 7200 RPM drives don't cost much more, either (about $25 - $50, depending on Dell's markup). It's the solid state drives that are expensive.

Oh that stinks, but maybe thats why they include 8.1?

Like an extra just in case anything happens to 7 maybe?

Thats how I was thinking about it.

I do prefer how they used to do things with CD's rather then site downloads I sorta hate going to all these sites and downloading stuff on my puters, I feel like a holier then thou person with that attitude (not meaning to) like they will make my computer unclean or something LOL
